Fashion Friday Fall Essentials

It’s not often I feel completely put together, but today was one of those days. It was freezing cold outside, as we were bracing for an incoming winter storm. My only plans on going out were to drop the kids off at school, and pick them up. No real need to dress up.
It started as a simple decision to toss on my Stars and Stripes scarf from Cents of Style. Then as I was grabbing my flip flops it hit.
Boots.

It’s been a long time since I’ve had a wedding to go to. So when suddenly I’ve got two weddings to go to in one month, I was pretty excited. The first announcement I got is for my old college roommate. We only roomed together for a year because I went and got married, but we’ve kept in contact over the years, and my in laws and her parents have become good friends over the year.

Creating the Perfect Outdoor Space

When we were looking for a house to buy, we had a hard time finding the perfect home that also had the perfect yard. Having kids that love to play outside, meant we really needed the perfect yard for them. We found a number of homes we loved, but the yards were either non-existent, or surrounded the house in a way that wasn’t kid friendly.

The deciding factor for this house we are now in, was the backyard. It was indeed perfect. The house, not so much, but we can work with that. There is only so much you can do to a yard when the house is already on it.

Now that we have the perfect yard, all I have to do is style it around us. The previous owner left a number of items with the house, including these beautiful, but in need of an up do, metal chairs.

I’m not a big fan of the red marbled look. The black I can’t decide if I still want to keep or not. I’m thinking a coat of white would really look good, but that does show more dirt outside. Either way, I’m pulling some inspiration for the fabric from One King’s Lane Soft Landing Sale (4/3-4/5).

I’m really in love with this blue leaf pattern. I think if I coupled it with a white frame on the chair, it would give a nice pop of color to our back patio.

A story of Sunglasses and Sandals

We have had a sunglasses problem over here recently. Mark wears them everywhere. He wouldn’t be Mark if he didn’t have a pair on him all the time. He recently lost every single pair (and he has like 3). We figured the kids must have taken off with them, since that’s what usually happens. They all claimed innocence though. For Mark’s birthday I let him pick out a new pair. Guess what happened? He found his favorite pair a short week after his new ones arrived. And it wasn’t the kids – no he had left them inside one of his suit coats. It was like Christmas!

Now, for me, it’s all about the flip flops. I use to wear them year round, even with feet of snow on the ground. I’ve gotten old though, and my feet aren’t as tough as they used to be. We had to stop and purchase a hot pink zebra print sandal, that I normally wouldn’t have even considered.

Dressing up a 70’s Home – Japanese Style

Our home was built in the mid-late 70’s. Besides the outside structure, many of the inside features were still a throwback to the 70’s. One specifically I hope you can all imagine, is the shag carpet on the WALLS of our basement stairwell. Though they may have had the right idea – talk about sound control. Many of the prominent walls are also covered in wall paper (as well as the inside of every cupboard, and random patches in the bathroom….).

My favorite feature though, is the glass mirrored wall in our family room.

The picture doesn’t quite do it justice. It is actually a black mirror with tan veins running through it. When we first moved in, I wanted this wall to go. It has since grown on me as Mark and I have debated what we could do with it.

Mark’s parents have been living in Japan for the past 5 years. We were lucky enough to visit them one year for Christmas. Since then, Mark and I have looked for ways to incorporate some Japanese style into our home. This wall gave us the inspiration. We’ll start with a simple buffet table in the center.

A table like this would be the perfect centerpiece for displaying our Japanese Dolls I picked up at the outdoor Mall in Sasebo. We could then store all the china we also purchased inside the cupboard – and let me tell you, we purchased china! From little sake cups to rice bowls. Sadly we’ve never had a good place to keep them.

Hanging behind the buffet table I would mount my silk Kimono – a must I insisted on purchasing. Really, who goes to Japan and doesn’t come home with a Kimono? They were hard to find though in a price range I could afford. Thankfully there were plenty of consignment stores to browse around.

Framing the Kimono would be our Japanese scrolls that Grandma P sent the kids for Christmas.

Can you picture it? Let’s go back to our Black Wall – now add the table, dolls, kimono and scrolls. Picture it on a white wall – now go back to the black wall. What a difference right? I can’t wait to get started putting it all together. I just have to decide which table I want now…
