New book by author Dan O’Brien

You’re never too old to have one more adventure
Brought to life by Steve Ferchaud’s vibrant drawings, this story for all ages by Dan O’Brien lets us know that it is never too late to have one more adventure.
    An Excerpt:
Robert Pendleton opened one eye as the light of a passing car flashed over the window, shattering the darkness into prisms. He rolled onto his back on the beat-up couch and yawned as he reached his hands up and rubbed his eyes unceremoniously.
He looked out over the darkness at the digital clock. The red digits spelled out a quarter ‘til midnight––nearly fourteen hours of sleep. He smiled and grabbed one of the cushions of the couch, burying his head in it. Just enough sleep, he reminded himself. Robert felt that anything less than twelve hours of sleep was very nearly too little.
He grasped blindly for the TV remote.
Groaning as he lifted his head, he looked at the empty table––his eyes drawn by another flash of a passing car. He couldn’t see clearly, but he knew that the remote had been there before he had fallen asleep nearly half a day ago.
“Could have sworn….” he mumbled as he pushed himself up and brushed his hand around the top of the table, finding nothing. “Where did….”
Another groan escaped his lips as he lifted his body to a sitting position and threw aside the cluster of pillows that he had gathered around himself. He reached out for the lamp, but instead knocked it to the floor with a resounding thud.
Robert muttered as he stood up from the couch, and then sank to his knees to search around in the darkness for the fallen lamp. Reaching around on the shadowed floor, shards of the broken lamp scattered like pieces of light.
He turned his head, peering beneath the large space underneath the couch and saw the reflection of the buttons on the remote. The off-gray piece of machinery was underneath the couch––only darkness lingered beyond it. He reached out as he spoke again.
“How did it get all the way down there?”
Robert flexed his hand and strained as he twisted his back to reach farther; yet, the remote remained just out of reach. He pulled his arm away with a huff and craned his neck to the side, staring underneath into the darkness below the couch.
His eyes widened as he saw the impossible: there was something beyond the remote. He shook his head and closed his eyes, whispering to himself that he didn’t see what he thought he had.
“I saw a little man,” he whispered to himself as he opened his eyes once more and nearly gasped as he did so.
The figure was closer now and he could make out the outline clearly. A tiny man rested just beyond the remote.
    “What in the name of…?”
“Not here in the name of nobody, laddie. I be a friend though,” crooned the miniscule figure as he interrupted Robert and stepped forward, placing a hand on the darkened and slick surface of the remote.
A tam-o’-shanter crested his bright red hair, the shaggy mane blending perfectly into his equally crimson, neatly trimmed, beard.
A billow of whitish smoke drifted from the long-stemmed pipe that he held clenched between his lips.
Robert fell back and knocked aside the adjacent table. Rubbing his eyes, he spoke a single word: “Leprechaun.”

The Rockin’ Chair by Steven Manchester #BookReview & Author Interview

I have been thrilled to review Steven Manchester’s last 2 novels – Goodnight Brian and Twelve Months. His stories are unlike anything else I’ve read.  So when Steven asked if I would review his newest novel – The Rockin’ Chair – I couldn’t pass it up. This time though, I asked if he wouldn’t mind doing a little interview with me. Enjoy!  The Rockin’ Chair was released today 6/18/2013

    Interview with author Steven Manchester

When did you first know you wanted to write a book?
I’d just returned home from Operation Desert Storm, and was working as a prison investigator in Massachusetts. Needless to say, there was great negativity in my life at that time. I decided to return to college to finish my degree in Criminal Justice. During one of the classes, the professor—Barry McKee—talked about police work but nothing else. I finally raised my hand and asked, “The criminal justice system is vast. What about the courts, probation, parole – corrections?” Barry smiled and told me to see him after class. I thought I’d finally done it! In his office, he explained, “There’s no written material out there on corrections or prisons, except from the slanted perspective of inmates.” He smiled again and dropped the bomb. “If you’re so smart,” he said, “why don’t you write it?” Nine months later, I dropped the first draft of 6-5; A Different Shade of Blue on Barry’s desk. From then on, I was hooked. I was a writer.
Who has been your biggest support through the writing process?
From an inspiration perspective: My family; wife and children. Everything I do is done with my children in mind, trying to teach them by the example I provide with my own life. And I could never thank my wife enough for the support she has given me through the years.
From a writing perspective: Lou Aronica—my publisher, mentor and friend. He has taught me more about writing in a year than I was able to learn during the decade that preceded it.
A question we must all ask, who are your favorite authors, and have their works shaped your writing?
    Stephen King- for his prolific works, and the amazing work ethic that has produced them all;
Mitch Albom and Nicholas Sparks- for the emotional works that they’ve created. I’ve been inspired by both.
I also love many of the classic American novelists that came before—especially Harper Lee. For me, To Kill a Mockingbird  is literary perfection.
What piece of advice would you give an aspiring write?
I work with a lot of aspiring writers. With an industry rejection rate of 96%+, this business can prove very harsh. I tell new writers:
    Be true to yourself, always.
    Write constantly.
    Keep the faith!!!
And NEVER, EVER, EVER quit. Most people in this industry would agree that more than talent or skill or even luck, perseverance is the one trait that will always get the job done.
Knock on every door you can, and keep knocking. I promise that eventually someone will open and the warmth you feel on your face will more than validate every hour spent alone in the darkness.
When it comes to your books, you have chosen some strong emotional situations that people deal with in real life – where did the ideas for your books come from? Are there personal connections you have with each circumstance?
I believe that good writing makes people think, while great writing makes people feel. I’m always aiming for the heart. There are personal connections to everything that I write—though most of it is fiction. For me, once I’ve decided on a theme that I feel passionate about, I write the book with my children in mind—to pass along my thoughts and beliefs.
All of your books focus around family and the love and support we should find within them – would you tell us a little about your family?
My wife Paula and I have four children (two boys and two girls) and, although we live very hectic lives, we try to share everything. I’m also blessed with parents and siblings that have been very loving and supportive.
Finally, I want to know, do you have any books in the works? Can you spoil us with a little preview?
A la Nicholas Sparks, Pressed Pennies is a wondrous tale of connecting love stories, proving that the world really is a small place and, whether we believe it or not, we’re all connected. Love can happen at any time in life – young or old – and the trick is to cherish it by living each of its moments to the fullest. Amid the heart-warming romances and deceitful twists and turns, Pressed Pennies tackles the trying issues associated with living in a non-traditional family. In an era of divorce and single-parenthood, it is a story about raising children and peacefully co-existing; making it work with mutual respect and consideration. The book’s underlying theme is discovered in the evolution of the 80’s child. Though life begins as wholesome and innocent, technology eventually takes over. Day care, fast food and a list of coveted luxuries replace long talks in porch swings, tree forts and family suppers. The price for comfort proves very expensive, though, as the American family is traded in for the American dream.
Expected release date of February 2014.

    The Rockin' Chair

    The Rockin’ Chair
    by Steven Manchester

About the Book: Memories are the ultimate contradiction. They can warm us on our coldest days – or they can freeze a loved one out of our lives forever. The McCarthy family has a trove of warm memories. Of innocent first kisses. Of sumptuous family meals. Of wondrous lessons learned at the foot of a rocking chair. But they also have had their share of icy ones. Of words that can never be unsaid. Of choices that can never be unmade. Of actions that can never be undone.

Following the death of his beloved wife, John McCarthy – Grandpa John – calls his family back home. It is time for them to face the memories they have made, both warm and cold. Only then can they move beyond them and into the future.

My Thoughts: The thing about Steven’s books is no one is perfect, which makes them that much more relatable. We all have trials, and mistakes we make, but it’s how we deal with them, that make us who we are. The Rockin’ Chair takes a close look at a family who has let pride and anger stand in their way of family love. A key lesson I gleaned from this book is the need for open communication. Sharing our feelings, even if it might feel awkward at first, will benefit families in the long run. I don’t want to ruin the book for you, so all I can say is – go read this! Read this book, and then use it to better your family relationships. Steven you’ve aimed for the heart and hit your mark once again. Thank you for a heartfelt story of family, love, and forgiveness.

  • Interview with Author Jason D Morrow: The Marenon Chronicles  {2012 Holiday Gift Guide}

    Interview with Author Jason D Morrow: The Marenon Chronicles {2012 Holiday Gift Guide}

The Marenon Chronicles by Jason D Morrow, have got to be the best self published books I’ve ever read!  I have had the immense pleasure this past year to read and review each book in the trilogy as they’ve come out. You can read those reviews at the following links

When I started thinking of Christmas and a good gift for those teens I know, I didn’t have to think very hard. The Marenon Chronicles are a perfect fantasy novel, one I would easily compare to Lord of the Rings in storyline, to give to a book loving teen.  I asked Jason if he wouldn’t mind answering some questions so we could get to know him a little better – he of course was willing. With that, here is Jason!

    What is your favorite book?
My favorite book is the Hobbit, so you can imagine my excitement about the new movie coming out this month.
    Who is your favorite author?
Ted Dekker is one of the best writers out there today. His action keeps the story flowing and his plot always keeps you guessing. I try to pick up one of his books any chance I get.
If your books were made into a movie, who would you cast?
That’s a good question. Often times when I write, I sort of have blank faces to the characters, and when I re-read them in editing, my mind fills in the gaps. For the character of Kaden Osric, there is no doubt in my mind that I would cast Liam Neeson if I had the choice. The characters Dink and Emma were written with myself and my wife in mind. I figured that if it ever did become a movie some day, we could try to contract ourselves in for those minor roles.
What are your favorite holiday traditions?
At Christmas time, my mom makes these delicious sausage balls. We can all be gathered together at spending time with each other, but it’s just not the holidays unless those sausage balls are fresh out of the oven.

Read my Review of Book 1 and Book 2

I wanted to get to know Lisa and her family a little bit better, so I asked if they wouldn’t mind answering a few questions. Read on, because this is one fun family!

    What is your favorite Book?
J.K Rowling is up there right now, as she probably is with a lot of people. Who didn’t love the Harry Potter series? The suspense leading into the 7th book was pretty intense. Chad has been reading the swashbuckler of Rafael Sabatini which are filled with adventure, “Scaramouche” and “Captain Blood” are a lot of fun. We both have enjoyed reading Ian Fleming recently, searching for inspiration for the Chase Danger books. Lloyd Alexander (The Black Cauldron) was a huge favorite as a kid, all his books are whimsical, magical and delightful. We all lean toward adventure and mystery

If you’re book were turned into a movie, who would you cast?
Since we’re dreaming, can we have anyone, dead or alive? Vincent Price would make a great Igor Fimple, and Marlon Brando could play anything he wanted. We’d need Tom Cruise or Johnny Depp, of course! Is Dakota Fanning too old to play Princess Ali Bali? Does she have a younger sibling in the right age range?  The kids parts would have to be fresh faces. If Antonio Banderas isn’t available to play Zalezgon, we’d settle for Desi Arnaz or even Joe Pesci would be brilliant. Robert Deniro would be a great Captain Looney, but he’d need a wig.

What are your favorite Holiday Tradition?
We love to create special holiday meals. Heart shaped pizzas on Valentine’s, green ravioli’s on St. Patrick’s, etc.

Our Favorite, though, is what we call the “Christmas Eve Suite”. This meal includes wrapped “presents” (grilled veggies wrapped in fillo crust), a “wreath” made of spaghetti squash and sliced persimmons, “yule logs”, (manicotti filled with ricotta cheese, spinach and sliced grilled chicken) and topped with cherries, cranberries and assorted gum drop candies. If it sounds weird to you, well, we’d probably agree… but it’s wonderful in person. And it’s only once a year.
Chase has already begun asking for it, but it’s no mystery that he’s only thinking of the gum drops

Here in Los Angeles with no snow, we have outdoor malls where they shower fake “snow” from the rooftops. It’s become a recent tradition to visit the snow for an evening and do our shopping all at once.

to get the most recent updates on Book 3!

The Chase Danger Super Spy books would make a great gift for any young child this holiday season. With the Read Along Theater, your kids can take reading to another level! Although I think boys will really get into this new comic style series, my girls enjoy them just as much.
