It was only recently I learned about Cornhole. When we moved to Indiana, I began hearing about more and more people playing this backyard game of toss. It sounded easy and fun and reminded me of the bean bag toss I’d play at school fairs.

At our most recent get together at the kids’ school, they had some official looking cornhole games set up that both kids and adults were enjoying. I sat watching and thought for more fun, there could be some fun twists on the traditional game.

So traditionally, the game is played by standing 30 feet away from the Cornhole boards and tossing a corn filled bag into the hole. Bags landing in the hole receive 3 points, bags on the board receive 1 point, and anywhere else do not receive any points. The game ends when a player reaches 21 points.  Learn how to throw a cornbag in this video I found.

Easy enough right? Well after a bit, I’ll be honest tossing a bag at a board from the same spot would kind of bore me, and I know it would bore my kids after one round. So these are the twists Mark and I came up with while talking about the game one day. I’d love to hear if you try them, and how they went.

HORSE

Just like HORSE in basketball, HORSE would be really easy to play with Cornhole. Player 1 chooses a spot and tosses the bag into the hole. If they make it, everyone else must toss a bag from the same spot and in the same manner. Players who miss receive a letter. Players who spell out HORSE are out. The last player in wins!

Longest Cornhole

This game can be really fun to introduce your little ones to cornhole. Ignore the 30-foot foul line with this version. Begin by standing right next to the cornhole board. Everyone takes a turn tossing the bag into the hole. As each person makes it, move back 1 foot. Once a bag misses the hole, that player is out. See how far away someone can make the bag into the hole without missing once. Furthest away wins!

Capture the Flag

Mark came up with this, and I absolutely loved the idea! For this game, you’ll need 2 cornhole boards, and plenty of players to make up 2 teams. Every player is equipped with 2 corn bags. The goal is to be the first to get your corn bag in the opponents cornhole board. Bags can also be used to tag opposing players out or to bring team players who were tagged out back in.

Do you play Cornhole? Tell me about it in the comments!
