    Spring Cleaning Challenge {Giveaway}

It’s that time of year – birds singing, flowers blooming, snow melting (hopefully), and sun shining!

The time of year we dust out our homes and open up the windows for some fresh, non-freezing air.

I love this time of year. Spring is easily my favorite season (autumn is a close second).  You may call me odd for this next tidbit I’m going to tell you, but here goes – I love spring cleaning. I truly do. In fact I have some very fond memories of spring cleaning as a kid. My mom always made it fun. I hope I can do the same with my kids.

What are the benefits of Spring Cleaning?

Well first of all, after being cooped up in the house all winter, spring cleaning allows you to bring the sunshine and joy back inside. Spring cleaning gives you the opportunity to deep clean on a level you normally wouldn’t, which really can be rewarding at the end.

If you’re a normal family, you’ve probably been dealing with a lot of sicknesses that seem to accompany winter – colds and flu specifically. With the end of winter, you don’t want to carry those germs into the rest of the year, so spring cleaning helps get them out!

For me, and maybe some others, the satisfaction of a good deep down cleaning, is enough of a mental boost to have something so seemingly daunting be accomplished. As mothers it seems most of our chores are never truly done. Spring cleaning can be! (perhaps this is why I enjoy shoveling snow).

I put together a fun little printable Checklist for you. Print it off, hang it up, and get to work!

Each ladybug represent a new day of cleaning. I do not suggest trying to spring clean all in one day – there’s just too much to do it efficiently.   The idea of spring cleaning, is to get down in the places you don’t normally clean (think – behind the refrigerator), to de-clutter and get rid of un-needed items, and to deep clean areas that usually only receive a surface cleaning.

Every day this week I’ll share a list specific to that day’s cleaning. Before we jump into it though – pick a reward. Right now, decide, what are you working towards? Or perhaps, what are your kids going to work for?  That’s how my mom always did it at least. We got to pick a special treat, if we really worked hard with her all week long. It was a great motivator.

  • Choosing the Right Lighting

    Choosing the Right Lighting

The end is near!  We finally closed on our house just before Christmas. It has made moving a bit of a nightmare, but the house is ours, and it is time to turn it into a home.

Today I want to talk a little about lighting. Finding the right lights, creating the right mood with lights, and not over lighting or under lighting any area of your home. See I have a problem. Our new Front Room is very much under lighted. I’ve been browsing some of the Kartell lighting over at LBC Modern.

    Under Lighting

Here is a snapshot of our front room (ignore Christmas…)

It’s a fairly small room, and the only lighting is that old antique light hanging from the corner – which by the way, doesn’t work. So now our only light in this room is the big picture window facing north. I mention that because the north side of the home gets the cold, and not as much sun. Leaving our lighting pretty dim here.
I want this room to be welcoming, which means it needs the right lights.  I’m thinking a bourgie table lamp next to a small couch would look pretty nice.

    Kartell "Bourgie" Table Lamp

Above the shelf I would like to add some recessed can lighting as well, to spotlight any decorating I do or pictures we may hang there.
These small lighting additions would bring this room up to the perfect lighting atmosphere to be welcoming, but not overly lit or gaudy.

    Over Lighting

Our new kitchen has had the opposite effect with over lighting. The kitchen is a small little space in this home (yes another remodel is on the horizon!). My current issue, however, is the overabundance of lights, and the separate switch for each one. I think I counted 3 or 4 different switches in the kitchen, and each one only turned on one single light. It’s enough to spin me in circles trying to get the right light on. There is a dining area light, an above the sink light, and a laundry light. With the way it is set up right now, the laundry light is needed. It could easily be changed, though, to have one longer light in the kitchen that would give light into the laundry side of the room and extend to the dining area. This would especially work as the dining side could use the light from the south facing window it sits next to. Again, south side of the house, you’ll be getting more sun, and therefore, don’t need as much lighting.

Use Lights to Set the Mood

Lighting truly affects our moods. The more light, especially natural light from the sun, the happier we are. I strive for joy and happiness in our home, something I think we all probably do. So I love tossing open the curtains and blinds and letting in the sun. There are some areas of a home though, that don’t get the natural lighting. Areas such as a basement. They tend to be dark. By finding the right lights, you can create a joyful area in the basement, despite its lack of sun. I would go with bright lights and soft shades for a table lamp. If the ceilings are tall enough in your basement, hanging overhead lights can give off more light than those closer to the ceiling.

If you’re creating a space for kids, though, you may want to try different colored lights. They can spark creativity and a joyful mood for your children. I personally love these Pablo Tube Lights I found. Not only would my kids love the colors, but they are also dimmable lights, so I can adjust them to just the right amount of light we need.

Well, I’m off to pack some more boxes, and daydream of the future remodels in our new home. I can’t wait to show you pictures of what we do!

  • Piano {Wordless Wednesday}

    Piano {Wordless Wednesday}

One thing I really miss having is a piano. While visiting my parents for Thanksgiving, I got to enjoy Mark’s music as he played almost daily on their beautiful piano.  As soon as we close on this house, and move in, I think our next big home purchase will be a piano. My fingers are itching to play again.

Music truly makes a House more of a Home.
  • We found a House

When we decided it was time for a change, and made the decision to sell our home of 1 year, it was hard. For me, it was extremely emotional. We had spent 6 years moving around, renting where we could find the cheapest prices, and we had finally decided to settle our family down, in a home of our own, where we could paint the walls however we wanted.

Packing up and moving a year later was not in the plans. Not even the slightest thought of that. But we did it. It happened. After being home owners, though, going back to renting has been extremely difficult. I am grateful, mind you that our landlord rented his house to us on such short notice, so we could move as a family. I’m grateful for a roof over our heads, that keeps us (mostly) warm at night.  I am grateful for a kitchen, with a stove and fridge to prepare yummy meals for my family.

I am most grateful however, for my husband. That together we knew we wanted to find a home for us again. One that fit our lifestyle, and our kids. One that we could change from just a house, to a home.

And after much searching, we finally found it. I was hoping to show you pictures this week of us moving into it. But it’s taking a little longer to close than we had hoped. That is not going to get me down though! It means instead of moving over our holiday break, we get to relax and enjoy family time.

However, I do want to show you some pics of our almost new home.

Sorry it’s not the greatest picture. It is pretty amazing though! I can’t wait to show you more pictures once we’ve moved in…hopefully before Christmas.
  • Is this home? A Theme Song for the blog

Have I told you all about this house we’re living in?
    No?
Well, I think I may have purposefully been avoiding it.
See, when we first looked at this home, we loved it. It has a great layout, and lots of land.
The problem was we looked at the home while it was still packed with a lifetime of stuff, that had been shut up in rooms untouched for years.
When we moved in, we saw many many more problems than we expected.

    1. The foundation. It’s almost certain it is falling. I have a nice hill in the kitchen, and the front room slopes eastward.
    2. Walls. There are holes in the walls, from the old pot belly stoves, that were never closed up.
Which brings us to the soot that covers every wall, from the pot belly stoves. Add to that the coal mine just a mile down the road, and we’ve got some black walls.
    3. The bathroom. Where do I start? From the toilet that grows mold daily, or the leaky bathtub with wood rot?
    4. You are so lucky this blog can’t send smells to you! Not that I would want to send this to you, but I’m pretty sure there’s something dead somewhere in this house. We just haven’t found it yet.

We have a Beauty and the Beast Broadway music CD, and it’s often one we listen to with the kids. Shortly after our move, we had the CD playing and Belle’s song “Home” came on. Wow. I thought she must be singing about me! I laugh now, but that first week, I very much wanted to cry listening to this song. I think it has a great message though, for anyone going through a hard time, moving away from where they consider Home is.
Remember,  Home is where your Heart is. You can make where ever you live Home, especially when you put your Heart into it.

With that, enjoy “Home” sung by Susan Egan (Belle on Broadway)

  • Ec-o-nom-ics by Kersten L. Kelly {Book Review}

    Ec-o-nom-ics:
    A simple twist on normalcy
    By Kersten L. Kelly

About the Book: Professional football players, corporate tobacco advertisers, volatile gasoline prices, and the Cold War all share an undetected commonality each is an intrinsic part of economics. Though not obvious to the naked eye, each entity shares a pattern with the others. This book helps to shed light on these mutual characteristics. It is an extensive compilation of theories interpreted using supportive examples. Economics is an enthralling science that encompasses our actions, thoughts, and emotional rationality every day in the unconscious. This book dissects economic theory into bite-size, entertaining snippets that anyone can understand and apply to their routines. It is a compelling depiction of history, pop culture, and social movements intertwined with relevant economic trends. Economics is part of daily life, and this book challenges readers to question how and why people make decisions by adding a simple twist on normalcy.

    About the Author:

Kersten L. Kelly is a self-published author of narrative non-fiction and semi-fiction books. She grew up in Munster, Indiana, and currently works in a sales role based out of Chicago, Illinois. She started writing at an early age and graduated from Indiana University with a dual Bachelor’s Degree in Economics and Communication & Culture. She then went on to earn a Master’s in Business Administration from the Kelley School of Business at Indiana University. She has a passion for learning, teaching, and writing as well as international travel in her spare time. This book is her first piece of published work.

    My Thoughts:
This is a book worth reading. Although at first I couldn’t relate very well to the examples (football games and cigarette marketing), eventually there were some situations discussed I could relate to. That’s what ec-o-nom-ics is all about. Setting out real life examples to help everyone understand the theory of economics.
I think at this time in our country it is very important for us all to understand how the economy works. We’re always hearing how the economy is bad, but how many of us truly understand what that means, and how we can make it better?  Kersten helped me see the theory of economics in my daily life.  I remember taking economics in college, and having everyone tell me good luck; as if economics was the class of everyone dreaded taking, but had to, because they didn’t understand it. I went in to that class worried it would be tough. It turned out to be one of my more enjoyable classes, because I actually understood it. Sadly, after that class I didn’t continue to pursue learning about economics. I was really glad to be able to read Ec-o-nom-ics.
I really enjoyed the last chapter “Why Does Comparing 3 Goods Change Perspective?”.  Just after reading this chapter, Mark and I drove down to find a house near his new job (yay, he got a job!).  While Mark was in the area interviewing, he found a house he fell in love with. So of course I had to check it out, and I wanted some perspective with other homes in the area. We got a realtor to show us some homes within our parameters.  We saw 2 that “fit us”. After this realtor took us around (who by the way looked and sounded just like Don Knots!!), Mark took me out to the home he had found. It was a sold by owner home.  Here is a little set up I did, with comparisons similar to what Kersten shows in her book.

      House 1 House 2 House 3
    sq feet 4000 + 2000+ 2000+
    Price 115000 120000 120000
Parking On Street 1 car garage 3 car garage

We went with house 3. Why? Well the parking was a big deal. House 1 had absolutely no where to park. So even though the square footage was amazing for the price, we really needed a place to park. House 2 had some parking, but for the same amount we were able to get triple the parking!

  • How to Prep Your Home for Sale

How to Prep Your Home for Sale

As we continue our search for a new job, we are also prepping the house for sale. Although we haven’t listed it on the market yet, we want it ready to go up as soon as we know where we’ll be moving. By having the home in top condition before listing it, we should be able to sell it in a short time period, without too much back and forth with a potential buyer.
Also once we move, we will not be able to take care of anything in the home, so it needs to be looking good, in case we have to move before it sells.

So before you list your home for sale, I suggest going through room by room and making a list of anything that needs updated, painted, or repaired.  Mark has gone through the home and made this list for us. It’s going to take a lot of work, but we don’t have much else to do.

    Master Room
    – Clean walls. Possibly repaint
    – Fix the broken blinds

    Bedroom #1
    – Touch up Paint
    – Reattach closet door

    Bedroom #2
    – replace flooring in walk in closet
    – scrub walls. Possibly paint

    Bedroom #3
    – Scrub walls

    Bathroom
    – Touch up paint
    – Fix door jam
    – Fix cupboard door
    Hallway
    – Touch up paint
    Front Room
    – Retrim doorway
    – Repaint
    – fill screw holes

    Kitchen
    – Touch up paint around window and ceiling
    – Spacer between cupboard and wall
    – Ceilling edge above stove
    – Caulk around attic entrance
    – Conceal the back of the cupboard showing
    – Trim around pantry doors
    – Sand, caulk and paint trim

    Family Room
    – Paint trim and ceiling
    – Paint fireplace top piece
    – clean paint off doorknobs

    Stairway
    – fill cracks
    – paint
    – clean doorknob
    – Stain hand rail

After you’ve gone through the inside of your home, take a walk around the outside. List any repairs. Make sure the sprinklers are working, the lawn is trim, and weeds are pulled. As a buyer, the lawn is the first thing we see. Make it look good, but don’t invest too much money into it. I enjoy having a lawn to make my own, rather then redo what the previous owner had done. I would say stick to daily upkeep of the yard, and don’t try and do any large projects unless it really needs it.

  • Making a House a Home: All about the Attitude

Making a House a Home: All about the Attitude

As my blog title states, I’m striving to turn our House into a Home. For me this means, it’s not just a dwelling, a roof over our heads and beds to sleep in (though I have recently taken up residency on the couch, darn pregnancy pains).  A home is a place full of love, laughter, family and friends. A place anyone can feel welcome in as soon as they cross the front doorstep.  To help with this in our front room we have this quote painted on the wall.

Last week as I pulled into the driveway after picking Princess V up from school, she declares “I hate this house. It’s a big mess. We need a bigger house.”  Thank goodness I was already parked, because I was floored by this 5 year old’s statement. I LOVE our house. I DON’T want a bigger house (this one’s plenty big to clean as is!). Why would she say something like that?  After talking it over with Mark we decided it came down to attitude. Was I displaying an attitude of love for our home? Was I showing our home love and teaching the Princesses how to love our home?  I’m guessing not. Actually, I’m not guessing. I wasn’t. Being 8months pregnant and emotionally and physically drained, I just didn’t have it in me to show as much love and caring to our home as I would like. Instead, I realize I showed more frustration and anger with the constant messes that I just couldn’t keep on top of. No wonders she thought she hated our house, she was associating it with the mess, which is exactly what I was exemplifying to her!

On a recent trip to visit Mark at work, I saw a sign he had hung on one of the doors. I really liked it, and decided I needed to incorporate it into my daily thoughts.

    Attitude - Attitude
So how do I turn this around? How do I change my attitude. The messes still frustrate me, especially as it gets harder and harder to bend over to pick things up. How do I teach my kids that we can love our home, by keeping it clean?
First, I have to change my attitude. From now on, if there is a mess, instead of becoming frustrated, thinking I’m the only one who cares (come on, you know you’ve thought it before too), I need to kindly ask for help. I need to pull out that little reservoir of energy to put a smile on my face, and get to work. Then once we have the mess clean, I can show the Princesses the type of fun we can have in a clean home. There is so much we could do, but I never do, because of the messes. We could have so much fun, if only we clean up after ourselves, and all pitch in.
Once we have our home clean, I am feeling the need to make each room enjoyable for everyone. There should be some element in each of the rooms that will make it home for us all. Here’s some ideas I’ve put together, and begun to incorporate into our home.
Front Room – I’ve added an art wall. Although our front room is mostly used for visiting with friends. It’s a place I always strive to keep clean and free of toys. But it also seems to be where we spend the most family time. Having an art wall to display the Princesses work has been both fun and enjoyable for all of us.  For some, the front room could be your family room, your game room. Whatever room you spend the most time in. Try to keep it simple, with elements for each member of the family. By doing this it can bring the family closer together while still giving that individuality.
Kitchen – Our kitchen is very small, and is more like a hallway. Really, to get to the rest of the house you have to walk through the kitchen first.  To change the attitude in our kitchen I’m planning on involving the Princesses in cooking each day. Besides getting some more time with them, it will also teach them life skills, and responsibility. For the smaller one, I have our tupperware drawer available for her to play in. The older girls love playing in it too, and they have many pretend parties with tupperware strewn across the floor. Allowing them this space lets them feel apart of the kitchen happenings.
Dining Room – Now that it’s remodeled, we all love our Dining Room more! We went for a Venetian theme with the color and decor. After Princess V’s declaration though, I wanted to make it more child friendly as well. So the play kitchen came out of the toy room, and into the Dining Room. I haven’t seen them play so much with their kitchen in forever! Just today after lunch they sat around it getting “drinks and ice” from the little fridge.  While they did that, I was able to clean up lunch. What a joy this brought into our home, as the 3 girls played nicely together without any fights or tantrums.

Play Room – If you have a place specifically for toys, that is great! After our flood last fall we were able to remodel and make that space. Don’t forget to add elements for the adults in this room. Yes the room is built for the kids, but you want to be able to get down and play with your kids. When we first made the room, there was no seating in it. I realized soon that I needed something down there so I could be with the kids, but still be an adult as well. So down went our little IKEA couch. The problem we have with this room now, is keeping it picked up. It seems like an impossible chore, but it isn’t. My first idea, is to create some game art. My kids love their board games, but don’t know how to play by the rules yet. This causes pieces of different games to be left spread around the room. I saw this brilliant idea on Pinterest, and plan on adding it to our play room. It keep it fun for the kids, and clean for the adults.
Once we have the rooms set up, as the adult I need to set clear rules and boundaries. For some it may be “Food stays in the kitchen”, or “Shoes stay by the door”.  Decide what’s most important to you in your home, and what is possible for your life situation. For us, we mainly keep food in the kitchen, but we often enjoy a fun “picnic” in the front room. It breaks the same old, and keeps the Princesses entertained. I do prefer no food downstairs though. I just haven’t made that a clear rule; one with consequences for being broken. Once you have your rules decided on, if you have kids, talk about consequences and rewards for obeying. We do a Daddy Dollar and Mommy Market system that our kids love! They’ll do just about anything to get a Daddy Dollar, and they know we mean business if one is taken away. At the end of each week they get to shop the Mommy Market.
Now this whole post started because of what Princess V declared. So I’d like to end with another of her declarations, a few days after the first
“Mom, I love this house. I love the seat here, with my blanket and pillow and watching Avatar”.
Let me give you a little bit of a view into what it was exactly that she loved.
Amazing what a little change in attitude can do.

  • We’re Moving!!!

    We’re Moving!!!

I really had doubts that this would ever happen!  But it is!  We are moving into our first official home this week!  We’ve got lots to do, and not a lot of time, but I believe it will all go smoothly.  Here’s my checklist –
Tuesday – sign papers, officially close
Wednesday – get keys between 3-5pm.  Start moving the storage unit. 7pm Dad’s coming to help move large items from the storage unit.
Thursday – Finish off storage unit (really, why pay another month if we don’t have to?)
Friday – Start painting the kids rooms.  We’ll paint the rest of the house as we live there and figure out our style
Saturday – Finish painting, start removing mice infested shelving in cold storage room
First full week in April is Spring Break (Mark is a school teacher, so yay!). We will move the rest of our stuff, and spend time unpacking and enjoying the new home.  I’ll get out in the garden that week if the weather is nice, and see what kind of good stuff is growing, and what I want to plant.  I’m open to suggestions for a first time gardener!

Here’s a teaser of what will be Princess V’s room

Way too much color for me.  It will probably end up all pink, or all purple. We’re letting Princess V choose.

And just a reminder, Friday is April 1st.  That means our Big Moving Event will be kicking off.  We’ve got at least 5 giveaways (may end up with 1 or 2 more).  So make sure you come back for your chance to win!
