Grab a bite to eat with these Christmas breakfast ideas from Weekend Bites

Wow, Christmas is coming up fast. I keep thinking I have more time to prep everything – shop, wrap, mail, bake – but then I realize I don’t. It could possibly be because I just got around to changing our November calendar out to December…  I digress. One of my favorite traditions, and fond memories from childhood, was our Christmas breakfast. The rest of the day we pretty much snacked on whatever, ate candy and oranges from our stocking, but not for Breakfast. No, my dad always made us his dutch poffertjes. I try to do the same for my kids, but we also mix in Mark’s childhood breakfast of Christmas Crunch

Do you have a traditional Christmas breakfast, or does it change every year? If you’re looking for something new, I’d suggest one of these delicious looking recipes from last week’s party. Who doesn’t love bread first thing in the morning covered in a glaze?

Merry Christmas! The kids are finally in bed here, and I’m just waiting for Mr Claus to get here to I can go to bed. It’s been a beautiful day, but the highlight of our Christmas Eve was taking cookies to our neighbors and singing some carols to them with our local LDS Missionaries. It helped remind me of our Savior’s birth again, and got me through the rest of the day solo parenting the kids. We whipped up some pizza for dinner, and I even made tomorrow night’s dinner tonight. We’ll have 16 people over for Christmas dinner, and I am just so excited for the full house!

I am wishing I had had more time to bake this week. You all shared so many delicious looking recipes. So despite Christmas baking being past, these recipes are ones I can still make and enjoy.

  • Tender Mercies and Renewed Hope

    Tender Mercies and Renewed Hope

It was Friday Morning. I had a list of a million things to do, especially since it was the kids last day of school before 2 weeks of winter break. A paper to write, a speech to record, a house and laundry to clean, plus a myriad of blogging backed up just waiting for pictures, editing and a good story to go with it.

But I didn’t want to do any of it. I wanted to curl up in a corner somewhere and cry. I don’t know why. Lots of reasons came to mind on why I could possibly be feeling this way during one of my favorite times of the year. Family that is struggling, but too far away for me to help; My family too far away to spend any portion of the holidays with; old homes and friends being missed in my heart; a husband who works incredibly hard, but we see for only short moments in the early morning and late evening. The feeling had been weighing me down for a good portion of the week.

    Knock Knock Knock

It was Mark’s day off, and we had been offered a night out without kids, something I wanted, but at the same time didn’t. How could I go out when the kids get even less time with their dad than I do? Why do I feel guilty when people offer to watch my kids? The downward spiral was coming on quicker than I wanted.

    Knock Knock Knock

It was someone at the door. I mistook the sound originally for Little Prince trying to tap play dough out of it’s container. It was my visiting teacher (a program in the LDS church to inspire friendships, and make sure no one is overlooked). We didn’t have a visit scheduled for today…did we? I thought to myself. No no. Just stopping by to say hi, and Merry Christmas. Here’s a bag of popcorn, a card, and a talk from Elder Holland.

I love Elder Holland! Thank you so much for stopping by I said. She was just what I needed in the midst of that downward spiral. She reminded me that I am loved, cared for, and thought of. That I am a good mother and wife. A date suddenly sounded great again, and the guilt left for what originally felt like me pawning the kids off. !

Mark came out and found my crying on the doorstep. Worried something terrible had happened, he came out all concerned. What happened?

My visiting teacher took over “Oh I just gave her a hug and reminded her she is loved. We woman need to hear that from each other sometimes.”

Yup pretty much. But to me, in that moment it was more. It was a reminder that my Savior loves me too. He knows my heart. He knows my struggles. And in that moment He knew that I needed a friend, and reminder of that love.

Friends, it’s Christmas. The celebration of the birth of Christ. While we remember the simplicity of His birth, let us simplify our lives and hearts. When we simplify, we are more prone to hear the quiet promptings of the Spirit. Whether you know your effect on someone’s life or not, when you follow those promptings to visit a neighbor, or stop by a friends house just because – you may just be the angel they need in that moment.

Amidst the hustle and bustle of the season, from shopping and shipping, and wrapping presents, remember the best present of the season is one led by the Spirit of the Lord. Be a blessing to others this year by being a friend. I know that the Lord is aware of each and every one of us. He loves me and He loves you. He knows your struggles and heartaches.

Have a very Merry and Blessed Christmas.

Asleep on the Hay: A Dust Bowl Christmas by Ben Sowards

It’s Christmas Eve when a knock comes at the door of Paul’s family farmhouse. A small family is stranded due to a broken-down truck and seeks shelter for the evening. Paul’s grandfather not only welcomes them in, but offers them dinner and a bed for the night. Even though it is a season of giving, Paul’s heart is not filled with charity. It’s the height of the Dust Bowl and food is scarce. Why should he share what little he has with strangers? Worse, in order to help the sick baby, Paul will have to sell his beloved calf to buy a part to fix the truck.

Angry, he retreats to the barn, where he sleeps and dreams of faraway Bethlehem. In his dream, he visits Mary and Joseph, and their newborn son, Jesus. The family offers Paul food and shelter and warmth—extending to him the love and charity he lacks and teaching him of the true meaning of Christmas.

Asleep on the Hay on Amazon

    My Review:

Every year for Christmas we get a new book. It’s one of those traditions we’ve been able to hold on to throughout all our moves. This year I was excited to receive Asleep On the Hay as our new Christmas book. Books that incorporate a little bit of history while still holding the kids attention will always be a winner in my eyes. Before even starting the story, I explained to the kids what the Dust Bowl was. We then got into the story. With tender hearts my children gasped, cried, and cuddled in closer as they followed Paul through the tough choice of giving up his best friend in order to help someone else. My favorite part of the book was the last page. I won’t spoil it for you, but I just loved how it ended.

  • Moscow Ballet’s The Great Russian Nutcracker

This post is in sponsorship with US Family Guide bloggers. All opinions are solely my own.

Holidays are in full swing and it just doesn’t feel complete without a performance of the Nutcracker Ballet. Ever since I went with my mom as a toddler, I’ve been hooked on the ballet.

Moscow Ballet's the Great Russian Nutcracker

Saturday Venice and I got to attend Moscow Ballet’s The Great Russian Nutcracker in the Murat theater at the Old National Center in Indianapolis. It was quite a treat. We dropped the other kids off at my sister-in-laws about 2, and then made our way to the theater. Though I live in Indianapolis, I’m on the outskirts, and haven’t driven much in the city. I thought I was giving myself enough time to get to the theater, but I totally should have left sooner!

Moscow Ballet's The Great Russian Nutcracker

When we got to the theater, the line was out the door and wrapped around the parking lot! So even though we were there a good 30 minutes early, we stood outside for 30 minutes. Thankfully the theater understood most people were still trying to get in, so they started the performance a half hour late.

Once we found our seats, I kept sneaking a peek at Venice to see if she was as excited as me. She most definitely was. Worried we wouldn’t get to our seats, Venice had me skip the concessions and souvenir table to get inside!

Moscow Ballet's The Great Russian Nutcracker

Being a good patron of the theater, I did not take photos during the show. But the costumes were just as bright and awesome as the ones on the shows website. Absolutely awesome show! Venice’s favorite was during the second act watching the Arabian dancers. I would have to agree with her. I never knew anyone could bend or hold their bodies up like that! Just fantastic!

During the intermission, we did manage to grab a snack from the concessions. Venice had a box of M&M’s and I chose a Salted Caramel Chocolate Croissant. Oo that was so decadent, and unlike any food I’ve had at the theater before. I offered Venice a bite but she stuck with her M&M’s.

Moscow Ballet's The Great Russian Nutcracker

Planning a trip to Moscow Ballet’s the Great Russian Nutcracker? Here’s my takeaway

    • Get there early!
    • Don’t expect the same Nutcracker you’ve seen before. Act II was much different then ones I’ve seen before.
    • Bring a little spending money to check out the Souvenir table!

Christmas Makeover by Cami Checketts Amazon bestselling author

Chelsea Jamison has been infatuated with Drew Stirling longer than she’s loved playing basketball, high-top sneakers, and the Knicks. Unfortunately, all Drew sees is the kid who kicked his trash in the high school free throw contest and not the girl whose heart breaks into a fast dribble when he’s near.

Drew makes an unexpected visit home to Echo Ridge and their friendship picks up where they left off as they scheme to make a teenaged boy’s Christmas dreams come true. When Chelsea realizes she’s fallen for her best friend, she wonders if there is any hope of a relationship with Drew or if she’s stuck in buddy-status for life.
The Candy Counter Heiress by Lucy McConnell Amazon bestselling & award-winning author

Reese secretly takes matters into her own hands hoping to save her parents from additional worry and prove herself capable of running the company. Her deception deepens as she ropes computer guru Andy Edwards into helping her expand the business. Reese wanted to shake things up, but she wasn’t planning on her heart getting caught in the mix by Andy’s stolen kisses. If she can hold it together until after Christmas, then she can reveal her successful online company and her feelings for Andy. Unfortunately for Reese, even the best laid plans can melt like chocolate.
Soda Fountain Christmas by Connie E. Sokol Amazon bestselling author

Keira Kenworth has one focus this holiday season: save her father’s old-time department store from bankruptcy. She is not focused on Tayton Wells, the tall, dark, and genius marketing guru from downtown New York, hired to make it happen. He is as doubtful that her nostalgic connect-the-town ideas will succeed as she is about his numbers-first plan. However, it’s not just their different approaches that cause sparks to fly. Working together on a fast deadline to save the store before Christmas, the unspoken connection between them grows. But will the tough decisions they face drive them back to their separate worlds, or will they lead to the beginning of love?
Christmas Makeover by Heather Tullis Amazon bestselling author

Jonah Owens thought moving to Echo Ridge to open his art gallery would solve all of his problems. The need to sell his grandma’s house adds an unexpected complication. It would be easier if his neighbor didn’t have all those farm animals.

Kaya Feidler’s family has owned their land for nearly a hundred years–long before the neighbors were there. There’s no way she’s giving up the animal therapy business she’s been struggling to make profitable. She gets a temp job helping Jonah in the gallery. Spending time together is a recipe for romance, but can they overcome their own hangups to be more than friends?
Hope for Christmas by Rachelle J. Christensen Amazon bestselling & award-winning author

Anika Fletcher hates Christmas–its promises of good tidings and hope for the future are as tinseled as the ornaments on Kenworth’s Hope Tree. Despite her feelings, Anika wants to maintain her daughter’s faith in the magic of the season and gladly accepts a second job working with the handsome Carlos Rodriguez to restore Kenworth’s old fashioned soda fountain. Carlos is no stranger to hard times and slowly shares his life of light and joy with Anika as they work together. Just as her fragile soul begins to feel hope again, an ill-timed act of charity changes everything. Anika isn’t sure who she can trust or if hope is worth nurturing–especially at Christmas when it’s easy to enjoy a kiss and believe love can last longer than the season.

  • Merry Christmas

    Merry Christmas

    Dear family and friends,

This year we did not send out cards or even a Christmas letter. We’ve always been pretty good at this, but this year has been an interesting one. So forgive me for writing to you so publicly. Next year I hope to be more on top of things.

We began 2014 settling nicely in Provo, UT. We really enjoyed living so close to our families again, and had a lot of fun getting together with my parents, and some of Mark’s siblings.

Mark went through a couple different jobs this year, but after much prayer, and temple attendance we found a new teaching opportunity in North Dakota. After a phone interview Trinity High School in Dickinson offered Mark the music teaching position. We had a week to pack our things in August and move before school started. Getting back into the teaching and music world has been wonderful.

Adelina (HI!) has been working hard blogging (and if you’re reading this letter, well…welcome to my blog!). She has turned it into a business and feels great she can bring a bit of income into the home. With the success of Home Maid Simple, she decided to go back to school and get a degree in marketing. Thanks to Western Governors University, she is able to do this on her own schedule and completely from home.

Princess V turned 8 this year. We really enjoyed having family visit for her baptism. Mom and Dad are very proud of the decision she made to get baptized. Princess V is in 2nd grade now, and doing wonderfully. She has made many friends at school and church, and really loves going to Activity Days.

Princess C is in 1st grade and loves it! Going to school, making friends, and learning so many new things. She is a natural scholar. This year Princess C got to play Gretl in the Sound of Music at Trinity. She and Mark had a lot of daddy daughter bonding time as they spent many nights practicing. She has amassed a bit of her own fan club among the high school kids as well. Princess C is full of love and she shows it to everyone.

Princess R has been hard at work learning her letters this year. She seems to get numbers a bit better. My favorite though, is when she mixes up X and S while singing the alphabet. Her goal is to learn all the letters so Mom will take her to lunch at McDonalds. We’ve been getting letters to start kindergarten registration, and I’m just not sure I’m ready. She is a social butterfly though and I know will thrive with other kids around. She also loves taking selfies with my phone.

Prince L turned 2 this year. He talks very well, loves giving hugs, and has a thing for trains. Living in Provo we were right next to the tracks, and now in Dickinson we are again pretty close to the trains. He loves listening to their whistles blow. Recently he has branched out to loving tools as well though. His favorite shows are Bob the Builder, and Chuggington.

It has been a year full of adventures for our family. We know that we are blessed though. As we continue to look to our Father in Heaven, and put our trust in Him, things have turned out alright. North Dakota has been a blessing to our family, as we’ve learned to love each other closer, be grateful for the things we have, and most especially for the friendships we get to make. May you all feel the spirit of Christ this season and throughout the year to come!

    All our love,
    The Priddis’

Have you made a gingerbread house yet? Why not mix it up and build a Planes Hangar instead! Are your kids home for the Christmas break? Are they driving you nuts? Yeah mine too. Don’t get me wrong, we’re having lots of fun, but without the regular routine, I’ve heard probably a million times in the last 2 days –

    • I’m bored!
    • We have nothing to do.
    • You won’t let us do anything!
Well, we had to remedy that asap! Really though children, you have a room full of toys and dress ups, I’m sure you can find something to do – am I right?! Earlier last week, I was walking the aisles of Walmart since it’s too cold to go outside, and I found the Planes Fire and Rescue toys on Rollback! Woot Woot! I know the kids are going to get new toys on Christmas, but that’s not until Thursday and we needed something to break up the monotony of days spent indoors.

My lightbulb dinged, so I grabbed a couple of the Planes:Fire and Rescue Character Assortment die cast set ($4.97 each!). I thought how fun would it be to make our own hangar – it’s like a doll house but for planes!I get home and I’m pulling out the cardboard to make this cool vision in my head, when in walks Mark and says something like “Why don’t you make it out of gingerbread?”.

I knew I married this guy for a reason. So I put my cardboard away and started making the gingerbread – which soon became apparent I was terrible at! Seriously, ya’ll my ideas were failing left and right, and my beautiful vision was dimming. That’s when Mark stepped in and I stepped back with the camera, and the vision in my head became a reality plus some!
We didn’t want the kids to know what we were doing, so we sent them to the other room and turned on the Disney Planes Movie.

First you’ll want to make some gingerbread. We doubled this recipe from Food Network. Follow the recipe up until rolling it out. Before you roll the dough, split it into three portions. Roll out on the back of 3 cookie sheets, or if you have a cookie sheet without a lip use it like normal. Bake according to directions. When it comes out of the oven, you’ll want to start cutting your shapes while it’s still hot! Otherwise it will harden and be impossible to cut.

Sheet 1 you will cut it in half width ways. Then round the tops. Measure the sides to make sure they are an even length all around. On one side cut out the doorway for your planes. Cut the cut out in half to attach as doors to the opening.

Sheet 2 you will just cut in half, and trim the edges to be the same height as your front and back pieces. These will be your side walls.

Sheet 3 is your roof tiles. Trim the edges, then cut in strips width ways. Let all the pieces dry sufficiently, about an hour or 2. Save all the trimmings, and crush finely for ground covering to complete the scene.

While Mark was busy with the gingerbread making and assembly I cut out the Planes: Fire and Rescue logo from the packaging. It made quite the nice little touch to our finished hangar.

Once the pieces are sufficiently cooled, it’s time to start assembling. We’re big chocolate lovers, so we decided to go with some good old chocolate frosting for glue. Any type of frosting will work, though royal icing will stick the best, we just used a creamy frosting. Watch this quick slide show of the assembly process.

The final touch before presenting this to the kids was the gumdrop propeller. Mark saved one edge from the sheets of gingerbread and carved it into a propeller. We added some frosting, sprinkles, and a gumdrop nose.

Finally it was done. My vision of awesome was complete! So although I am most definitely NOT an engineer, Mark saved the day and made the kids some of the happiest ones around.

Presenting the kids with their Gingerbread Plane Hangar with the new Disney Planes toys was a blast, and the exact kind of break we needed. They had fun flying Dusty over the chocolate pretzel forest, landing him on the roof, and attempting to eat the roof.

Need a last minute Christmas gift? Also on Rollback at Walmart are:

    • Disney Planes Flight to the Finish Speedway
    • Disney Planes Fire & Rescue Die-Cast Vehicles, 3-Pack
    • Disney Planes Fire & Rescue Deluxe Talking Vehicle Assortment
    • Disney Planes Character Assortment die-cast set
By the end of the day our Plane Hangar didn’t look too much like a hangar anymore. The gumdrop propeller had been replaced with a half eaten Santa, and the roof “caught fire” and collapsed on the poor characters. It’s all good though, because the Disney Planes are all pretty tough!

If you’re looking for some last minute fun before Christmas, and haven’t made gingerbread houses yet, I suggest you mix it up and try the Gingerbread Hangar instead.

What will you be doing to entertain kids this week? Share with me your holiday plans!

Music Lovers Christmas Stocking #GiftingAudio #ad
This one time, 6 years ago, I was cooking dinner, when BAM! A speaker falls off our cupboard, and we find ourselves in the ER getting staples in my head. It’s a moment I like to periodically bring up when Mark comes home with new speakers that “were an amazing deal, and you can’t beat the sound quality!”  Sometimes I put my foot down, and make him get rid of some before he can bring more into the house. Little does he know, I actually bought HIM a wireless speaker this year.

It’s a rare occasion, but the first time was when he sold his humongous sub woofer, and like a year later I found it at a yard sale. Yeah, we once again sold that. Oh well. It was big clunky, and hard to move. This year I knew I was going to theme his Christmas stocking around music. I wasn’t sure where to begin at first, but then I came across the JBL Flip 2 Speakers
JBL makes shopping online easy this Christmas season #GiftingAudio #ad

I was already familiar with JBL speakers thanks to Mark’s love of them, so I just knew this was going to be the start of his stocking. The Flip 2 Speaker is portable, wireless, and runs on Bluetooth. Shopping on JBL’s website was really easy with free ground shipping, 30 day returns, and lifetime support! Those are the key things I look for when shopping online.

I am in love with the size of this speaker. Nice round edges, and a compact size means I just might be able to stop bringing up the falling speaker story…maybe. You know what else is great about it’s size? It fits in a Christmas Stocking!

The star has arrived for his stocking, so I’ve been on a hunt for other items to really make his Christmas morning a fun surprise. Obviously we needed an iTunes gift card so he could download all his favorites – like Mozart and Smashing Pumpkins. He’s a well rounded music lover as you can see.
After I picked up the gift card, I found this really awesome old music book. Hello! I just can’t resist books, but old books with music? Mark and I can agree on those.
Old music books make a great gift to the music lover #GiftingAudio #ad
Next I found a couple more fun items that really spoke to his personality. The Reindeer playing a saxophone is a given for Mark. I included an Ocarina, boat whistle (OK admittedly my parents gave him that one year…it just looks cool here), a sopranino recorder to play along with the music, and one of my absolute favorite tie finds ever – complete with saxophone tie pin.

I put together Mark’s stocking based on his personality, but I waned to give you some other ideas as well that would go great as a gift with the JBL Flip 2 Speakers

I love this time of year! I know I’ve talked about how Fall is my favorite season, but the transition from fall to winter is right up there. Snow falling, Christmas carols playing, and lots of family time spent together. I really don’t think anything beats spending time with family. This Christmas I want to spend more time sharing experiences.
Here are simple ways you can share the Christmas experience with your family and friends with gifts from a Hallmark Northpole!

    Traditions

A couple years ago I decided I wanted to start collecting Christmas stories. One’s that we would pull out each winter and cuddle up as a family to read. It’s the ideal holiday scene isn’t it? Families in warm pajamas, a fire lit, the tree glowing, and a good story being read. Instead of just buying a bunch all at once, I wanted to make it a tradition where each year we pick one new book to add.

This year we bought Once Upon A Northpole Christmas with the Find Me Santa Snowflake. We couldn’t have picked a better book to start out this season with the idea of experiences. Once Upon a Northpole tells the story of how one Christmas there almost wasn’t enough magic – but one little elf with the help of his friends wrote notes to all the kids to help bring it back.

    Time with Family

While picking up our book I came across this fun Bake like an Elf set. Princess V and I have started cooking together, and even started her own cooking show, so I knew this was going to be the perfect gift to get her. Originally I was going to wait until Christmas to give it to her, but she was invited to a talent show, so what better way to share her new talent then with some Christmas cookies?

Oh she and I had so much fun using the stocking and mitten measuring cups to make cookies for her friends.

Share Traditions and Treats with friends

We’ve done a lot of moving, but this summer was easily our furthest move from all our friends and family. When we met another family at church with kids all the same ages, going to the same school, with our oldest in the same class – we became fast friends. Making friends so quickly really helped us with this move. I wanted to let them know just how much their friendship meant to us, so we decided to share our Christmas experience with them.

We found Snowby the Polar Bear: Snowby’s New Friend with a plush Snowby to pass on the tradition of a new Christmas book to our new friends. Then we baked up some cookies, because really – is it Christmas without cookies?

    Games

We picked up all these fun items at Walmart down what I’m dubbing the “Northpole” aisle. There was so much goodness down here, it was hard not to leave with a little of everything. Princess R and Little Prince were having a blast turning on every single Dance Like and Elf music player, and throwing the Magic Snowballs around.

I may head back and grab one of the family games like Rooftop Drop or Peppermint Ring Fling without kids so we can surprise them one night.

How will you share the Christmas Experience this year?
