Amber Griswold (10) loves going to Walt Disney World and Disneyland. She’s also very crafty and after a recent vacation at Walt Disney World she decided to try and recreate her favorite scents from her trip in candles and wax tarts. So, she started with Disney snacks. Main Street Popcorn, Pineapple Whips, and even Turkey Legs.

We were sent the Main Street Popcorn to try out. We pulled it out all sneaky like, and asked the kids to guess the smell. You can tell we’ve never walked down Main Street with them or anywhere near a popcorn shop. They were guessing anything that looked yellow – banana? lemonade?

I could smell the popcorn immediately, and finally gave up on the kids, and let them in on the scent. That was followed by “Oh yeah, that does smell like popcorn!” Silly kids.

Now I have to keep my eye on Ambers scents, because I really want the Pinepple Whip next!

Inspire My Life “Women” Conference coming to St. George

I’ve been itching to go to some kind of conference for about a year now. This past weekend we watched the 183rd Annual General Conference of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints. I love listening to my spiritual leaders (prophets and apostles), give us direction. I always come away feeling more inspired and motivated to become a better person. This conference though is one we watch at home on the television set (of course I could go to the conference center, but that gets crowded!)
I was so excited to hear about another conference coming up this weekend:

Inspire My Life: Women

Excitement was kicking in, I started making plans for my kids, and thinking of inviting my sister in law to come with me. Then I looked at the calendar. It would happen to fall on a Saturday that I can’t go (furthering Mark’s career, an equally good thing to be doing). When you ask?

Why it’s THIS SATURDAY: April 13th, 9am to 6pm

And how much does it cost, you ask? Well, that’s the best part because IT’S FREE!!!!

You really can’t beat that! Can you? Well, they can!

Although it is free to attend they are asking for donations to the Dove Center – a crisis center that benefits women effected by rape and domestic violence. So you can go and enjoy free of charge some inspiring music from people like Katherine Nelson (played Emma Smith in the Jospeh Smith movie) and Charley Jenkins. Then listen to motivational speakers David Christensen and Vickey Pahnke Taylor.

Or you can also go, free of charge, but know you did some good by donating to the Dove Center. Not only will you be edifying yourself at this conference, you’ll also be making difference in the lives of many women.

Reading with Scholastic

I just realized I missed the school book fair! I always loved the book fairs in elementary school. We’d go with my mom, and she usually let us pick out a book or two. Of course once we had our own money, we’d buy our own books.
I went through a Roald Dahl phase and would buy any of his books! I just loved his sense of humor.

Not that I need any more books, but they are one of my favorite educational tools. Holding a book between your hands, reading, getting lost in the story. That means learning to read as well. It’s something I want my kids to enjoy, without feeling like it’s a task.

I’m really excited about Scholastics new Ipad App – Storia. You can download books from scholastic, and they sit on your “shelf” on the app. The kids can pick their book, and it will even read the story to them. Which at my kids age is perfect. There have been a lot of books Mark has downloaded onto the Ipad, and reads to the kids at bedtime. Some of them read for you, but here’s the difference I’ve seen.

On Storia, the words being read are highlighted, so your child can actually follow along, and learn the words as well as enjoy the story. Of course you can also turn off the automated reading, and read it yourself – another great option.

Our favorite book so far has been Clifford. It’s a character the kids are familiar with, so it holds their attention. Another great aspect of Storia are the activities. On some of the pages a little lightening bold will appear. You touch the lightening bolt, and activities will pop up. It’s not just fun and games though, it’s things like “put the story events in order from first, next, last” and “match the characters with their names”. So it promotes paying attention to the story and what is happening. They’ve got something for every level of reader too.

The App is FREE to download (even better, right?) and comes with 5 Free Books! You can download more books from scholastics website. Here is the big kicker though, right now when you buy certain Kellogs boxes of cereal, you can get codes for $5 giftcards to Scholastic! We haven’t redeemed any yet, but I’ve got quite a few (Fruit Loops and Krave were on sale…we stocked up). Mark and I have been reading The Hunger Games together, and we need the last book. Guess what? Yep, Storia has it for download! I might just use our coupons for that.

I’m not a big electronic fan (hahaha, says the blogger), but I do love this app. I find myself wishing Mark could leave the Ipad home somedays so we can read the books on Storia.

Deo Perfume Candy – Perfect Neighbor Gift (Free Printable) ! #MompactLNO

Have you seen this new Perfume Candy? I was a bit skeptic when I first heard about it. It’s pretty good though. Supposedly after eating it, you’ll sweat the smell of roses. Although I haven’t noticed smelling any different, I do enjoy the taste of this candy. It’s got a bit of a fruity flavor. Which after reading the ingredients, I’m assuming comes from the Tangerine flavor added.

Whoa, little digression there. Anyways, this candy comes in regular and sugar free options. I personally preferred the regular. It has more flavor than the sugar free ones, and I’m personally all about taste. My 2 year old girl enjoys them as well….must be why I haven’t smelled her dirty diapers for a bit….though my 4 and 6 year old have claimed they don’t want to eat roses. Ah well, more for me and the neighbors then!
