Hygge: Learning to Relax and Enjoy the Simple Things

    Hygge: pronounced hoo-guh.

The Danish word means feeling cozy contentment while enjoying the simple things that life has to offer.

Find Hygge with Hygge Happy Coloring Pages When I first heard of hygge, I pictured myself curled up on our couch, a fire blazing in our non-existent fireplace, a good book in my lap, and a cup of hot cocoa in my hand.

Find new ways to embrace Hygge Happy with this coloring book. ad Hygge will look different for everyone. Some people may enjoy hygge while out walking. Others may enjoy it while surrounded by their friends and family with the noise of conversation and laughter.

I find hygge more in the silent moments. Moments of reflection.  Sometimes while watching my children play from a distance, though most often I find it in the simple accomplishments of my day to day activities.

Many of you may recall when I first began writing I would show you before and afters of my very messy and disorganized home. Those posts brought me a feeling of contentment. As I took the time to organize our home into the cozy space I desired, I could enjoy the little moments of my life more.

So in honor of finding hygge, I’m going to share another before and after.

Finding Hygge before and after I love this desk. We acquired it for free when some friends moved across the country and didn’t want to take it with them. It sits under the east-facing window in my bedroom and gets a beautiful morning glow across it.

It is also easy to cover it with ‘to do’ and ‘take care of later’ items. Basically rendering it completely useless for anything I’d like to use it for. Last week on my kids’ chore list, I had them clean off their desks. They were atrocious and unusable. I wonder where they got that from….

Obviously, I couldn’t be a hypocrite of a mother, so I went to work cleaning off my desk as well.

Now that the space is cleaned off, I can enjoy more intentional moments of hygge. Whether it’s reading a book, coloring in my Hygge Happy coloring book, or planning my spring garden – I’ve now got the space to do that.  Just looking at this cleaned up area brings a little of that cozy contented feeling into my life.

Hygge Happy: Coloring Pages for a Cozy Life

The coloring book featured in this post is full of beautiful artwork that you get to color! Each page is inspired by something that could be a source of contentment in someone’s life – maybe yours. On the back of each coloring page is an idea on how you can add a little bit of that hygge feeling to your daily life.

We were so thrilled to receive a copy of this book! My kids had been asking since Christmas if they could put together a Lemonade Stand. I definitely wanted them to, but I wanted to help them with their first one. The Lemonade Stand Cookbook has a great introduction to how to set up your stand and pick appropriate prices for your goodies. This came in really handy when the kids started tossing random prices on their sign.

The Lemonade Stand Cookbook has more than just Lemonade recipes.

For our stand, we whipped up some LOL Lemonade, brownies, and banana bread. A big seller was the banana bread, to which I attribute the cute packaging we found at our local grocery store. Adult Coloring Books For the Whole Family

Do you love coloring? What once was a child’s activity has quickly turned into an Adult novelty. Adult Coloring Books can be found in just about every store and have themes that appeal to both adults and kids. I received products in exchange for this post. This post contains affiliate links and I will be compensated when you click on and purchase through them.

Adult Coloring books aren't just for adults these days. Check out my favorites for the whole family. ad

As a kid, I loved to color. Of course, I never was as good as my sisters at pairing the right colors to get stunning images, but it was still an enjoyable activity.

When I began having kids, I found a lot of enjoyment sitting down and coloring in their simple kids’ books. Farm animals, tv characters, and cartoon looking people were the norm. Yellow sun, green grass, but the biggest decision was always what color should the eyes be.

Kids love to color Adult Coloring Books. ad

When adult coloring became a thing, I was ecstatic! Finally, someone realized that we never really grow out of coloring. So what is it that fascinates adults about coloring? For me, I found that going back to the simple childhood activities brought more peace and joy into my life. Slowing down and taking the time to stay in the lines and pair complimentary colors help clears my mind.

Or perhaps I’m just a perfectionist in a world of imperfections, and coloring fills this need in my mind.

Adult coloring books that aren't just for adults. ad Ever since I started collecting adult coloring books, I noticed my kids stopped coloring in their kids’ coloring books. We have a whole basket full of what is considered kids coloring books, and I don’t think I’ve seen any of them pulled out in the last 6 months at least! Why? It’s because the adult coloring books hold my kids’ attentions so much better.

We love the wacky designs and inspiring messages from Suzy Toronto’s Tingle Boots.  I’ve always loved stylish boots, and even wrote about it when I bought my first pair. I’m a country girl at heart, so Tingle Boots spoke directly to that side of me and allows me to share the inspiring messages with my girls.

Along with Suzy’s books we’ve also been absolutely loving Thaneeya McArdle’s designs for coloring. She has a coloring book for all kinds of occasions. The spiral bound is great for on the go, and outdoor coloring where you may not have the space to spread out a full book. The Perfectly Portable Pages is exactly what it sounds like – it’s small size makes waiting in doctors offices and bus lines much more enjoyable. My kids have especially loved the sticker coloring book from Thaneeya.

  • Angels Above Cherished by Shannon Clark

Angels Above Cherished by Shannon Clark

I received an Angels Above product for review. All opinions are 100% my honest thoughts.

Our children are my world. Our faith is the basis of everything else we do. If I can teach my children that they are loved, more infinitely than just by me, as well as teach them to love others with all their hearts, that’s what I want to do.

Angels Above Cherished with angel companion. ad

We received the Angels Above Cherished Book, which is meant for the young and old. They also have Angels Above Blessed Baby for babies first book and angel. I wasn’t entirely sure my kids would be into the whole angel thing. We don’t believe angels have wings, but we do believe in heaven and our ancestors watching over us. The cotton angel was a great way to introduce this belief once again.

    Cherished Angels Above

The book, however, quickly became dear to my heart. As it reinforces the notion to my kids that they are loved, and also that others are watching them. Are they making good choices? Are they being kind to friends in need? Angels Above is a cute story that takes the lessons I’ve been striving to instill in my children and brings them to life with the cotton plush angel that accompanies each book.

Lincoln attached himself to the angel more than I thought he would. With 3 older sisters, we have a lot of girl dolls and toys. He’s always trying to join in their play, but isn’t always fond of playing with the girl dolls. Having a little boy angel with removable wings has meant he can play with sisters without any fights from them on which doll he gets to be. It’s also allowed him a “friend” to play with when everyone else is at school and I’m working.

Angels Above Cherished gives young kids a forever friend.

When you purchase an Angels Above book, 10 meals are provided to children around in need through the Children’s Hunger Fund and Story Changers. To me, this makes the Angels Above books worth so much more. I can give my child a book full of values while also giving to those less fortunate than myself.

  • Pimpernel by Sheralyn Pratt + $25 Giveaway

Pimpernel by Sheralyn Pratt + $25 Giveaway

Looking for a great read to escape reality for awhile? Pimpernel by Sheralyn Pratt needs to be on your To-Be-Read pile – somewhere near the top.

    Pimpernel

    Pimpernel by Sheralyn Pratt

They seek him here; they seek him there. For centuries, the elite of the world have sought the Pimpernel everywhere. Some want to kill him, others want to hire him, but Jack Cavanaugh knows that the love/hate relationship comes with the job title.

At present, Jack is trying to dismantle an investment scheme centered in Las Vegas, but “trying” is the operative word. It’s been a month since he put the face of the scheme behind bars, yet the scam is still going strong. As Jack tries to uncover who has stepped in as the new head, what miniscule evidence there is all seems to point him back to Claire Ramsey, an introverted PhD student studying at UNLV.

If ever there as an unlikely head of an investment scheme, Claire’s it. She has a genius IQ, but from all Jack has seen, Claire’s intelligence is as much a blessing as a curse when paired up with her acute OCD. Claire can barely make conversation with the cute guy down the hall, which makes it hard to believe she could be the charismatic salesperson who is getting international businessmen to invest $5—50 million a pop.

So what is Jack missing? What is the real story behind Claire Ramsey? And once Jack learns it, will he be able to walk away?

    Excerpt

The high-pitched scream from the other side of her apartment door shattered Claire’s thoughts.

“Daniel?” That shriek had been way too high to come out of a man.

“Help!” Daniel’s voice cried out from the other side of the door.

Claire unlocked the door and pushed it open, finding Daniel cowering on the couch in sailor-themed boxer briefs. Classical music played from his bedroom, indicating Daniel had been sewing before he ended up on the couch. On the ground between them lay the lounge robe Daniel had made in his fashion design class along with his house slippers. They looked like they’d been flung at random.

“Move!” he shrieked at her, stabbing his finger at the ground like a mad man. “Take the high ground and leave the door open. Maybe it will go back to the gates of hell, where it belongs!”

Claire followed the direction of his manic gesturing, freezing when her eyes locked on something the size of her fist with eight hairy legs. “Daniel? Please tell me that is a toy.”

    “That. Is. NOT. A. Toy!”

The spider chose that moment to make its move—which happened to be sprinting her way.

Claire shrieked as Daniel motioned for her to join him on the couch. “High ground!”

Was he insane? She would have to leap over the tarantula to get to him. Why in the world would she do that when she could just run away and go to a hotel for the night?

“Voldemort?” a man’s voice said from behind her a split second before Claire backed into a male body blocking her retreat. Not only did Claire scream, but her body was suddenly possessed by an Olympic hurdler as she scampered across the living room and flung herself into Daniel’s arms on the couch.

“You found her!” a flagpole of a man from the doorway said as Claire latched onto Daniel, hiding her face against his shoulder. If she didn’t see the spider, maybe it would cease to exist.

“Found it?” Daniel scoffed. “That thing tried to duel me for my sandwich before I batted him off my kitchen table.”

Claire shuttered, only vaguely realizing that the shoulder she was hiding her face in was bare. I’ve never hugged a guy who was only wearing underwear before, she thought a moment before Daniel pulled her keys out of her hand and flung them at the ground to join his slippers and robe.

“Don’t chase it this way!” Daniel yelled at the other guy.

“Come on, Voldemort,” the spider guy cooed. “Let’s get you back into your habitat—Don’t run!

Wait, it was running? Claire didn’t want to see that, yet something compelled her to turn and look anyway.

People always said that horrible things seemed to happen in slow motion, but Claire could have sworn the giant arachnid was coming at her in fast-forward mode. In a heartbeat, she had climbed up to ride piggyback on Daniel while he responded by flapping his hands in panic as if he could fan the thing away with a light breeze.

Not only did the spider keep running, it was sprinting like an arachnid with a plan—heading straight for the couch. When Daniel backed away, Claire felt her back thump into the wall. Before he could move again, she pushed off his back to stand on the back of the couch, dropping her purse when it threatened her balance. On the way down, it ended up in Daniel’s hands and he wasted no time finding items inside and tossing them at the spider while its owner moved in to act like a human shield.

“No!” the tall guy cried as he tried to corral the beast. “Don’t throw things at her. You might hurt her.”

Just then, Claire’s favorite lip gloss bounced off the hairy spider, stunning it.

That lip gloss was dead to her—not just the tube, the actual brand. She’d never be able to look at it the same again.

    Review:

I absolutely loved this book. I couldn’t put it down, but also didn’t want it to end. If you’re a fan of the classic The Scarlet Pimpernel, then you will also love this book. Who is the Pimpernel? I’m not going to say, but I will tell you it’s the first book I’ve read that I did not see the twist coming. Most books can hide it for a little, some books are too obvious, but not Pimpernel. When the reveal came I had to reread it and flip back a couple pages to make sure I hadn’t missed something.

Ms. Pratt has captured my attention, and I can not wait to see what else she writes. Her characters are believable, and the type readers find themselves wanting to be friends with. I feel a tie to Claire Ramsey and Jack Cavanaugh now, that has me hoping to see more books featuring them.

    Sheralyn Author Sheralyn Pratt

Some describe Sheralyn as a girl who’s been around the block and worked at every shop. This isn’t far from the truth. Writing is what she loves most, however. There’s a magical power in stepping into new perspectives time and again, and seeing the world through different eyes. Few things increase empathy more than walking in another’s shoes for 100,000 words or so. At least, that seems to be the trend so far.

Some random things to know about Sheralyn:
    * She’s a wanderer (geographically)
    * She can write a novel, but doesn’t have the attention span for one page in a journal
    * She vehemently disagrees with Stephen King’s stance that authors should not watch TV
    * She is pretty much incapable of sleeping before midnight

Mothers Day is coming!  Are you ready for it? Have you found that perfect gift to tell Mom how much you truly appreciate her?

I received an e-copy of Motherhood Matters by Connie Sokol in order to share my review here.  True to any good small inspirational book, Motherhood Matters is full of inspiring tales and words of wisdom.  I was expecting to feel a nice little uplifting as I read this book, but I got so much more. I was reminded that what I do as a Mom does matter, and it matters so much more than I often give myself credit for. Connie helped show how even on those not so good days, we can still find joy and hope in the journey.

  • Ec-o-nom-ics by Kersten L. Kelly {Book Review}

    Ec-o-nom-ics:
    A simple twist on normalcy
    By Kersten L. Kelly

About the Book: Professional football players, corporate tobacco advertisers, volatile gasoline prices, and the Cold War all share an undetected commonality each is an intrinsic part of economics. Though not obvious to the naked eye, each entity shares a pattern with the others. This book helps to shed light on these mutual characteristics. It is an extensive compilation of theories interpreted using supportive examples. Economics is an enthralling science that encompasses our actions, thoughts, and emotional rationality every day in the unconscious. This book dissects economic theory into bite-size, entertaining snippets that anyone can understand and apply to their routines. It is a compelling depiction of history, pop culture, and social movements intertwined with relevant economic trends. Economics is part of daily life, and this book challenges readers to question how and why people make decisions by adding a simple twist on normalcy.

    About the Author:

Kersten L. Kelly is a self-published author of narrative non-fiction and semi-fiction books. She grew up in Munster, Indiana, and currently works in a sales role based out of Chicago, Illinois. She started writing at an early age and graduated from Indiana University with a dual Bachelor’s Degree in Economics and Communication & Culture. She then went on to earn a Master’s in Business Administration from the Kelley School of Business at Indiana University. She has a passion for learning, teaching, and writing as well as international travel in her spare time. This book is her first piece of published work.

    My Thoughts:
This is a book worth reading. Although at first I couldn’t relate very well to the examples (football games and cigarette marketing), eventually there were some situations discussed I could relate to. That’s what ec-o-nom-ics is all about. Setting out real life examples to help everyone understand the theory of economics.
I think at this time in our country it is very important for us all to understand how the economy works. We’re always hearing how the economy is bad, but how many of us truly understand what that means, and how we can make it better?  Kersten helped me see the theory of economics in my daily life.  I remember taking economics in college, and having everyone tell me good luck; as if economics was the class of everyone dreaded taking, but had to, because they didn’t understand it. I went in to that class worried it would be tough. It turned out to be one of my more enjoyable classes, because I actually understood it. Sadly, after that class I didn’t continue to pursue learning about economics. I was really glad to be able to read Ec-o-nom-ics.
I really enjoyed the last chapter “Why Does Comparing 3 Goods Change Perspective?”.  Just after reading this chapter, Mark and I drove down to find a house near his new job (yay, he got a job!).  While Mark was in the area interviewing, he found a house he fell in love with. So of course I had to check it out, and I wanted some perspective with other homes in the area. We got a realtor to show us some homes within our parameters.  We saw 2 that “fit us”. After this realtor took us around (who by the way looked and sounded just like Don Knots!!), Mark took me out to the home he had found. It was a sold by owner home.  Here is a little set up I did, with comparisons similar to what Kersten shows in her book.

      House 1 House 2 House 3
    sq feet 4000 + 2000+ 2000+
    Price 115000 120000 120000
Parking On Street 1 car garage 3 car garage

We went with house 3. Why? Well the parking was a big deal. House 1 had absolutely no where to park. So even though the square footage was amazing for the price, we really needed a place to park. House 2 had some parking, but for the same amount we were able to get triple the parking!
