Patriotic Rag Wreath

Be proud to be an American, and hang a Patriotic Rag Wreath on your door this summer. So easy, even small hands can get involved making it.

I saw this awesome Rag Wreath over at Sassy Sanctuary, and just had to make one. She actually makes a lot of stuff that I want to someday make, but for now we’ll start with the wreath. I had all the materials on hand, and knew I could pop it out easy peasy! The only thing I needed to buy was the wire frame which Amazon sells, or you can check out your local craft stores.

Start by cutting the fabric in strips measuring 1″ by 6″. Any smaller and they won’t fluff out as nicely. too long and they’ll look droopy.

Using a simple knot, tie the strips around the wreath. Depending on the fabric you chose, you can make it a pattern to look more Flag like with the blue and stars on one side and striped red and white around, or scatter the colors around for a more mixed look like I have.

Of course, you have to have a little fun while crafting, right? It really makes the perfect picture frame with Nana.

Finally, add a longer strip of fabric or some coordinating ribbon to the back of your frame. Hang it on your door for all visitors and passersby to enjoy! You now have a Patriotic Rag Wreath that will never go out of style.

Leave it up all year, or pull it out whenever you’re feeling especially patriotic. Enjoy your 4th of July!

St Patricks Day Coffee Filter Wreath

I had so much fun putting this St Patrick’s Day Coffee Filter Wreath together while sitting on the floor with the kids. I had made a pink one in February with some friends that I just loved. While we sat there poking holes in cardboard, we surmised how cute a St Patty’s day one would be. This post contains affiliate links and I will be compensated if you click on and make a purchase.

Coffee Filter Wreath

This is such an easy craft that anyone can do it. You need a total of 4 items, that you most likely have on hand.
– green tempera paint
– Round cardboard – I used the cardboard from frozen pizza.
– coffee filters
– skewer

You start by dyeing your coffee filters in the tempera paint. I poured a few tablespoons of the tempera paint in a glass bowl, then added some water. The water helps the coffee filters soak it up better. Dip the edges of the filters in the paint, and then flip over to dry. I let mine dry overnight and well into the morning the next day.

Once the coffee filters are dry, it’s time to do some poking! Using the skewer, poke holes through your cardboard. They don’t need to be very close, about a 1/2″ to 1″ apart. and then just kind of scattered around the cardboard. Most likely you’ll skip filling some of the holes even.

Now that you have the holes made, you can start filling them with the dyed coffee filters. To do this, gently wrap the filters around the skewer again, and push it through the hole. Grab the skewer on the back side to help glide the filter through. This was the most time-consuming part, but it was something I could do while the kids played next to me. Princess R colored me some pictures, while little Prince built towers with the LEGO’s. It was a kodak moment I tell you!

To finish off the look, and to avoid it being just a green blob, I added some festive “Happy St Patrick’s Day” ribbon – that I bought eons ago, knowing one day I would use – and some little shamrocks. Confession, I did take apart the kids Shamrock necklace so I could add them to the wreath. They only curiously asked what I was doing though, so I believe we’re safe.

Halloween Bash Kick Off

I am so excited to celebrate Halloween with you all this week! We gathered together the creative minds of some very talented blogging friends to bring you over 110 fabulous Halloween ideas! From costumes to parties, crafts and home decor, recipes and free printables, we have so many fun ideas to share! I guarantee you’ll find a project (or 10!) that you would love to incorporate into your Halloween festivities.

Crafting with Crafters Crate

I have to admit something to you all.

I’m not a big crafter. I WANT to be one. I love creating things. I just don’t do it very often, I walk through a craft store and get overwhelmed, and the things most crafters have on hand constantly you’d be lucky to find in my house.

I sometimes feel bad for my kids, because I know they want to craft more. I believe it would help them be more creative individuals as well. Crafting can help them learn to solve problems; think outside the box.

These are all things that don’t necessarily come easy to me. I do try though.

That’s why when I heard about Crafters Crate, I was pretty excited. Yes I know, you see crate and you start thinking – here goes, another monthly subscription box. YEP! That is just what this is, but for crafters, and I would say more specifically for wannabe mom crafters like myself. Obviously Princess R was pretty excited as well – it meant real crafting time!

Crafters Crate comes with everything you need to make a number of different crafts. We got a crate of some fun summer crafts, and we still haven’t finished them up yet (ok we did move, we’re getting to them!). The girls were fighting over the fashion sandals, so I had to make a mom decision, and then let the other girls pick their next favorite to create. Mostly though, we worked together on all of them.

Right in the middle of wrapping Princess V’s sandals with twine, some friends stopped by to see if we could play. So together they wrapped and wrapped and wrapped those sandals, while Princess C and her friend put together the flower necklace.

So what did we finally think of the Crafters Crate? The kids loved having crafts that they could do virtually mom free, and although I loved I didn’t have to put any of it together for them, I was also sold on the sanity saver treat included. Shh, I may have snuck this out of the crate before any of the kids ever knew it was there!

I was just looking over at the site again, and am kind of bummed I didn’t get in on Septembers crate. They had a Swashbuckling theme going on, complete with a spyglass, treasure box, pirate booty, and even a book!

A House for Hermit Crab: Seashell Centerpiece

Bring books to life when pairing them with a craft. A House for Hermit Crab is one of our favorite activities, and can be done over and over again.

When I heard The Educators Spin On It was hosting a Summer Love Books Exchange, I could not resist. Come on, people, you know me! When it comes to books I have a hard time resisting anything. I joined in with the Picture Book Group and we were paired with Learning To Love Them.

Learning to Love Them, sent us one of our favorite books by a favorite author – A House for Hermit Crab By Eric Carle, along with a bag full of seashells, some ribbon, and craft sticks.

Doesn’t this look like so much fun?! I tell you what, it was! We reacquainted ourselves with Hermit Crab by reading the book, then reading Learning to Love Them’s craft Instructions. Which, I’m going to tell you is not what we ended up doing…so sorry! But really that’s one of the most fun things with crafting, you can change it up and let your imagination run.

We were supposed to turn the items into a windchime with the craft sticks glued in a star shape, with ribbons dangling down, and the seashells attached. You can find a whole bunch of these on Pinterest, a lot use an actual starfish instead of the craft sticks, but the craft sticks make a very nice substitute.

So let me tell you how we changed this up – and I promise it wasn’t intentional, it just sort of happened. We started out decorating the shells, just like Hermit Crab decorates his. I pulled out the craft glue, glitter, and a plethora of beads, then we headed outside to enjoy some sunshine. Hint: Outdoor crafts mean less clean up for Mom!

We reused the bubble mailer our book and craft came in for a decorating station. Unfortunately, the glue I have hates coming out of the tube, so we took the top off and I just let the girls have at it. If I had thought just a little more ahead, we would have used some paint brushes to paint the glue on the seashells.

As it was, we had to let our decorated shells dry overnight…for a couple of nights. By the time we were ready to turn the shells into wind chimes, we took a look at them and decided we really liked how pretty they looked on our table. We now are immensely enjoying the sparkling covered seashells as a table centerpiece.
