    Holiday Traditions

Shortly after getting married the holidays rolled around, and Mark and I had to quickly learn how to balance our two families, while starting traditions of our own. Living a few hours away from our families, and eventually having an ocean between his parents, has helped us create many of our own holiday traditions. Some have stemmed from traditions we each had as a child, and some are brand new to us.
Perhaps you are just beginning your family and looking for some new ideas to bring to the holidays, or maybe it’s been a couple years and you’re looking for a change up. Surely something on this list will become a yearly tradition in your home.

    1. Cookie Baking Day: Set aside one day every year to not do anything but bake cookies with your kids, or maybe your grandkids. Enjoy the laughter and joy that kids are sure to bring to this tradition. It is something they will always remember.  I made some gingerbread cookies last week, that were so fun to make, but even more fun to decorate with the kids, that I knew between the smell and smiles I would have to do this again next year.

    2. Christmas Book: Starting last year I decided I wanted to buy one new Christmas book with the kids each year. Reading is important, and having a seasonal book is a fun way to promote it with the kids. This year we decided to read one of our books each night. We started with the our new book this year (The Polar Express), and will continue until Christmas Eve when we read the story of Christ’s birth. This tradition evolved from my parents Birthday Book they let us pick out every year on our birthday.

    3. Decorating Day: Set aside one day each year to decorate as a family. Put up the tree, lights, nick knacks, and stockings.  Have some goodies, and hot chocolate to end the night. This might be a good night to let the kids sleep under the Christmas Tree as well.

    4. Holiday crafts: Find some holiday crafts to do with the kids, and make it a part of your holiday traditions.

    5. Sledding: Although it’s something you ought to do (if you get snow) every year, making one day all about sledding, and playing the snow will delight your children. Put off errands and chores, and go have some good old fun.

    6. Looking at Lights: I have so many fond memories of riding around in our car all bundled up just to look at Christmas lights. My dad was pretty good at finding neighborhoods that went all out. We now enjoy doing the same thing with our kids. Hearing their shouts of joy every time we’d come to some holiday lights put us all in a festive mood – especially after a trying day.

    7. Christmas Breakfast: Make something special for Christmas morning breakfast! It doesn’t have to be fancy, or time consuming, but keeping it the same year after year will leave fond memories for your child. My dad always made us Poffertjes, while Mark’s mom always bought them Christmas Crunch. We have evolved the two of these breakfasts into one – I now make Aebleskivers (glorified poffertjes) and if we get lucky to be in the store the day they sell Christmas Crunch it is added to our Christmas morning as well.

    8. Cultural Holidays: Branch out from your childhood Christmas celebration and incorporate a holiday tradition from another culture. For my family, we celebrated Sinter Klaus on December 5th by leaving our shoes by the door with carrots for his donkey.

    9. Penny Auction: Say what now? This tradition stems from my dad and his childhood, but is one I would love to bring back now with my kids. Throughout the year little trinkets, usually from yard sales, would be gathered and stored away. Come the holidays, and these would all get wrapped and tossed in a big red Santa bag. My Dad then donned the Santa hat, while one of us kids donned an elf costume. We’d invite friends and neighbors to join us. Every one was given 10 pennies to bid on presents from the bag. You never knew what you’d get, and bigger definitely did not always mean better.

    10. Pick a new ornament. This is a simple tradition that can be added each year. Go out shopping as a family for one new ornament for the tree.

    11. Open a present on Christmas Eve. When I was a kid we always got to pick one present to open on Christmas eve. The only catch was it had to be from someone that was present so they could watch us open it. Christmas morning was then a free for all with no order opening presents. In Mark’s family they also got to open one present, but it was always pajamas. We have continued with the opening of pajamas on Christmas Eve.

With new traditions, and thinking outside the box, you can make memories that will last a lifetime with your children. It may take a few years to find what works the best for your family (it’s taken us 8), but once you have it, keep it going.

Please share your holiday traditions with me!

    Christmas train

    The Christmas Train

In this children’s picture book, President Thomas S. Monson recounts a Christmas memory from his childhood. As a boy, he yearned for an electric train. To his delight, on Christmas morning he got exactly that a train that operated through the miracle of electricity. Then he noticed a second train that his mother had purchased for the boy down the street whose family was struggling. Although it was only a wind-up train, it had an beautiful oil tanker car, which little Tommy wanted for his own. Soon after, Tommy s mother invited him to accompany her to the neighbor s home to deliver the gift. Young Mark was thrilled with his new train and, of course, didn t notice the missing train car. However, a remorseful Tommy did. What happened next will bring the spirit of Christmas into every heart and home. Illustrated by renowned artist Dan Burr, The Christmas Train is sure to be a classic Christmas story and a beautiful addition to every Christmas library.

Includes a QR code for a FREE download of President Monson’s narration of the story!

  • What to get your Blogger Friend for Christmas

What to get your Blogger Friend for Christmas

So it’s December, and you’re down to the last few people on your Christmas list. What do you get that one friend – the blogger friend – maybe it’s your spouse (hint hint Mark…), or a sister, maybe your sister in law, or even your mother. You want to help them pursue the dreams they have for their blog, but you’re not sure what they really want or need.

I asked around my blogging communities what they are wanting for Christmas, and added it to my list to bring you this helpful list of Christmas Gifts to give your Blogger Friend (or family member). Of course I say Christmas, but these gifts are appreciated for any occasion by the blogger in your life.

    1. Blogging Conference. This is at the top of my list of what I would love to receive. A huge part of blogging is networking with other bloggers, and the brands we want to work with. There is no better place to do that then at a conference. The biggest problem bloggers run into if they want to attend a conference is the cost. They usually run no less than $100 and can be upwards of $400 to attend a 3 day conference. This cost usually will not include travel and accommodation expenses. If you choose to send your blogger to a conference, you can get together with other friends and family to gift this item. Just do a little research first. Sending your friend to BlogHer Food, when they don’t blog about food would not be a good fit. Check for local conferences too. I’m personally pulling to go to the Build Your Blog hosted here in Utah this year. It saves me the cost of travel and hotel, and it’s a pretty good price at only $149.

    2. Craftsy Class. If a conference is out of the budget, you may want to look into Craftsy.  Craftsy classes have something that can fit into any one’s lifestyle, especially a bloggers.  They have food, sewing, gardening, paper crafting and new photography classes.  You can buy your blogger a Gift Card so they can choose the perfect class for them.  Price range on these are from $30 for one class up to $75 for 3 classes.

    3. Erin Condren Planner. A few years ago, when I first started blogging as more of a business than just a hobby, I asked for a planner for Christmas. Mark got me this beautiful full sized planner, that made my life as a mom and blogger so much easier!  That was one of the most organized years of my life. I don’t know why I didn’t buy a new one for the new year. I have heard some amazing things about the Erin Condren Life Planners, so I went looking at them. WOW, it is just what I need!  2 page monthly spreads, perpetual calendar, laminated tabs, stickers, folders….the list just keeps going. As planners go though, they are on the pricier side at $50 and something a frugal blogger will just put on their wish list. Grab a pack of colored pens to go with this gift.

    4. Photography Equipment. It’s a guarantee that if you are a blogger, you will be taking a lot of photo’s. To work with quality brands, you need quality photos. There are a plethora of ideas I’m going to list for you under this topic, but the main one is a nice camera. Get your blogger a high quality digital camera, or if money isn’t an issue, a nice DSLR. If they already have a good camera though, here are some other items to help them get better photo’s.

    • A photography book, such as the one I pictured above – Food Photography for bloggers. Just remember to keep it relevant to what they write about. Obviously food photography will not help someone writing about family/relationships, or crafting. Amazon has a great books on Photography for Bloggers (<–affiliate link)
    • Light box, backdrops, and lighting. There are many DIY tutorials out there for putting together a light box. Make one for your blogging friend for a simple, affordable gift that will do wonders for their pictures.  In a quick search though, I found this (affiliate link–>) LimoStudio Photography Photo Studio Lighting Kit Set  for a great price of  only $33.75. This would be the perfect starter set up.
    • Props. What’s a photo without props?  In many of my recent recipe photos, I look in my cupboards, and think to myself “boring”. I’m ready to have more colorful dishes to go with my food, for that added pop of excitement in the photos. This gift can be as simple as going to an antique store, or thrift shop and picking up some mismatched dishes that fit into your price range.
    • PicMonkey Royale.  I LOVE picmonkey. I edit all of my photo’s and make fun banners like the one above, using Picmonkey. They have a free service, but when you purchase the premium subscription, you can do so much more, and create all kinds of fun images. Picmonkey is also great for creating printables.
    5. Rafflecopter Premium Service. If your blogging friend runs a lot of giveaways, look into gifting them a subscription to Rafflecopter. This is my personal favorite way to run a giveaway. They have a free version, which is what I use, but they also have different subscription levels, that make entering the giveaway so much easier for our readers with one click links to follow on social media, and pictures to show you exactly what the prize is you’re entering for!

    6. Website Hosting and Domain Name. I’m sure you’ve all been to a blog that has a web address with .blogspot.com at the end. This just means the Blogger uses google’s blogging platform, and basically google owns it. Last year Mark purchased me my very own domain name http://www.homemaidsimple.com from GoDaddy. I got to drop the .blogspot and have more ownership of this site. I still use google’s blogger platform though I’ve been perusing self hosted wordpress for a year now. Through December 31st, GoDaddy is offering a domain .com transfer for only $7.99

    7. The Gift of Time.  My friend Angelia, from Tim and Angi’s blog shared with me one gift that any blogger, no matter what they blog about, can appreciate, and that is the gift of time. To create quality content that our readers want to read, and will find useful in their life, it takes time. Sometimes I have to ask Mark to please take care of the kids, so I can shut our bedroom door and really think about what I’m writing, and sharing with you all. There are just some days, that trying to work with the kids playing on and around me is impossible (though most of my writing is done with a child cuddling on my lap). An offer to have my kids go play with friends would be a wonderful gift. Or bring my family dinner sometime, so I can have just a bit more time in my day.

Hosting Your First Christmas Dinner? Your No Panic Guide

Perhaps you were just married this past year, or maybe it’s your first year in your very own home, but whatever the case may be, Christmas will be held at your home this year, and excitement is echoing from wall to wall, but you’re also a little bit nervous. How can you prepare for this big event?

    Organized Lists

Have a list of everything, so you aren’t in a frenzy on Christmas day, take note the exact location of all dishes (pantry, fridge or freezer), and write down the time that you want to prep them and/or put them in the oven to heat. Keep this little list in your pocket throughout the day, and you’ll always feel in control.

    Decorations

Going overboard with decorations isn’t a must for holiday parties, but it’s nice to have at least some reminders of the holiday. Be sure to include a nativity in the decor setup to act as a reminder of the true meaning of Christmas. Set up your Christmas tree in a spot where all of your guests will be able to see it beautifully decorated with a few gifts beneath its branches, have your favorite Christmas music playing softly in the background and warm scented candles (or to be on the safe side, plug-in room fresheners) to complete the cheerful holiday environment.

    The Final Preparations

Make as much of the food in advance as you possibly can, but some items, such as gravy, generally need to be made on the spot. However, Christmas stroganoff, with exception of the noodles, generally freeze very well, so make items such as that a day or two before the Christmas party. Even the smallest of homes can be suited to accommodate a large number of people, so take some time to arrange the dining room, and this might involve moving tables around to different angles or setting up a children’s table in the kitchen. If enough seating isn’t available, consider having a buffet style meal, but don’t panic if it seems that space will be limited, because on Christmas, most people are bouncing from house to house, so people will be in and out.

    The Greeting

When people come into your home, you want them to feel warm and welcome, so offer to take their coats, and hang them the attire up where they can see to avoid confusion when they’re preparing to leave. Laying them on a bed is an option; however, if you have pets that sit there, it’s best not to do so for allergy purposes. Once they have said hello to everyone, offer them a drink, tell them to make themselves at home and let them know where the food and the plates are, and don’t be shy about taking that first scoop of dip if you think it will get other people eating.
Above all else, enjoy this very first Christmas in your home, and don’t stress, just do your best. Employ the help of your nieces and nephews who are always eager to help out, and give them a special treat at the end of the evening for helping, like a traditional chocolate orange or an iTunes gift card.

    Il Volo: We Are Love. Music for the Holidays {2012 Holiday Gift Guide}

    Music for the Holidays

I love this time of year. Have I mentioned that? It is one of my most favorite seasons, because of the feeling of love and caring in the air. There is a special kind of feeling around the holidays, most describe as the “Christmas Spirit”.
I start getting the feeling about the beginning of October and it lasts through to the New Year.  One way I like to indulge in the Christmas Spirit, is by listening to music. Not just your ordinary radio station music, but music with a meaning.  We all know the classic Christmas songs, and I think everyone can get into the spirit with these songs playing.  I like to add more classical music as well this time of year, and other vocalists.

    Rockefeller Center Christmas Tree Lighting

Did anyone watch the Christmas Tree Lighting at Rockefeller Center this year? I love watching this program every year, but this year I only caught a little bit of it. It’s not just any Christmas Tree Lighting, there is live music and an overwhelming feeling of the Spirit of Christmas. You can’t help but feel joy watching this program.  Anyone know where I can find it online? One year I’d love to attend it in person!
This year Il Volo, a new Italian teen sensation, performed at the Lighting. I just became acquainted with their music, and it makes me slightly more bummed that I missed them singing. They are a very talented trio of boys.

    Il Volo: We Are Love

Il Volo just released their 2nd music CD, We Are Love, in November. I have been listening to it weekly as I try to keep the Spirit of Christmas in our home.  These boys really do have some amazing talent. It doesn’t matter that I don’t understand their Italian, I do understand the feeling of love and joy behind their music.
We Are Love includes Il Volo’s soaring version of the Aerosmith/ Diane Warren hit “I Don’t Want To Miss A Thing” (“Questo Amore”) along with a new Warren song “I Bring You To My Senses”.  Il Volo also performs a cover version of the U2 Hit “Beautiful Day” and the title cut “We Are Love” both in English. The group’s members are Piero Barone (19), Gianluca Ginoble (17) and Ignazio Boschetto (18).

  • Christmas Shopping {Date Night}

    Christmas Shopping {Date Night}

Have you finished your Christmas Shopping yet?  I didn’t think so.

A great way to connect with your spouse is to go Christmas shopping together.

    Time: Plan on 4 hours
Items Needed: A small notebook, pen, and a budget

While we were visiting family last weekend, Mark and I took the time for a date.  Family is our ideal babysitter for the kids, and they also live closer to the stores we like to shop at …. Ikea …..

We weren’t planning a date on Black Friday, especially since it was also my Dad’s Birthday, but it worked out that we were able to sneak away. We started the day off with a wedding (congrats Aunt Sandra!), and then moved on to our shopping. We headed up to IKEA in Draper. Ever since they opened a few years ago, it has been Mark’s favorite store. He often pleads for us to stop if we’re anywhere near. Since we had no kids with us and I am not currently pregnant, I was perfectly fine heading there.

We decided we’d walk around the display area first. I may have coveted some desks and lamps on the way. Eventually we ended up in the childrens area. Our initial plan was to buy the girls a table and chairs, but none were the size I wanted. So we decided to grab some lunch with our free Ikea lunch cards (compensation for our cupboards being damaged when delivered, and having to personally make the trip to return and exchange them).

We needed a plan of attack if we were going to do any shopping while we were out. So I grabbed the notebook I carry in my purse, along with my special pen.  We wrote everyone’s name down we needed to buy for. Then we proceeded to list what we would like to get them, what we had already purchased, and how much money we had to budget for it all.

It was one of the most enjoyable lunches I’ve spent with Mark, and is definitely motivation to get back into weekly dates with each other.

We left lunch to grab the few things we could get there. Instead of a table for the kids, we got a double sided easel – chalkboard and whiteboard, with markers and chalk. From there, we perused the self serve items on the bottom floor, and checked out. We made a few more stops on the way back, and were only slightly past the time we gave my mom.  With the wedding included, we were gone about 5 hours. Just him and me, me and him.

    Author Kimball Fisher’s Top 10 Christmas Books {Blog Tour}

Thanks for stopping by Home Maid Simple in the Finding the Baby Jesus blog tour!
I had the opportunity to ask the Author for a Top Ten List.
Since the theme is obviously Christmas, I wanted to know Mr Fisher’s Top Ten Christmas Book List.
    Here it is!

1 – A Christmas Carol (Charles Dickens). Best Christmas book ever. Tiny Tim, Scrooge, and the Spirits of Christmas.
2 – The Night Before Christmas (Clement Clarke Moore). Of course! Not even mice were stirring.
3 – How the Grinch Stole Christmas (Dr. Seuss). From a modern genius of both word and illustration.
4 – Rudolf the Red-Nosed Reindeer (Robert L. May). For the kids. Old ones, too.
5 – The Little Match Girl (Hans Christian Anderson). Look for the volume illustrated by Rachel Isadora.
6 – Nutcracker (E.T.A. Hoffman). The story that inspired Tchaikovsky’s ballet.
7 – The Polar Express (Chris Van Allsburg). Haunting words and illustrations. Modern classic.
8 – Louisa May Alcott’s Christmas Treasury. Charming stories from the author of Little Women.
9 – The Best Christmas Pageant Ever (Barbara Robinson). A personal favorite and one of the inspirations for FINDING THE BABY JESUS. My wife and I loved this story, which although shorter than many, was always too long to read out loud in a single evening. I wrote FINDING to be read in a single sitting (even with most wiggly children).
10 – The Christmas Box (Richard Paul Evans). A fairly recent feel-good story.

Thank you so much Mr Fisher for sharing your favorite Christmas stories with us, and giving us one more to add to our list!

Finding the Baby Jesus by Kimball Fisher

After being forced to wear lederhosen for the annual holiday card picture, twelve-year-old Chris thinks that the least his parents can do is get him the Tony Hawk skateboard he wants for Christmas. But when he recovers the hand-carved Baby Jesus that everyone thought had been destroyed in a fire the year his Grandma died, Chris realizes that some gifts are even more important than skateboards.

When the author had to discontinue a cherished tradition of reading Christmas stories out loud with his family and holiday guests each week in December, he wrote Finding the Baby Jesus. He had been unable to locate enough meaningful stories that could be read in a single sitting with wiggly children.

Praise for Finding the Baby Jesus:
“Tender and true, this warm Christmas tale brought tears to my eyes.”

–Heather Vogel Frederick, author of the much-beloved Mother-Daughter Book Club series and Oregon Book Award winner for The Voyage of Patience Goodspeed

“A touching story that speaks to the importance of family, giving, and the true spirit of Christmas.”

–Matthew Kirby, author of Icefall, winner of the Edgar Allen Poe and the Pen Center USA Literary Awards for Children’s Literature

    “Deeply moving. Poignant.”

–Deborah Halverson, former editor at Harcourt Children’s Books and author of Honk If You Hate Me, a Gayle McCandliss Literary Award Winner

“The perfect little book to tuck away with your Christmas things and bring out year after year to read with family. As mother to three boys, I can’t imagine a better protagonist than Chris. His typical teenage attitude followed by the softening of his heart towards a friend teaches a poignant and very relatable lesson on the true meaning of Christmas.”
    –Amazon review

“After I read this short story I felt like I had read a novel–every sentence is packed with action and imagery. I was emotionally connected to the characters, and the story is touching. I didn’t see the plot twist at the end coming! A great story to read every Christmas.”

    100 Days to Christmas ebook

Christmas is right around the corner! Are you excited? I am. I just love the Christmas season. It can be so stressful though! Always so much to do, and not enough time. Sometimes all we really need is a bit of organization.

100 Days to Christmas eBook 2012 | 100DaystoChristmas.com I had the opportunity to read the 2012 edition of 100 Days to Christmas ebook from ListPlanIt.

I loved this book! It helped get me even more excited for Christmas because I think this year, I’ll actually be ready, and less stressed. I always try to keep the holidays from being stressful, but it always sneaks in a little anyways.

ListPlantIt is known for their many lists helping people of all walks keep their life and business organized. From Back to School lists to Social Media Tracking sheets, ListPlanIt keeps you organized!

100 Days to Christmas starts Septemeber 16 and goes right up to Christmas Day. Each page has a simple task to do to get ready for the holiday. From chores, to family fun, this book will  help you balance your holiday season. I especially liked when it suggested going to an Apple Orchard as a family. It gets you out spending the holidays where it’s most important – with family! But you are also getting stuff ready for holiday baking.

Besides the daily task, many of the pages come with suggestions for lists and downloads you can get from ListPlanIt. There is a special code with each book to get to the downloads, so you’re all covered for the holidays. Yay for awesome resources!!!

I suggest getting this soon, so you can start going through it, and be ready for each task.  Some, like the apple orchard visit, may take some beforehand prep – like finding an apple orchard. The ebook is only $5, a great deal for such a comprehensive and useful book. However, you can also get it for FREE if you purchase a ListPlanIt membership. You can view all the details on ListPlanIt.com
