    It’s 6:30 AM.

I drag myself out of bed, because after 4 kids, working from home, and trying to go back to school, I’ve become a night owl instead of a morning person. Somewhere around 6:45-7:00, Little Prince awakes. He seems happy, until I pick him up. It is then he shows his true morning feelings.

“NO! Don’t put me down! No!”

“Buddy” I say, “I have to get sisters up. I have to make breakfast. I have to get dressed!” But he’s inconsolable; all he wants is me to hold him until he cane make sense of this time called morning. Then I found it, his key to a morning smile – Dannon® Danimals® Cotton Candy Smoothie, and a special coloring page.

Hoping this wasn’t a fluke of a morning, we went back to Walmart to stock up on my morning sanity saver. I had all the kids with me on this particular grocery shopping trip, so the girls were telling me all about how if we found the Golden Bongo in our Dannon® Danimals® their school would win a Play 60 NFL Field Day with the pros. Make sure you grab the specially marked packages in your search for the Golden Bongo

Having stocked up on Dannon® Danimals® smoothies, the kids all thought they’d be great to have for breakfast, lunch, and after school snack. While I generally try to limit their snacks, this is one I’m OK with more frequently as it’s full of Only the Good Stuff® – no artificial colors/flavors and no high fructose corn syrup – it’s also full of calcium and Vitamin D.

Usually twice a week Little Prince and I get together with my sister-in-law and her little boy. These 2 boys have so much fun, but with all that energy comes big appetites too. Rather then let them raid our pantry and fridge, this week I put together some Adventure Snack Packs ahead of time. All I had to do was grab one of their favorite snacks – graham crackers – and pair it with their favorite drink – Dannon® Danimals® Smoothies – and they were ready for an adventurous day.

    It was now 7:00 PM.

I slowly backed out of Little Prince’s room with a smile on my face. Hugging his favorite book, and already deep in sleep, I knew we had a successful day. From coloring to outdoor play, it truly was a day of simple adventures. I can look forward to bright mornings again, because I’ve got my stash of smoothies.

What do you do when you suddenly find yourself away from a loved one for weeks on end? Changing careers became an obvious choice for us as teaching just wasn’t working out anymore. The change, however, meant Mark had to go to 6 weeks of training before being officially hired.

6 weeks! The longest we’ve ever been apart is maybe 1 full week for him to play with the band at NCAA…and he was not missing me too much during those trips, nor were our kids old enough to really feel the effect of Dad being gone.
This, though. This has been tough. We moved 1300 miles for the job, and then he went off a couple hundred more to train. The kids are missing their dad immensely, and I’ve found it hard to go to bed at a decent hour while wondering if I should check the door locks a couple more times just to be sure.

One thing the kids have loved (and truly I have too), is that we purchased a very basic television plan. While it’s been fun for them to veg a bit while Mom tries to get work/school/cleaning done, I was not expecting the rush of commercials!

“Mom I don’t know how to make my bed, I need the zipper sheets” – Let me teach you!
“Mom I’ll never take a shower unless I can have cool lights flashing at the same time” – Take a bath!
“Mom we’ll pick up our dirty clothes if it’s a basketball hoop!” – Guess you’ll start to smell stinky!

But then. Then there was the one for CloudPets™. A stuffed animal that combined both cuteness with a special way to receive messages from loved ones. And this is what I heard

“Mom we really need a cloud pet so we can send it to Dad and tell him we miss him”.

My heart, be still. These kids love and miss their Daddy, and gosh darn so do I. So you know what? We went to Walmart and bought the Kitty CloudPet™. The way this works is you don’t actually send the CloudPet™ as one of my children assumed. No you hang out with it at home, download the free app that goes with it, and invite approved (through the parental controls!), other loved ones who may be far away to send messages to your CloudPet™. Oh and don’t forget to grab the 3 AA batteries it will need.

Currently CloudPets™ can be found in select Walmart stores, but will soon be available nationwide! We found the pallet display in the kids clothing section of our local store.

Meet Darth Kitty – the kids had to compromise on a name since one just wanted to call her Kitty, and the other wanted Darth Vader. We had a lot of fun figuring out how to get Darth Kitty set up to receive messages, and then we sent Daddy a special invite to start sending messages. You can watch a video and see just how easy the Set Up is.

After a successful test run of “Hi Girls…can you hear me? Did this work?” message, he moved on to telling them bedtime stories. He can take time whenever he has a break at work to send the message, and then I choose when to send it to Darth Kitty so all can hear together – usually as a special bedtime bonding time.

We were getting pretty sad that Dad is missing their first day of school this year. When he was a teacher it was always fun to send them all off together – school and work. But not this year. I’m hoping we’ll find a special message from Darth Kitty next Tuesday morning with some encouraging words that can only come from a Daddy on the first day of school.

I have a feeling we’ll find with this new job Dad may miss more of the special events then we’re used to. While in the past his schedule has always lined up with the kids, it will now vary from day to night, and include holidays. I’m pretty sure Darth Kitty will be put to good use during those missed occasions.

  • Learning to Live Without and Save Money

Learning to Live Without and Save Money

This is a sponsored post; compensation was received. All thoughts are my own

Sometimes I look at my life, and I wonder, how do I do it? How have we continued to make it despite the constant struggle for employment that will cover the cost of living? I’ve been reflecting on that as we begin a new adventure in a city that is literally close to everything you could ever want. The answer for us has been simple

    Live Without.

You Don’t NEED things. You can live without, and still survive. People do it all the time around the world. There are of course a few basics every human should have – food, clothes, shelter. After that, though, the rest is just to add comfort and adventure to our life. The great news is, you can find comfort and adventure without spending a fortune. In fact, you can get those things while saving money at the same time!

So I’m here today to tell you how you can save money, and learn to live without, while still enjoying life.

    Skip the Treats.
This is probably the biggest for us. When it comes to our grocery budget I’m tight. Very tight! People are always asking me how I manage to feed us with our limited budget, and most of the time I honestly don’t even know. One thing though is we skip the desserts and treats. Periodically we indulge, but they are not common in our home. If we have treats, it’s most likely homemade from scratch, like my apple pie burritos.

    Free Entertainment.
One thing I love to do is find free entertainment. When you’re living on a budget, memberships to gyms, museums.and zoos just aren’t going to happen. So instead, we walk around our local farmers market, take in some free concerts in the park, and get out in nature. Mostly, though, we enjoy hanging out in the backyard, finding new bugs, and swinging on the tree swing.

    Money saving apps.
Then there are the apps. I love Checkout51 and Ibotta the most. The key to using these apps is not to let it sucker you into buying extra things just to get the money back. Just like coupons, I only use them if it’s something I’m already buying. So I may not have high returns, but every little bit adds up.

    Giving Assistant.
A new favorite discovery of mine, is Giving Assistant. After living in North Dakota I finally caved to buying more things online out of necessity. With Giving Assistant, I can do my online shopping through places like Amazon (my personal fave!); get cash back, AND donate to charity! You can choose how much of the cash back you get and how much goes to charity.
Now besides shopping my favorite site, I noticed they also have a deal with Thred Up. I’ve never personally used ThredUp, but I know it’s a way to save money on clothes. What makes that better, oh just getting cash back by shopping through Giving Assistant.

What have you learned to live without? How do you save money?
  • 5 Favorite Family Reunion Locations

    5 Favorite Family Reunion Locations

We know what you’re thinking right now: “Why on Earth am I reading an article about family travel from the same guys who print my t-shirts?”
Well, firstly: Ouch. 🙁 That hurt our feelings. You really should be nicer!

And secondly: Believe it or not, we know what we’re talkin’ about! We deal with thousands of families every year. From busy moms and dads trying to throw the best birthday, sweet sixteen, Quinceanera, bat/bar mitzvah, or graduation party ever, to families in need of commemorative t-shirts for their next vay-cay, we’re constantly working with our customers to help make their event planning experience as painless as possible.

… That includes a massive amount of listening – about things like how awesome Location X is over Location Y, and how the cabins at So-and-So Ranch can more than accommodate a family of 50. We hear it all. And after 12 years of listening, we’ve learned a lot about what makes a great family reunion. It all starts with a location.
Here are five of our customers’ favorite family reunion destinations:

Timberlock Ranch – Indian Lake, N.Y.

We’ve heard stories from our customers for years about how awesome Timberlock is, and those who talk about it have usually been taking their families there for years.
Owned and operated by the Catlin family since 1963, Timberlock is a haven for families looking to spend quality time together while having fun in the great outdoors. Whether you’re looking out for your 95-year-old grandma and her penchant wood-working (Seriously, there is an onsite supervised wood shop), or your younger cousin’s fascination with archery, they have enough family fun to keep everyone smiling.
They also offer everything from fishing, motor boating, and water skiing, to tennis, basketball, hiking, fishing, and *gasp* horseback riding. And, of course, there are the classics like badminton, tether-ball, and horseshoes.
Each family has their own private cabin, which the ranch celebrates as being basic, clean, and comfortable. Cabins come large enough to accommodate a group of eight and small enough to accommodate a couple, and each comes with separate bedrooms, sitting room, and an open deck or screened porch. OH, AND A FREAKIN’ LAKE VIEW. Some cabins include a full bathroom, while others offer shared access to “trail johns,” which are centrally located and include toilets, sinks, and hot showers.
Just don’t look for electricity outlets, ‘cause you won’t find ‘em here!

Snow Mountain Ranch – YMCA of the Rockies – Granby, Colo.

Every customer who tells us about Snow Mountain Ranch says that it is – by far – the best value in the Rockies, and that the YMCA staff are some of the friendliest and most hospitable in the business. Aside from being some of the most reasonably priced, the accommodations are very, well, accommodating. Guests are welcome to reserve everything from campground space and 6-person yurts (wooden platform tents lined with lattices and post-and-beam systems) to full-on 8-bedroom cabins for the whole group.
The facilities regularly accommodate large families for weddings and reunions, and have an entire team of conference organizers ready and waiting to help customers plan the perfect family get together. The ranch affords guests breathtaking views of Colorado’s famous Winter Park and Fraser Valley, and comes with all the fixin’s you’d expect (and some you wouldn’t): guided hikes, sleigh rides, archery, swimming, roller and ice skating, along with sleigh rides, cross country skiing, snow tubing, dog sledding, rock climbing, and more – most of which are completely free.
If your family is looking to reunite on the cheap without skimping on the fun, this is the place to do it.

Atlantis – Harborside Resort – Paradise Island, Bahamas

Atlantis Paradise Island is a far-and-away favorite among our customers, and that’s an understatement. For families not exactly looking to “rough it,” Atlantis is a no-brainer. Crystal clear blue water, white-sand beaches, literally hundreds of family-friendly games and attractions, dozens of quality restaurants, and the largest casino in the Caribbean (because a family reunion is about more than just the kids!) all make for one of the best family reunion experiences imaginable.
Of the six Atlantis resorts on Paradise Island, Harborside Resort is most popular for family reunions because the one-, two- and three-bedroom residential-style villas are as close to home as you’re going to get. Additionally, the three-bedroom villas can comfortably accommodate 10 people!
Located a little further away from all of the “action” at the main resorts, Harborside offers larger groups a little more intimacy and quietude, without completely separating them from all the fun. Free shuttle service is provided to all the other areas of Atlantis Paradise Island, and there’s plenty of on-site fun to be had, too.
Kids can go swimming with friendly bottlenose dolphins and sea lions, hang out with sharks, snorkel, and scuba dive in one of the resort’s 20 designated swimming spots, or immerse themselves in the ultimate 141-acre Acquaventure, filled with water slides, river rides, and other aqua thrills.
The spacious villas, coupled with all the fun and entertainment for families of all ages makes the Harborside Resort at Atlantis the perfect place for any size family to catch up and come together.

    Hilton Head, S.C.

Our customers always come to us talking about a variety of resorts, hotels, and timeshares on this laid back slice of American pie, but one detail that remains consistent —  Hilton Head Island, located on the coast of South Carolina, about 20 minutes northeast of Savannah, GA, is one of the best family reunion destinations in the country.
Just 12 miles long from “heel” to “toe,” the tiny shoe-shaped island is home to some of the country’s most beautiful beaches, national parks, and nature preserves, and offers plenty of spacious fun for families looking for the best reunion possible.
You’ll find any kind of accommodations you could ever want here, from beachfront villas and golf resorts, to plantation-era colonial rentals with wraparounds and draping Spanish moss. With everything from biking trails to golf courses galore, Hilton Head is the ideal locale for a family looking to be transported to a simpler, more laid back time.

    New York City, N.Y.

We know what you’re thinking – a big group staying together in the Big Apple sounds like a big… headache. And on the surface, you’re right. But New York City is also filled with heritage, culture, and history – just like your great big family.
And that’s what makes it the perfect destination for a family reunion. Take the kids in your crew out American Museum of Natural History, where they’ll have access to over 45 permanent exhibition halls, a planetarium, a gigantic library, and a literal maze of over 25 interconnected buildings, all housing millions upon millions of fascinating historical artifacts. And when feet grow tired and backs become sore, take the group outside and enjoy an afternoon grazing in the magnificence of central park.
And if your family’s roots extend overseas, what better reason to go on a tour of Ellis Island, where you’ll be able to search through a database of over 51 million passenger records, and help discover and celebrate your family’s past.
Of course, we can’t forget any of the world-famous shopping on 5th Avenue, the entertaining allure of Broadway, the family-friendly adventure of The Bronx Zoo, or any of New York City’s hundreds of other awesome things to do.
If you want to bond and catch up with family and never have a boring moment, New York City is probably a better choice than you think!

  • Daylight Savings Time Sleep Tips

    Daylight Savings Time Sleep Tips

This post is sponsored by Sleep Number. Opinions are 100% my own.

This Sunday is Daylight Savings Time. Every year my newsfeed floods with friends and the dread of kids losing that extra hour of sleep. No parent wants to lose sleep, because come on, most of us are probably running on very little sleep as it is.

Sleep Number recently took a new sleep survey and put together some tips to help you get through this weekend without feeling like you lost any sleep. Rather, you may even feel more rested! I’ve added a few of my own tips as well.

    Start a day early

This is something I truly think makes a difference in the mindset. On Saturday, I automatically start thinking of everything as an hour later. Lunch at 11, dinner, at 4 or 5, and bedtime for the kids at 7. By thinking of everything as an hour later, you lose your hour during the day before, instead of at night when your body is recharging.

    Screen Free Zone

Survey results indicate that people who use devices in bed are more likely to feel they don’t get enough sleep (51 percent). 66% of respondents bringing devices to bed are from the Western US.

You’ve heard it before, I’ll repeat it again. Keep the screens out of the bedroom. Screens have a tendency to keep us awake, for me mostly because it draws me in – ooo facebook, hey another Instagram like, I wonder what I need to work on tomorrow…. You know how it goes.

Make a bed on the floor

Alright, this is not just a Daylight Savings Time sleep tip. No no, this is my personal tip for sleeping anytime with small children. I know many of you have kids out there like mine. They get up in the night. No real reason, other than they woke up and have this incurable need to wake up mom. I get why some couples buy a King size bed! We prefer our Queen, though, so my solution is a floor “bed”. Basically, I toss an extra pillow on the floor before I fall asleep, and have a blanket or two with it. The older kids know to just lay down and go to sleep. The younger two are still learning, but it keeps them near me, without sleeping on me.

    15 More Minutes

Over half – 54% – of survey respondents report they are not getting enough sleep to be at their best.

Sleep Number suggests adding a mere 15 minutes into your sleep schedule. Baby steps I’ve learned are the key to long term success. Add 15 minutes, and start feeling more rested.

    Monitor Sleep

58% of survey respondents wish they knew more about how to improve the quality of their sleep, yet only 16% actually monitor their sleep habits. Also, women are more likely to monitor their sleep then men.

I am bad at this. I really don’t monitor my sleep at all. The harder it has been getting with the kids, though, I’ve been thinking more about just what kind of sleep I’m getting.  Sleep Number’s Sleep IQ technology offers a simple solution to those who want to know better sleep.

    Prep Breakfast

Again, this works great for anytime, but especially Daylight Savings Time. If you don’t have anywhere to be early Sunday morning, prep breakfast the night before. Set out bowls for cereal, cut up some fruit, toss some Oatmeal in the Crockpot, whatever you want for breakfast. Then when the kids or spouse wake up early, and you want to sleep in, they don’t have to bother you for breakfast!

What are your Daylight Savings Time tips?

  • How to Start a Hobby

    How to Start a Hobby

    How to Start a Hobby

Picking up hobbies always seems to be easier when you’re a child. When you’re in school there are so many different clubs and groups you can join to expand your interests and learn new things. However, once you’re an adult getting into a new hobby requires a bit more work.

Hobbies are a great way to make friends, expand your knowledge and take a little time for yourself. Even though it might take a bit more time and energy to get into a new hobby, it’s definitely worth it.

    Start With Smaller Hobbies

If you’re looking into different hobbies, go with something smaller first. Take the focus away from watching TV or sitting in front of the computer for hours. For example, you can go for walks around your neighborhood or volunteer once a week at an animal shelter. Do something that gets you away from your usual habits and gets you into your hobbies.

    Expand Your Knowledge

Just because you’re done with your formal education doesn’t mean you have to stop learning. Many fun and exciting hobbies stem from wanting to learn new things. If you’re interested in learning new things, educational apps can be a perfect way to get started — and at no cost. Looking into classes at your local community college can also be a good place to start.

    Expand Your Knowledge

    Try Something You Wouldn’t Normally

For many of us, venturing out of our comfort zone is a little too scary to try. However, exploring new options could lead to something you really enjoy — and you would never know you liked it if you hadn’t gone outside your comfort zone.

    Remember Your Past

While it’s good to try new things, there’s nothing wrong with digging into your past and remembering the things you enjoyed as a child. There’s a good chance you will still enjoy the things you liked when you were younger. For example, if you were a fan of playing pretend when you were younger, joining a theater group could be good hobby for you to try.

    Start Collections

Collecting can be an excellent and fulfilling hobby for most people. Whether you’re interested in stamps – which have become a classic pastime for a reason – action figures, comics or even antique teacups, there’s certainly something for you. Be sure to start with some research so you know what you’re getting into.

    Get Creative

You are never too old to learn an instrument or start drawing. You can take some lessons to help learn the basics or simply try to teach yourself to the best of your abilities. Writing can also be a good way to express yourself and vent any negative emotions you may be feeling. The great thing about creative hobbies is you can express yourself in a healthy way.

Get Creative: join a local theatrical group

    Work With Your Hands

If you’re interested in doing more physical work, many hobbies can be suited for that. Making models — airplanes, cars, whatever you’re interested in — can keep you busy for hours and leave you with wonderful designs.

    Check Out the Community Center

Your local taxes go toward supporting your area’s community center, so you might as well take advantage of the options they provide. There are usually a wide variety of classes you can sign up for at low cost, such as yoga, knitting or swimming. Reach out to your community center to find out how you can get started.

    Get Outside

There’s nothing quite like enjoying the great outdoors, and many hobbies take that into account. Running or marathoning are good options, but make sure you work your way to the intense races. Geocaching combines the thrill from exploring and the exercise from hiking for an exciting hobby that can literally keep you on your toes.

Picking up new hobbies leads to some great experiences. You can meet people with similar interests and you’re keeping yourself busy and active.

  • Robot Turtles on the Road

    Robot Turtles on the Road

When I was a kid and we’d go on vacation we always made sure to bring a bag of games. Hotels rarely had more channels than the local news to watch, and after a long car ride, no one really wanted to watch TV when we got there.

As we got ready to move our family 900 miles, with many nights in a hotel I knew I needed to set aside some games. We ended up staying in a hotel 4 nights, with not much to do on any of those nights. The kids were more active and bouncy then normal from abnormal daytime naps and having nowhere to run around the majority of the day. I was really glad I packed this game bag come 9pm at the hotels.

We had recently got Robot Turtles from ThinkFun in the mail, and although the kids and Dad had played it, I hadn’t had a chance to sit down with them yet. The game promotes basic coding skills for kids ages 4+. With my new found love of computer oriented stuff and HTML coding I periodically have to figure out with the blog, I was really excited for this one. Especially if my 4-year-old could also play with us.

Seriously, such a fun game!! It wasn’t coding like I thought it would be but really is just the basics. The kids are “Turtle Masters” while an adult or older child is the “Turtle Mover”. Or think of the kids as the programmers, and the Mover as the computer. The kids really wanted to move their own
turtles, but when I explained it as me being the computer, they really got into it and loved giving me commands.

There are 3 levels to Robot Turtles. We’re currently mastering Level 1 still, but eventually, we’ll add laser beams, and ice blocks and crates. Obstacles the kids must learn how to program around.

Night 3 in the hotel was draining on everyone’s patience and attitude, so thank goodness I had Robot Turtles packed. We sent Prince L off with Mark, while the girls and I got some sillies out playing.

  • For the Beauty of the Earth

For the Beauty of the Earth

On this beautiful Memorial Day, we decided to take a family trip up to Heber Valley and walk around the Cascade Springs. It is a beautiful area. If you live in Utah, or ever have a chance to visit, I recommend taking some time to visit this natural beauty. While walking around and taking photos of the scenery and the kids, I couldn’t help but think of the words to For The Beauty of the Earth by Folliott Pierpoint.

For the Beauty of the Earth
For the Beauty of the Skies

For the Love which from our Birth
    Over and Around us lies.

For the Beauty of Each Hour
Of the Day and of the Night

Hill and Vale, and Tree and Flow’r
Sun and Moon, and stars of light

For the Joy of Human Love
    Brother, Sister, Parent, Child

Friends on Earth, and Friends Above
For all Gentle Thoughts and Mild

I hope on this Memorial Day, you’ve taken a little time out to spend with your families. They are the reason men and women fight for our country, to protect our homes, families, and freedoms. To them I say Thank You – from the bottom of my heart, you are appreciated and not forgotten.
  • Joy in the Home

    Joy in the Home

A couple weeks ago I was feeling on top of the world. There was just this high optimism for life and everything in it. As I got into bed one night, the word hit me

    JOY

I was feeling an immense amount of Joy, and for no particular reason other than I am healthy, I have 4 healthy kids, a wonderful husband, extended family that is amazing, a roof over our head and food in the cupboards.

Can life really be any more simple than those things?  Those are the things that truly bring us joy.  So I decided I wanted to display this Joy in my home. I knew I wouldn’t always be feeling so upbeat, but if I could create a constant reminder for myself to have Joy, then the down days wouldn’t have to be so bad.

I had this idea to create a sign that read JOY, and then next to it have some of my favorite family pictures displayed. Before I even had a chance to come up with my own design, I found myself at a workshop with Steffany and Melanie from the blog Find it Make it Love it. I was so thrilled when the craft they shared fit into my JOY vision.

So of course, I picked up all my supplies right after the workshop and set to work making their IKEA candle dish turned picture frame. Once I had the kids at school, and Prince L sleeping it was just me and Princess R. I set her to work with a new tracing book we bought, and I got started on my crafting. Picking a picture of each of the kids was extremely difficult! Either they were too close to their face, or too far away. I finally had my decisions, though.I did my cut outs slightly different, only because I’m very visual, and don’t trust myself completely – so I used the scrap from the circle cut out to trace my pictures.

Princess R was pretty distraught when I cut off Prince L’s feet, and she started taking off with all the pictures of her. I guess she was worried I was going to ruin all the pretty pictures. Once it was all done though, she thought they were pretty nice.

The large candle dish turned chalkboard was perfect for my new word – JOY. Mark kindly jumped in here and added his artistic talents to the sign. Just another little joy found in spending time with my husband.

Everything has a meaning on his design, but at the moment all I can remember is the stars represent our 4 children and our biggest joy. He’s got such talent.

Once we had these hung above the desk, I realized just what a mess I had allowed this space to become. So not only did doing something crafty add a nice touch to our wall, it also spurred me to get some extra cleaning done, booyah!  I feel I can be much more productive in this space now instead of feeling overwhelmed.

    What brings you JOY?

How to Successfully Have Kids Share a Small Room
These days it might seem that having a room all to themselves is a right of passage for kids just as soon as they are born, or at least as soon as they get old enough to ask for one. There are many advantages to having children share a room, however, even when you have to tackle challenges like having a boy and girl together or fitting everything into a small space. Here are the best tips to make the most of a small, shared room to maximize the potential and minimize the bumps!

    Store and Organize Vertically

In small rooms, floor space is especially tight, and if you’re needing to fit in two beds it becomes even more so. Of course, there’s always the old standby of the bunk bed that you can turn to, but often when children share a room they’re too young to be sleeping in a bunk. One of the best ways to store and organize vertically is by utilizing bookshelves for far more than books. Bookshelves can be used to store toys, books, games, and with the purchase of a few baskets even essentials like diapers and clothes! You’ll be amazed at how much more clean and open the room feels if you add in a few large book cases. Far better than huge toy boxes, with shelves things are easy to see and access, making it much more likely that they will actually get used. Be sure to secure them to the wall with brackets, not just straps, in order to ensure the safety of your little monkeys! You might also consider having a small step stool in the room to help them reach high shelves, rather than climbing on the case itself. Another option is to secure many different shelves to the wall at different heights.

    Take Full Advantage of Closets

When it comes to children’s clothing when you hang them up they are considerably shorter than adults and leave a lot of empty space underneath. Be sure you’re taking full advantage of this space by also thinking vertically in the closet! There are a couple of different ways you can do this–for example:

In my son’s closet, I again took advantage of shelving options by adding in a small case and storage bin. On the side of the storage bin are sacks with all their blocks. This is a great place to store things like games, puzzles, doodle pads, and more! Since in my daughter’s closet I don’t have as much empty vertical space I turned to boxes. Using two empty cardboard boxes we did a few different craft projects and created a dress up clothes and dress up accessories trunk. It keeps all the tutus out of the way most of the time, and gives me an easy way to haul them out into whatever room I want when it’s dress up time!

    Maximize Your Space Options

When you’re considering how to tackle storage for clothing take stock of what you have available. If you have large closets and one dresser, hang all the clothes that you possibly can. If you have the opposite hang only clothes that would get wrinkled easily. Store all the rest in drawers or on shelves. For the clothes that you have in drawers and baskets, roll them — don’t fold them! You might have learned this trick for traveling but it works just as well for everyday life too! It’s amazing how many more size 4T pants you can fit into a drawer when they’re rolled rather than folded and piled on top of each other.

Store extra blankets, out of season clothes, and clothes that are too large for the moment underneath beds.

    Less Really is More

When you have little space to work with embrace simplicity. It’s far too easy to allow the room to become overly cluttered and chaotic feeling. Box up any toys that aren’t currently being used and loved. Set a reminder in your calendar to swap them out in 6 months. Teach your children of keeping only things that they loved and enjoy. Each time you rotate toys help them pick out any they would like to donate or sell. This also applies for books–although it might be hard to think you could have too many books they can quickly overtake a room. You can always take advantage of your local library to continually have fresh books in your home without it eating up all your space.

    Let Them Express Themselves

Let each child have at least one “wall” for themselves. On it you can hang decor they like or that fits their personality. Although gender-neutral colors work best when you have a boy and girl together, they can still use their favorite things without it clashing. For example, walls themed with flowers are a nice offset to Planes, Trains, and Automobiles. The most important thing is to let them have a space they feel is all their own–and less about making it to the cover of Better Homes and Gardens.
