  • Happy Healthy Baby Happi Tummi {Review and Giveaway}

    Happy Healthy Baby Happi Tummi {Review and Giveaway}

I love babies! If it wasn’t obvious by the fact I’ve had 4 in 6 years, I don’t know how to make it more obvious. I just love their little baby smiles. Their pure innocence, as they snuggle into you. I just love it.
Prince L is 3 months old today! Can you believe it? The time went by so fast!!  Since day 1 Lincoln suffered with acid reflux. After dealing with it in 2 of the other 3 kids, I was able to get a handle on it pretty quickly this time around.
    – stuff some blankets under one side of the mattress to create a slight incline.
    – After feeding, sit them up long enough to get bubbles out, and let the milk settle down.
    – Lots of snuggling.
Prince L still spits up a pretty fair amount, but he sleeps on a flat mattress now, and enjoys his meals. He lets me know when he needs to burp (seriously I have one amazing 3 month old!), and so I can help settle his stomach before he over feeds and spits it all up.

Although Prince L is really one of the calmest, happiest, easiest babies I have ever had, he still has his moments. Sometimes I just don’t know what’s wrong. He’s eaten, burped, had his diaper changed, and napped. Yet he is still crying and just unhappy. My arms and legs (because he loves to bounce!) can only take so much. I’ve slowly been introduced to essential oils, and natural remedies. I really like the idea.  Our favorite so far has been Lavender.

Earlier this week we tried out the Happi Tummi.  It is this really soft wrap that goes around your babies tummy. On the front is a small pouch that holds an herbal pouch.  You heat the herbal pouch in the microwave for a few seconds, and then tuck it inside the wasitband. Your baby gets a warm tummy with the calming scent from the herbs.  Guess what?  The herbal pouch contains lavender! Even if it doesn’t work to calm your baby right away, having the scent of lavender fill your nose while you comfort your little one, is just as relaxing. When you relax, your baby will take cues from you and relax as well.

Awe, sad baby! Let’s try the Happi Tummi!

After a few mintes with the Happi Tummi, calmness is achieved!

  • How to Upcycle Receiving Blankets into a Quilt

How to Upcycle Receiving Blankets into a Quilt

Don’t throw those old receiving blankets out just yet. So your kid outgrew these special blankets, but now you can turn them into an heirloom to grow with your kid. Upcycle receiving blanket into a quilt that your child will love to snuggle with. This post contains affiliate links and I will be compensated when you click on and purchase through them.
Upcycle receiving blankets into a quilt. It becomes an heirloom your child will love forever. After having 3 girls, I started accumulating pink receiving blankets. My kids grew out of them very quickly, and with Rosalina we mainly used them as burp rags instead.  For quite some time now they’ve been sitting in a closet, taking up precious space.

I was thrilled when I saw Heather from Handmade Haven had turned her receiving blankets into a baby quilt! A novel idea, I thought, and then they still sat around my house, just no longer in a closet. I finally decided the receiving blankets had to be taken care of before they were all lost.  It was time to do a little upcycling!

Upcycle Receiving Blankets into a Toddler’s Quilt

To start out, cut up your receiving blankets.  This can be done easily by folding them in half, and then cutting 2-inch strips.

    Online Quilting Class

Next, cut through the fold so each 2-inch strip is now 2, 2-inch strips.

Now you have fun designing your quilt! Don’t worry if some pieces are longer than others you can either trim them down now or after they are sewn together.
If you desired you could cut your strips down further to make separate blocks, but let’s face it, I’ve got 3 kids running around, I could only keep those scissors out safely for so long.

Once you’ve got your quilt designed, it’s time to start sewing! Make sure you have plenty of bobbin thread and spool thread.  Using a 1/2 inch seam start at one side of the quilt and begin sewing the strips together.

Once you have it sewn, trim any edges, and dangling thread.  Iron out the seams so they lay flat going the same direction.

Cut out the quilt backing – make it about 3 inches larger than your finished top.

Roll out the quilt batting, and then take your new quilt top and lay it on top.  Cut the batting so it is the same size as the quilt.

Lay out your quilt back, wrong side up. Lay the quilt top and batting on top with the quilt side facing up.  A simple cotton fabric works best for the backing since this is all sewn on the machine.

Fold the backing over so it touches the edge of your quilt top, and then again a second time over the quilt top’s edge. Iron the edge down, then pin all three layers.

Using a coordinating thread color, sew around the edge to finish your quilt. If you use fleece, remember it’s bulky, and it will “shed” into your machine. Take the time between edges to clean out your bobbin case.

TIP: Most machines come with a cleaning brush, but if yours is missing like mine, a soft paint brush does the trick as well.

You can make your quilt any size, I chose toddler bed size, but if you have more receiving blankets than me, you could make it bigger!

    Wordless Wednesday – Baby Prince

Baby Prince was born Monday the 9th at 6:14pm  Weighing in at 9lbs even.

  • April Before – Kitchen and a Baby

April Before – Kitchen and a Baby

I love this monthly link up at Shine Your Light. I’ve really been able to push some projects through this year!
This month we’ve got two major projects going on. Some people would probably call us crazy (I think we’re crazy!). The thing is, when your husband is a teacher, and they’ve got a week of Spring Break, it’s the perfect time to get some major things done!
Our first project this month, is having a baby. Baby Prince was due last Wednesday, but he’s still hanging out in my massively huge tummy (seriously, where’d my belly button go?!).  If he doesn’t decide to make an appearance on his own, I’ve got another appointment on Monday (what do you know, Spring Break means my ob took off as well.)  As long as there’s room at the hospital, we’ll be coaxing Baby Prince out into the real world!
There will be some much cuter photos at the After Party!
Our second HUGE project this month is our Kitchen Remodel. After our basement remodel last year, the kitchen was the next room we wanted completely made over. The cupboards were old, and had nails poking out of them that caught a finger on more than one occasion. There weren’t enough outlets for me to really enjoy my cooking escapades with the kids, and counter space was limited. So we sat, planned, and planned some more. With the arrival of Spring Break, we had finally created an outline of our kitchen, and purchased everything from IKEA.

It really wasn’t a bad looking kitchen, but it wasn’t very functional, or all that pretty.  We’ve been working on it for a week now. The counters are out, the flooring is gone, and the electricity is all wired! Mark is in there right now mudding the walls to prep it for paint, and we should start seeing cabinets next week.

oh yeah, we also scraped off the popcorn ceiling, and will be needing to fix that as well.
What are you working on this month?  You can link up your Before and Afters over at Shine Your Light!

  • The Nursery – After (almost)

    The Nursery – After (almost)

    Shine Your Light

Although we’re not quite finished with this room, I wanted to get it linked up with Shine Your Light’s Before and After party. We spent a lot of time in the nursery this past month, and soon it’s probably where I’ll spend the majority of my time – day and night.

First I got all of the stuff cleaned out of the room that didn’t belong. If you want to take a look at the before and just what a job that was you can view it here.  Once I had that finished up, Mark set to work painting. We had all the fun multicolors replaced with a soft baby blue in one weekend. From there it was just a matter of setting up the nursery.

This beautiful rocking chair arrived by mail yesterday (thank you so much Grandma!). Oh and the drapes aren’t actually hung up yet. We’ve got to figure out the best way to get them to hang over the blinds without causing odd bumps.

I bought the cute baskets on top of the dresser from The Foundary. The dresser was given to me from a lady in our neighborhood. We have big plans for this dresser!!

And of course the essential crib. We’ve had this piece since Princess V was born and it has held up fantastically through all 3 girls! The car seat however is brand new.
We still have a few things to add. Setting up the nursery was pretty easy, and didn’t take long at all. So why isn’t the room done yet you ask? Mark and I have been working on other projects for the nursery. The first and foremost was the puzzle. With each new addition to our family, Mark and I sit and put a puzzle together. We then glue it, get it framed and hang it on the wall. I just got the glueing done today, so we should have it hanging by next week.
Mark has also been working on a model airplane that we will suspend from the ceiling. It’s still a work in progress though.
  • Delivery Day – Guest Post

Being ready to pop Baby Prince out in just over a month, I was excited to have Katie guest post today! Getting ready for delivery day can be stressful, exciting and nerve racking. What do you take? Are you ready for this new addition to your life? There are so many choices to make. How do you know which one is right for you?  Hopefully this article will help you get ready for that special bundle of joy.

    Making Delivery Day Feel Easier

Before an expecting mom welcomes her new baby into the world there is quite a few things she can do to prepare for the big day — delivery day! When a woman finds out she is pregnant, her preparations for delivery day begins immediately. Here are a few tips to help you along the way.

The first thing expecting moms need to do is find a doctor with whom they would like to work with during the next 40 weeks. During your pregnancy, you will see your doctor on a regular basis to monitor your health and the health of your unborn child; you’ll most likely have many questions about what is happening to your body and your baby as well, so choose a doctor that you feel very comfortable with seeing often and asking your personal questions to.

Also on the list of important things moms need to do before the baby arrives is to keep herself healthy. Obtaining a list of foods, drinks and medications that are off limits during pregnancy is a great idea for all expectant mothers. The most important thing you can do before delivery day is to make sure you’re eating a well-balanced diet and exercising. Exercising used to be thought of as a cause for miscarriage but is now shown to improve the health and emotional state of expecting mothers.

Before your delivery day, it’s a great idea to speak to your doctor about your pain management options. Even moms that choose to use an epidural to deal with their pain need to figure out if they want to take the epidural immediately or if she wants to use natural pain relief for a portion of her pain management. Natural remedies include walking, water therapy and even breathing techniques.

Preparing for immediately after the baby is born is something that may not be in the forefront of a mother’s mind with the big event of labor looming. After the baby is born, you will need to have picked out pediatrician to work with who will need to come and give the baby a checkup. If you would like your son to be circumcised, this will be a procedure you will need to talk about and plan for before he is born. For any newborn, the blood remaining in the umbilical cord blood after birth can be collected for cord blood banking. This option needs to be planned for ahead of time if it’s something you would like to do for your baby. Cord blood banking provides families with a related source of stem cells that could potentially be used to help treat a future disease. Having these post delivery options planned for ahead of time will allow a mother to just enjoy her new baby without thinking about more decisions to be made.

Whether mom is having her first baby or her fourth, these tips and tricks are sure to help make her pregnancy and labor as easy and possible.

  • The Nursery – before

    The Nursery – before

Shine Your Light Well I forgot to get my after post up of our kitchen last month, and still haven’t even posted it! I promise a full post on the kitchen is coming a litte later this week, with before and after shots! But before it gets too late again, I wanted to show you my Before and after project for the month of February. The Nursery!  That’s right, baby Prince is due in 2 months, so it’s time to get the nursery all set up.  For the last, oh 4 months, the nursery has been used as a store all room. If I didn’t know what to do with something it got tossed in there.

I’ve tossed out a few boxes of garbage already. Gone through many more boxes, and still have some more to do. Amazingly I found a box of checks, so I don’t have to order any more! I knew I had some somewhere.
My biggest problem is that I’ve begun just moving things from one room to another. Since we put Princess R in the same room with her sisters, we had another “empty” room. So most of the items from here, have been moved to another store all room. One day I’ll have the energy and vision to get it all completely organized.
Our plans for the nursery are fairly simple. Although the multi-colored walls did grow on us, we will be painting them all the same color – blue.  We purchases some blue curtains for the windows with a gift card my sisters gave us for Christmas. I got some blue argyle bins to store diapers and other baby items.
One of my favorite traditions, though, is the puzzle. Mark and I pick a puzzle out for each of our kids. We put it together, glue it, and frame it to hang in their room. We are both pretty excited for the baseball puzzle we purchased for this room.  Once the painting it done, we’ll set up a card table in the nursery to get it put together out of the Princesses reach.
We still need to find a dresser, and possibly a changing table. I’ve become pretty adept at changing babies on the floor though, so it’s not really a need. I can’t think of anything else we need, but I’m sure once the room starts coming together I’ll be adding more.
