    Funny Gifts?

Do you give funny gifts?  I’m not really a funny gift giver. I like to appeal more to the sentimental side of people when I give a gift. I enjoy the thought going into a gift. The hunt for that perfect gift that someone will cherish for years to come (or as long as it will take them to eat…I give a lot of food gifts).

So I can’t really think of any funny gifts I’ve ever given. I’m not sure I’ve ever received a funny gift either.  Though there was this one time, my brother gave me, I guess a funny gift. I thought it was pretty neat, and I still have them.

One part of the gift was a Barbie Wedding Dress (no doll included). His reasoning behind it, was because someday I would get married.  True that! Maybe I should have looked to that dress for inspiration before purchasing mine, but I didn’t. I still have it somewhere though!

The second part was a model car. It too is in storage somewhere, or I would tell you what model, but it is a nice silver car.  My brothers reasoning for this gift? Because someday I would have my license and be driving around.

Mind you at the time he gave me these, I was I think 10 or 11. I thought they were the coolest gifts ever!  He was probably trying to be funny.

Now cards! I do have a funny card from my brother. The picture was 2 eggs sitting on a beach. One was cracked and frying. The other had his sunglasses on and relaxing with a quote bubble “Bob forgot his sunscreen” or something to that effect.

How about you? Do you give funny gifts?
I’d love to hear about them.

Halloween Costumes – Think About It!

Welcome back to Think About it Thursday!

    Today’s Topic Is
What was your most Memorable Halloween Costume as a Child?

Before I jump into todays topic, I just want to give a Birthday Shout Out to Eschelle, blogger at Mumfection. I have loved getting to know this Canadian blogger. We bounce ideas off each other, and she has given me a lot of support here at Home Maid Simple. So please, go check her out, and tell her Happy Birthday!

I’ll be honest, I can think of many “memorable” costumes for me. I tried to think outside the box.  Most years as a young child I was a witch. Princess C is taking over that for me this year.

I’m really at a toss up for my most memorable costume. We did a lot of home made, what we could find around the house costumes. I remember one year in middle school, my aunt made a packet of pea seeds (or possible green beans). It was basically a large bag with head and arm holes cut out, and then painted to look like the front of a seed packet.
Another year, and one of the only times I remember trick or treating, my BFF and I dressed up as housewifes. We wore old jeans, t-shirts, aprons, and a bandana over our hair. Truth be told….now that I am a house wife, I tend to look like that a lot minus the bandana. Maybe it’s time to pull out my bandana’s again! I’ve still got my Red Hot Chili Pepper bandana, complete with beaded ends!

Though both of those are pretty memorable in my mind, I think my most memorable costume, was my completely crazy out of the box idea. I went as a shower.
Yes, a shower, or possibly a person taking a shower. It was pretty simple really. We bought a hula hoop (or maybe we cut mine down smaller), attached a shower curtain. Then I believe through the use of a hat and hangers, got it to balance on my head, with me inside. Thus a shower.
Seriously, I don’t know what I was thinking. I probably got a whole lot of weird looks as people asked me what I was. I guess I could have made it more scary if I added the shadow of a hand holding a knife to it. That may have been a more brilliant idea, but nope. Just me, inside a shower, getting strange looks.
Thinking about it now, and I’m reminded of the newer Charlie and the Chocolate Factory movie. Yep that was me, but behind a shower curtain, and minus the braces.

Should kids share a room? – Think About It!

Welcome to the first ever Think About it Thursday!
Your hosts for this weekly meme are
Each week on Thursday’s we will be discussing a different thought provoking topic. We would love for anyone to join with us. We will give out a pre-chosen topic a week in advance that you are welcome to blog about. BUT don’t feel you have to stick to that topic. Anything that’s on your mind that you want to share is welcome! We just offer the topic for those weeks where your mind is blank.
Alright with that out of the way, here is this weeks topic!
Children sharing a room Vs. Having their own room
Next week’s topic – What things/topics are too serious to be joked about?
This has been on my mind for a bit now. I don’t remember how long ago it was now, but within the last year, we put Princess V (our oldest) in her own room. We felt it would make bedtime smoother. So far it has actually worked pretty well. The younger two girls still share their own room, and of course Prince L has his own room. I like the set up. When we first decided to put Princess V in her own room, Mark wanted to put one Princess C in her own room, and keep Princess V with Princess R. It was really a hard decision. We ended going with Princess V because as the oldest we can trust her to go to sleep on her own, while we help the others.
Why not Princess C? Because I know she would get scared frequently, and we would have to still help her fall asleep.
Why not Princess R? We’ve been there done that, and we still end up needing one adult in each room to keep the kids settled down and in bed.
So we went with Princess V, and really it has made for some better nights. Princess V can put herself to bed with a hug and kiss from us, then I can take care of getting Prince L in bed while Mark reads to the other 2 or sings to them with the ukulele.

What about sharing a room?  Personally I love the idea of kids sharing a room. I think it teaches them how to share a space, but still be their own person. I actually grew up sharing not only a room with my 2 sisters, but for awhile my sister just younger than me, and I shared a queen bed.  Eventually I got my own bed, and my younger 2 sisters shared the queen. It wasn’t until I was in high school and a senior that I actually got my own room. My very first room all to myself, was in the laundry room! There were some nights my mom had to do laundry late, and I just had to sleep with the dryer pounding away. I missed my sisters, but it also felt freeing to have my own room. I could keep the light on and read as long as I wanted without bothering anyone else. I could set an alarm and not worry it would wake anyone else.

So should kids share a room, or have separate rooms? Why is this really on my mind right now? Well, as we look for a new job for Mark, we also have to look for a new house. Mark would love for all the kids to have their own room. I think they should share. It’s just good for them and creating a lasting bond as siblings. If we happen to buy a house with enough rooms for each to have their own, well I wouldn’t oppose it. Having a room to go to for quiet, and “alone time” as we call it, could be nice. The problem we’re running into right now though, is Princess V will often slam her door shut and yell at her sisters to get out of her room. I feel she has become too detached from her sisters, and she’s only 5! So even if we get a house with that many rooms, I may still have them share for awhile (and then I’ll get a craft room!), just for the sake of learning to bond and work things out.

I would really just love to have some awesome bunk beds like these too:
