  • Living Space vs the Toys …. Think About It

Do you ever look around your house, and wonder how you can keep it all clean? You’ve got kids running around everywhere, and find yourself constantly tripping over toys.

Over the weekend, we were at my sister in laws house. She has a set of toys in the main living space dubbed “Upstairs Toys”, but the bulk of the toys is in the basement and are dubbed “downstairs toys”.  Her home always looks so immaculate and inviting. We got to talking about how she keeps the toys separated, and it really helps with the cleaning.

Now in my head I’ve always decided that the toys belong downstairs in our house. It’s where the kids bedrooms and the playroom are. Really the toys don’t need to be anywhere else in the house. Yet they always seem to get scattered up and down, and even outside. I’d really like to have a sit down with the kids and tell them that the toys aren’t allowed upstairs anymore.

However, at the same time, I like that my kids feel comfortable playing in any room. I like that they come play near me while I’m working (even if they do get in my way sometimes).  I love watching their imaginations take off as different household items get incorporated into their toy play. Would I be squalling their creativity if I kept all the toys downstairs? Would I spend less time with my kids if I didn’t let them bring their toys upstairs while I’m cooking?

I guess I’m just having a hard time finding a good balance. I think I need to separate our toys, like my sister in law does. Some can be upstairs, and some can be downstairs, but we don’t mix the two. All I really want is a front room that when people walk into don’t feel bombarded by toys (or other stuff for that matter). I want just one clean room. Is it too much to ask? One room that looks like it could be in a Better Homes and Garden?

    Think About it
Do you have a room in your home, free of toys? How do you separate the living space, from the playing space? I’d love to hear your thoughts!

  • How to Prep Your Home for Sale

How to Prep Your Home for Sale

As we continue our search for a new job, we are also prepping the house for sale. Although we haven’t listed it on the market yet, we want it ready to go up as soon as we know where we’ll be moving. By having the home in top condition before listing it, we should be able to sell it in a short time period, without too much back and forth with a potential buyer.
Also once we move, we will not be able to take care of anything in the home, so it needs to be looking good, in case we have to move before it sells.

So before you list your home for sale, I suggest going through room by room and making a list of anything that needs updated, painted, or repaired.  Mark has gone through the home and made this list for us. It’s going to take a lot of work, but we don’t have much else to do.

    Master Room
    – Clean walls. Possibly repaint
    – Fix the broken blinds

    Bedroom #1
    – Touch up Paint
    – Reattach closet door

    Bedroom #2
    – replace flooring in walk in closet
    – scrub walls. Possibly paint

    Bedroom #3
    – Scrub walls

    Bathroom
    – Touch up paint
    – Fix door jam
    – Fix cupboard door
    Hallway
    – Touch up paint
    Front Room
    – Retrim doorway
    – Repaint
    – fill screw holes

    Kitchen
    – Touch up paint around window and ceiling
    – Spacer between cupboard and wall
    – Ceilling edge above stove
    – Caulk around attic entrance
    – Conceal the back of the cupboard showing
    – Trim around pantry doors
    – Sand, caulk and paint trim

    Family Room
    – Paint trim and ceiling
    – Paint fireplace top piece
    – clean paint off doorknobs

    Stairway
    – fill cracks
    – paint
    – clean doorknob
    – Stain hand rail

After you’ve gone through the inside of your home, take a walk around the outside. List any repairs. Make sure the sprinklers are working, the lawn is trim, and weeds are pulled. As a buyer, the lawn is the first thing we see. Make it look good, but don’t invest too much money into it. I enjoy having a lawn to make my own, rather then redo what the previous owner had done. I would say stick to daily upkeep of the yard, and don’t try and do any large projects unless it really needs it.

  • Where Ever We Go We’ll Make it a Home

Where Ever We Go We’ll Make it a Home

This post has been in the works for a few weeks now. At first I was a little too emotional to talk about it. Then I felt it should wait until Mark’s current (at the time) contract was up. I’m past the emotion, and his contract is up. So here it is…
Mark resigned from teaching band at the local high school. He finished out the school year, but we are now looking for a job elsewhere.
My initial reaction was to look at every school close to where we live. I DID NOT want to move. We just bought our house last year. We have put a ton of work into making it our home. We’ve dealt with flooding, termites and a kitchen remodel. We love the neighborhood. We have some great friends, and the kids love it here too.
When it became clear there weren’t really any jobs nearby, I got myself ready for the idea of moving. I began looking at our home and what needs to be done to sell and not lose money on the home. You can expect many posts in the near future on prepping your home to sell.

You could say that I am actually pretty excited about moving now. Yes I will miss this home, and our community here, but I am ready for another adventure. We’ve applied all over the country, and have had many interviews the past two weeks.  We will continue to apply and interview until a job is offered.
The funnest part for me, is that I don’t have to interview. I just get to send Mark off to do that, while I browse house listings in the area. Since most schools start in August, we will have to be ready to move mid to end July and I want to know the areas and what’s available to us. I’ve been using Zillow’s Ipad App to check out listings. I really love their App (the website could use a little help though). You type in the area you are looking to live, and a map pops up with little houses scattered across it. You can edit the price range, sq footage, bedrooms, etc to get just the listings you’re interested in.

No matter where we end up, we will make it our home.
I’m taking guesses on where we’ll end up. We’ve pretty much applied across the country, so guess away. Will we find something close enough to commute, or will we move across the country?
*Incase you’re wondering this is not a sponsored post. I like Zillow a whole lot, and it just happened to work it’s way into this post 🙂 If you’re looking for a home, I suggest you check it out, but I’m not being compensated for it at all.
  • Making a House a Home: All about the Attitude

Making a House a Home: All about the Attitude

As my blog title states, I’m striving to turn our House into a Home. For me this means, it’s not just a dwelling, a roof over our heads and beds to sleep in (though I have recently taken up residency on the couch, darn pregnancy pains).  A home is a place full of love, laughter, family and friends. A place anyone can feel welcome in as soon as they cross the front doorstep.  To help with this in our front room we have this quote painted on the wall.

Last week as I pulled into the driveway after picking Princess V up from school, she declares “I hate this house. It’s a big mess. We need a bigger house.”  Thank goodness I was already parked, because I was floored by this 5 year old’s statement. I LOVE our house. I DON’T want a bigger house (this one’s plenty big to clean as is!). Why would she say something like that?  After talking it over with Mark we decided it came down to attitude. Was I displaying an attitude of love for our home? Was I showing our home love and teaching the Princesses how to love our home?  I’m guessing not. Actually, I’m not guessing. I wasn’t. Being 8months pregnant and emotionally and physically drained, I just didn’t have it in me to show as much love and caring to our home as I would like. Instead, I realize I showed more frustration and anger with the constant messes that I just couldn’t keep on top of. No wonders she thought she hated our house, she was associating it with the mess, which is exactly what I was exemplifying to her!

On a recent trip to visit Mark at work, I saw a sign he had hung on one of the doors. I really liked it, and decided I needed to incorporate it into my daily thoughts.

    Attitude - Attitude
So how do I turn this around? How do I change my attitude. The messes still frustrate me, especially as it gets harder and harder to bend over to pick things up. How do I teach my kids that we can love our home, by keeping it clean?
First, I have to change my attitude. From now on, if there is a mess, instead of becoming frustrated, thinking I’m the only one who cares (come on, you know you’ve thought it before too), I need to kindly ask for help. I need to pull out that little reservoir of energy to put a smile on my face, and get to work. Then once we have the mess clean, I can show the Princesses the type of fun we can have in a clean home. There is so much we could do, but I never do, because of the messes. We could have so much fun, if only we clean up after ourselves, and all pitch in.
Once we have our home clean, I am feeling the need to make each room enjoyable for everyone. There should be some element in each of the rooms that will make it home for us all. Here’s some ideas I’ve put together, and begun to incorporate into our home.
Front Room – I’ve added an art wall. Although our front room is mostly used for visiting with friends. It’s a place I always strive to keep clean and free of toys. But it also seems to be where we spend the most family time. Having an art wall to display the Princesses work has been both fun and enjoyable for all of us.  For some, the front room could be your family room, your game room. Whatever room you spend the most time in. Try to keep it simple, with elements for each member of the family. By doing this it can bring the family closer together while still giving that individuality.
Kitchen – Our kitchen is very small, and is more like a hallway. Really, to get to the rest of the house you have to walk through the kitchen first.  To change the attitude in our kitchen I’m planning on involving the Princesses in cooking each day. Besides getting some more time with them, it will also teach them life skills, and responsibility. For the smaller one, I have our tupperware drawer available for her to play in. The older girls love playing in it too, and they have many pretend parties with tupperware strewn across the floor. Allowing them this space lets them feel apart of the kitchen happenings.
Dining Room – Now that it’s remodeled, we all love our Dining Room more! We went for a Venetian theme with the color and decor. After Princess V’s declaration though, I wanted to make it more child friendly as well. So the play kitchen came out of the toy room, and into the Dining Room. I haven’t seen them play so much with their kitchen in forever! Just today after lunch they sat around it getting “drinks and ice” from the little fridge.  While they did that, I was able to clean up lunch. What a joy this brought into our home, as the 3 girls played nicely together without any fights or tantrums.

Play Room – If you have a place specifically for toys, that is great! After our flood last fall we were able to remodel and make that space. Don’t forget to add elements for the adults in this room. Yes the room is built for the kids, but you want to be able to get down and play with your kids. When we first made the room, there was no seating in it. I realized soon that I needed something down there so I could be with the kids, but still be an adult as well. So down went our little IKEA couch. The problem we have with this room now, is keeping it picked up. It seems like an impossible chore, but it isn’t. My first idea, is to create some game art. My kids love their board games, but don’t know how to play by the rules yet. This causes pieces of different games to be left spread around the room. I saw this brilliant idea on Pinterest, and plan on adding it to our play room. It keep it fun for the kids, and clean for the adults.
Once we have the rooms set up, as the adult I need to set clear rules and boundaries. For some it may be “Food stays in the kitchen”, or “Shoes stay by the door”.  Decide what’s most important to you in your home, and what is possible for your life situation. For us, we mainly keep food in the kitchen, but we often enjoy a fun “picnic” in the front room. It breaks the same old, and keeps the Princesses entertained. I do prefer no food downstairs though. I just haven’t made that a clear rule; one with consequences for being broken. Once you have your rules decided on, if you have kids, talk about consequences and rewards for obeying. We do a Daddy Dollar and Mommy Market system that our kids love! They’ll do just about anything to get a Daddy Dollar, and they know we mean business if one is taken away. At the end of each week they get to shop the Mommy Market.
Now this whole post started because of what Princess V declared. So I’d like to end with another of her declarations, a few days after the first
“Mom, I love this house. I love the seat here, with my blanket and pillow and watching Avatar”.
Let me give you a little bit of a view into what it was exactly that she loved.
Amazing what a little change in attitude can do.

  • Asbestos testing

    Asbestos testing

We just had a very exciting and crazy 2 days! Our insurance adjuster came by last night to check out the flood damage. We showed her where the pipe broke, the replaced carpet, the torn up vinyl, the knocked down wall, and the insulation that might have asbestos.
Asbestos? You heard that right. Apparently you can put some asbestos in front of a blow torch and it won’t get through. Pretty cool! Not so cool if that stuff gets in your lungs though.  The adjuster was very friendly and got right on top of everything. Since there was a possibility of asbestos she sent us to a hotel, and dinner.  We packed up some things for overnight, and headed out. The Princess’ had a lot of fun “going on vacation”.
    Waiting to check in.

    more waiting.

Not sure why it got blurry, but we’re still waiting.

Once we got a room Princess R thought the drawers were the coolest place ever! I debated having her sleep in one! Of course I didn’t let her, the hotel had a decent pack n play we used.

Mmm, breakfast! I just love those faces, lol. It was really a great breakfast! Fruit loops, muffins and juice for the kids. Bagel with cream cheese, and a strawberry danish for me. I should learn how to make danish’s they are morning goodness!
This morning I woke up after Mark had left for work. I was a little upset because I like to be up when he leaves, and I couldn’t find our bag with my clothes in it. I thought he took it with him.  After some accusations on my part, I found the bag in the bathroom, whoops. My apologies were accepted with laughter and a comment that he knows how to make me crazy.
In truth, I was getting close to some kind of panic attack. My phone was dead because I left the charger at home, and I didn’t really know what I was supposed to do today. I felt out of the loop, and slightly abandoned. I packed the kids up and drove home to get my charger, and of course grabbed the wrong charger, grrr! So I gave them a bit more down time before we packed up again, and got the right charger. We then went to the mall and Target to get some lunch and new coloring books and crayons. That kept them well entertained until my phone was charged.
Mark called after lunch to let me know we DID NOT have asbestos! Thank goodness, but now what? Since the hotel was paid for for a week, I left our things there and headed home so Princess R could actually take a nap (it just wasn’t working out in the hotel). We’ve now met with a contracted Restoration company and feel like we’re on the path to home living again. I feel like our basement is more a house then a home right now. Tools everywhere, with no place to really comfortably live. By next week we should know the costs to us, and what the insurance is covering. Then it’s off to construction and a nice finished basement! I can’t wait.
  • First Aid Kit

    First Aid Kit

One thing every home needs is a first aid kit. How many times have you gone to grab a bandaid, only to find you used the last one, or you’re out of antibiotic creams?  I know it’s happened to me quite a bit. I suggest going through your first aid kit about once a month, and adding any items running low, or missing, to your shopping list. You don’t want to be stuck in an emergency situation and find yourself unprepared.

    Home First Aid Kit

Now where do you start when putting together a first aid kit? To get you started here is what I keep in ours:

    • – bandaids, different sizes
    • – gauze
    • – gauze tape
    • -antibiotic cream
    • – vaseline
    • – anti-itch cream
    • thermometer
    • – tweezers (I still need to buy some new ones)
    • – small scissors
    • – cotton balls or swabs
    • – hand sanitizer
    • any medications your family takes

The last one is where your First Aid kit will differ from others. We don’t have any regular meds to take, but I do like to keep ibuprofen and infants and children’s Pain Reliever in ours.

Once you have all the items for your kit, you’ll want something to put it all in. I love my carrying case. It’s pretty similar to one my mom kept in our cupboard growing up – but until I found one for our family, I didn’t realize it’s meant to be a makeup box. That explains the mirror. Everything fits so nicely in it though!

What’s in YOUR First Aid Kit? Leave me a comment letting me know what I might be missing!
  • Trapped bird

    Trapped bird

What do you do when your house starts making strange noises? I was convinced we had burglar in our back yard this morning! I even got up the bravery to go check it out. After the noises continued through out the day I came to the conclusion they were coming from the wood burning stove.

Yep there was an animal in there alright! Before Mark got home, I bravely opened the doors to it, fully expecting to be mauled by an angry raccoon (I don’t even know if they live around here, lol). Thankfully for me nothing came out. So I left it for Mark, and then completely forgot to tell him when he got home, until he asked me if I knew there was an animal in the stove. I told him, that yes actually I did know, and it had been there all day.  So he got to work, and finally got that poor raccoon bird out.
Once he managed to get it out of the pipe, the bird decided to lodge itself behind this back piece of metal. It just couldn’t find it’s way out. Granted it had been there for a good 12 hours almost, I’d probably be disoriented too. Unfortunately I did not get a picture of the birds flight out the open back door, but if I had, you’d have only seen a blur. It’s stories like these that start making our house more like a home.
    Fly home birdie, fly home!

While searching for some preschool curriculum, we found this wonderful poster! Now the Princess’ know the house rules and can understand what we mean when we say these phrases.

  • Downside of Being a Homeowner

    Downside of Being a Homeowner

I love being a homeowner! The mere fact that this house is OURS, just rocks! There are times though, that I do actually miss renting.  Times like this last week particularly.
I would like to apologize to you, my wonderful readers. I have not been on here lately.  Life decided it was time for our first Homeowners curve-ball. You may recall my letter to my oven.  It had died on us, and I was very sad.  Before leaving on our Yellowstone Vacation, we bought a new one, and had it scheduled to be delivered and installed the Monday after we got back (this last Monday).  So Monday rolls around, and we start getting ready for the men to deliver our oven. First though we had to run a gas line to our kitchen. See, Mark and I, we like gas ovens. The beauty of them, is you can still cook on them if you’re power goes out. Not that I foresee that happening a lot, but I like to be prepared.  So we bought a gas oven at Lowe’s.  While the plumber was here  running the gas line, he informed us that the insulation from our Cold Storage Room, probably had asbestos in it. He obviously didn’t test for it, but he strongly suggested getting it out sooner than later. Great, I thought! I went into research mode on the insulation, and scared myself a bit. Then the oven arrived!

    Isn’t it beautiful? 5 ranges! Count them…5!!
While this beauty was being installed, we took the Princess’ outside to wash the cars and play in the wading pool.  We had not used our front hose faucet until Monday. The water pressure was really weak through the hose, so we ran it longer than we normally would have.  Once we had the oven installed, and the cars washed, I asked Mark if he would get started on cleaning up the vermiculite. A few minutes later he was back upstairs telling me I needed to come look.  The floor was flooded. We thought it was just a backed up drain. We were wrong. The basement was flooded from the hose faucet.

It started in the master closet

and seeped into the cold storage.
We tried to save the carpet in the closet, and master room, but we couldn’t. We couldn’t get anyone from our insurance to look at it until Thursday. At that point, the smell told us it wasn’t worth saving. So for the past couple days we’ve ripped out all the carpet, and have been sleeping on our pullout couch.

     We carpet pad

Turns out vinyl was laid under the carpet in the master room.
    See how wet that is?!
    Pulling out the carpet pads
    The master closet without carpet.
Our current bed, in it’s couch form. And since we aren’t sleeping downstairs at the moment, I didn’t want Princess R down there all alone. So we put her in the pack n play in Princess C’s room, and I turned Princess R’s room into the laundry room.
    Sit Relax and Read
Make sure to join me at Sentimental Sundays over on Sit Relax and Read.
This week I’m feeling sentimental about renting. Although owning a home is our dream come true, there were some obvious benefits to renting. I will always look back fondly on the repairmen we didn’t have to pay, or the heartache of dying appliances.  Welcome to home ownership!

  • Home Buying Tips

I love that Social Mom’s Writing Prompt today was Home Buying Tips!  I’d love to share a bit more of our journey in purchasing our first home.  The struggles we had to go through, and the walls we hit.  If you are new to the blog, let me start by saying, we just bought our first home last week!!!  It’s been such a fun, exhausting, and sometimes exasperating experience.
    Where do you start?
For us, we started looking at homes when we were first married.  We’d periodically get the idea in our head to buy a home, look at some, and then decide we should wait.  We’ve been married almost 6 years now, so it’s been a long time coming.  We also watched HGTV’s home buying shows on a very regular basis.  By the time we were truly ready to buy, we knew exactly what we liked and didn’t like, what we wanted and what we could do without.
    The Realtor
Finding a good realtor is very important and can really make the difference in finding the home for you.  When we started out, we didn’t shop for a realtor. We called one, she showed us a house, and we just stuck with her.  I didn’t like her, I just didn’t feel comfortable around her, and it made for some unpleasant house hunting on my part.  We had already signed a contract with her though, so we had to use her.  However, once her contract was up, we started calling other realtors.  We found one we both liked, and it was amazing! We had looked for 6 months (6 months!!!) with the other realtor.  In one day with the new realtor we had found a home we both liked (it’s seriously my dream home!), and had an offer in on day 2 with him.  It was such a great house that there were a couple offers on it, but by Friday we were in the #1 spot.
    Deadlines
Make sure you meet all deadlines.  Buying house involves a lot more than I had realized.  I didn’t know about inspections, lead base paint tests, and appraisals.  I really thought you just showed your loan approval and got a yes or no.  If you don’t meet deadlines, you risk losing your house to another buyer.  That is exactly what happened with the house we got.  They had a previous buyer, but deadlines were not being met, so the sellers put their home back on the market, and we got it.  I feel a little bad for the other people, but not too bad, since the home is now mine 🙂
    Mortgage Company
Shop around.  We didn’t at first.  We were going with a lady who our first realtor had recommended.  She was nice, we were going to use her, but we didn’t.  First off, the sellers preferred we use a company our current realtor worked with.  So that pretty much made up our mind.  But before going with them, we checked out a couple more companies.  The hubby is a teacher and one company was offering a $200 gift card to teachers who used them.  It was tempting, and we almost went with them.  Then we looked at the company our realtor uses.  Not only did she save us $50/month then the other company, she also said she’d give us the $200 the other company was offering.  SCORE!  Thanks to her kindness we were able to purchase a refrigerator without adding more debt onto our budget
    “Shopping” with Kids
We took our kids to every house we looked at. We have three kids, 4, 3 and almost 1.  Was it a hassle, yes. Were there times we wanted to leave the kids, yes.  So why did we keep taking them with us? The home isn’t just for the hubby and I.  It’s for our kids. A place for them to grow in love and safety.  We wanted them to like it just as much as we did.  Our 3yo loved every house.  The 4yo though, she had some fun comments “I want this one”, “this room is mine!” And my favorite in response to me asking if she liked this house “uh, yeah!”.  Really child, you’re only 4, no need for attitude yet.  If you can, I strongly suggest bringing the kids with you.  Let them have a say in where you live.  Just be respectful of homes that still have people living in them.  For those homes, we usually went in one at a time, while the other parent sat with the kids.
Last but not least – Have fun!  Enjoy the time, don’t settle for something you don’t like, just to get into a home. You don’t have to buy at the top of your budget, there are lots of decent homes you can get cheaper and save yourself some money.
