    Simplifying Birthday Parties {Think About It}

My kids are obsessed with birthdays. It’s probably a topic discussed at least once a day in our house. I’m not entirely sure why the fixation on this topic. I would love to say it’s because of how we celebrate.  After I posted about my daughters Jake and The Neverland Pirates party, I had a bloggy friend comment that she loved how simple we made birthdays, and didn’t go overboard.

So of course, her comment, doubled with my kids talking daily about who they’re inviting and what the cake should look like for birthdays months in advance, it got me thinking. And you all know how I love to think!

    Think About It!

You don’t need to go into debt to celebrate a birthday. You don’t need to have food for an army (unless you invited an army).  You don’t even need to pay big bucks for a location.  Your kid will have more fun, remember the special day longer, and most importantly feel loved on their special day if you keep it simple.

Money.  You really truly do not need to go into debt for your kids birthdays.  I will admit here, with our first child’s first birthday, we went WAY overboard. Looking back, I think boy we could have spent our money wiser with her. She won’t remember it at all.  As your child gets older, they won’t know how much you spent, unless you make it into a big deal as some sort of manipulation. So save some money. Keep the decorations to a minimum, or home make them. Bake the cake from scratch, or pick up a premade from a bakery.
    Think About It!
Unless you’re a terrible cook, a homemade cake is made with love, and can even get the child involved spending time with mom. Take my son’s cake we made this last weekend. It was so simple, and extremely cheap. We spent a couple dollars on one of those new Duncan Hines flavor creations (caramel) because we were in a time crunch and my homemade frosting was an EPIC fail! Another dollar for the Happy Birthday decorations, and voila – simple easy cake! (In case you were wondering the theme it was for our son Lincoln’s first – hence the penny for 1 President Lincoln). We used a salad serving spoon to create the bumpy penny edge. Nothing fancy, tools we already had on hand, and cheap cheap cheap!

Presents. Who has ever bought their child an expensive toy only to have it break a week later, or be forgotten about in place of a cardboard box?  I’m not saying give your child a cardboard box (though I know mine would love that!), but really think about the presents worth before shelling out all your money.  I also suggest, that if you invite friends and family to the birthday party, you let them know a gift is not expected – just their presence.
    Think About It!
I don’t like my friends feeling like we just want a present out of them. All we really want is to spend time making memories while celebrating their life. Presents are fun and nice, and I’m sure the kids really love them, but is it what they remember?  There are very very few presents I was given that I still remember.  I do remember the memories from the day though. Having my BFF over to play just because it was my birthday.  Having all my friends and their mothers over for a mother daughter night because I turned into a young women and was no longer a little girl.

Food.  Have you ever had leftovers because you weren’t sure how much dinner your family would eat?  Have you ever had leftovers from a party because you made too much salad, bought too many hot dogs, or filled your freezer with ice cream?
    Think About It!
Food at a birthday party should be the simplest part. If you plan a party around lunch or dinner, you’ll want to have enough, but don’t go overboard. Finger foods like a veggie/fruit tray and sandwiches are perfect for small children’s birthdays. Just do your friends a favor and find out if there are any allergies. You’d hate to only have PB&J’s for a kid with a peanut allergy.  Another of our favorite birthday foods is a $5 pizza from Little Caesers, and a bag of salad.

Games.  Make and create your own games!  I remember my parents throwing me a Carnival party for my 8th birthday. It was the most friends I had ever had over at one time. My dad painted a bean bag toss on a piece of cardboard. We had a “fishing pond” made from sheets.  And then a bucket full of water balloons and squirt guns. Simple, easy and cheap. It was by far the best birthday I ever remember, that probably cost my parents next to nothing to put together.
When we celebrated Princess C’s birthday, Mark put together a treasure hunt. Using a paint program on the computer he mapped out our yard, and placed X’s where all the clues were. We didn’t need a fancy one time expensive Disney themed map, when we could make our own. You don’t either!

    Think About It!

Traditions. Finally my favorite way to simplify and truly celebrate our children’s birthdays are by carrying on traditions. Things like singing the Happy Birthday song are fun, and do make it special – but have you ever changed it up some?  You know like they do at restaurants?  I recall many birthdays laughing as my dad sang us this version

Oh Happy Birthday. Oh Happy Birthday. There is Sadness in the Air, People Dying Everywhere, but Happy Birthday. Oh Happy Birthday.

Albeit maybe a little morbid, and depressing.  I don’t currently sing this song to my kids, but I still have fond memories of my dad singing and everyone joining in.

Another family tradition, that I know Mark just loves, and I have carried on to my kids is one where we all get to whack the birthday person on the head after singing this catchy tune

Heavy Heavy Hangover, thy poor head. What I wish for you is a Bump on the head.  – Followed with a nice Bump on the head with their present. This is then repeated with each successive present.

Finally, my last and most treasured tradition is our Birthday Dinner. For our birthday, we would get to pick out a restaurant – any restaurant – and go out with just Mom and Dad (no siblings!) for dinner. The quality time spent with my parents was priceless time not often found with 5 siblings. My parents made sure to carve out that time at least once a year for the individual child. I now very much enjoy taking my own kids out one at a time, to focus on them and the things they like. Talking about their life, listening to them tell us whatever is on their mind, and enjoying ourselves. This is a tradition I would encourage all parents to start. Your children will appreciate it the rest of their lives.

What do you do to simplify birthdays?

    Social Impact on the Home {Think About It}

It’s a new year, and I’m switching things up with this weekly meme. When we began Think About It Thursday, I had some amazing co hosts, and we had a link party going on. It never really took off though. We were all getting burned out, and weren’t sure how to make it better. So we took some time off around the holidays.

This week I’ve been thinking about it again, and decided I would bring back Think About It Thursday, but as a sole blogger. No link party. Just a weekly meme for me to talk about some deeper topics. I found in my Top 10 posts from 2012, that the majority of you visited when I got a little deeper. So my hope is this brings you back each week to have an open discussion on different topics.

You may be wondering “but Adelina, how does that relate to the home?”  Well, let me sum it up for you with my new title –

    Think About It Thursday

    Social Impact on the Home

I’ll discuss different topics as they impact home life. How as a stay at home mom, the larger social issues still effect me.  I want to help change the stereotype that as a stay at home mom I don’t have an opinion, that I’m somehow less than my husband, or that outside of my little family nothing else matters. It does. The world around me matters greatly, because it is a world my kids will face as they go to school, make friends of different faiths and races, and enter the workforce.
I personally believe we should all take an active role in our communities, on a level that fits us. For some that means heading up the PTA, and planning events. For others it might just be silent support through voting on issues, and attending community events.
Some issues we discuss may be political in nature, others religious. Sometimes I might tell you about local events, or national events and how you can get involved. I may discuss different charities I support, and some I don’t.
Most of all, I want an open discussion with you my readers. I want to hear your thoughts and opinions. I want to know what’s important to you, and why you feel passionately about  it.

Tell me, what topics would you like to see on Thursdays?

What social impact do you feel in your home?

*I’m excited to be kicking off our new Think About It Thursday: Social Impact on the Home with Blogelina’s 20 Comments event. Welcome new readers – feel free to browse around, and let me know what you think!
  • Know Me Better 1/12

    Know Me Better 1/12

This is a meme I participated in last year, and really enjoyed. Kathy from I am a Reader Not A Writer ask 5 questions each week. You can answer in the comments, or link up your answers to her post
I hope you all will enjoy getting to know me better.

    1. Where is your favorite spot to read? My ideal place would be either by a fireplace, or in a sunny window seat. Until I set up some nice reading spots in those places though, my reading is done either in my bed, or in the car at the school pick up line.
2.Are you a fast or slow reader? (you can test your reading speed here) According to the staples test, I read 303 words/minute.  21% faster than the national average. A normal adult reading speed.
    3. Fanfiction – Love it or Hate it? Have your ever read/written it? I’ve never read any fanfiction
    4. Summer or Winter? That’s a tough one. I love playing in the snow, and curling up by a warm fire. I don’t like the bitter cold, that doesn’t let you step foot outside without freezing your limbs off. I enjoy summer sunshine, but by the same token as winter, I don’t care for the heat that keeps you inside and unable to do anything fun in the sun. Personally I’ll go for spring or fall.

    5. Truth or Dare?  Depends who I’m playing with. I enjoy a good dare, but I’m also not going to do anything stupid or dangerous. So if I can assume a dare would be one of those two things, I’ll stick to truth.

What 5 Things are you most Thankful for?

Halloween is now behind us. It is November, and for most that means lots of family, baking and traditions; at least in the US. I realize Canada already celebrated their Thanksgiving (thanks for going with this topic anyways Eschelle!).  My group of mommy bloggers and I decided we would take the whole month of November to talk about Gratitude, Giving Thanks, and Thanksgiving in general.

For me, there is so much I am grateful for, but I’ll try to stick to my top 5 today.

    1. My family. Immediate, extended, in laws, and ancestors. They all mean so much in my life. My parents, I don’t think could have been any better. They care about all their kids, and no matter what are always there for us – through the ups and downs. My husband, I love with all my heart. He makes such a wondeful Daddy to our kids. He works hard because he knows it’s important that I raise our kids. My kids because well they are just little miracles. The joy they can bring to any room, and smiles they can put on anyones face, just warms my heart. My in-laws, because I don’t think I could have gotten any better. They are truly an amazing couple full of love! And of course all my cousins, aunts, uncles, sister inlaws, brother inlaws, you all are so unique. You each inspire me to be better in different ways.

    2. My religion. I don’t mention it often here, but I am a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, aka Mormon.  Yes this is the religion of my parents. No, we don’t practice polygamy. Yes I don’t drink alcohol, tea or smoke. No I am not forced to be a stay at home and under my husbands tyrannical rule. Yes I chose to stay at home and be a mom to my kids because I believe it’s important (and I don’t have a tyrannical husband). No, actually I do believe in the Bible. Last and to me the most important thing because nothing else matters, is that YES I do believe in Christ. I believe He is the Son of God. I believe He came to earth to show us the path to return to Heaven. I believe in doing good to all men. I believe Christ gave His life for each one of us, because He loves us each individually and knows each of our own personal sufferings. My religion is who I am. It is what shapes what I do. And I am so grateful I have it in my life, because I have felt so much joy through the knowledge I have from it.

    3. My baby brother.  Right now he is serving a 2 year LDS mission in Boston. I miss him like crazy. When he was little, he was my tickle buddy. We always had a blast together. And now he is serving others for 2 years. Giving 2 years of his life for something more important. He has set an example for my family that I love. I will deal with missing him for 2 long years, because he is blessing the lives of others. Last week my dad found a voice recording of my brother and sister that they must have sent me when I was just in college. They missed me, wanted me to visit soon. And they loved me. Seriously, I just have some awesome siblings that I love.

    4. A roof over our heads. I may complain about the mice, or the sloping floors, or the carpet in the kitchen. But when it comes down to it, I’m just grateful we have a roof over our heads. That my family has shelter from the elements. That we have heat to take away the cold nights. Rooms to sleep in, and beds too. A kitchen to cook in. I have a house, and it sure beats being homeless!

    5. Modern technology. Ok I’m not that big into tv and the latest gadgets, but I do love modern technology and the access it gives us. I get to send my voice to thousands of you through this blog and it’s many social media platforms. I get to connect with people I haven’t seen in years. I have been able to make new friends, that I probably will never even meet, but that encourage me every time I struggle with something. I love that modern technology can bring families spread over the world all together. My brother just created us a family site on myfamily.com  It is awesome! My older brother who I don’t stay in contact with as much as I should, I now feel close to again. Modern technology is a wonderful tool, when used for good.

Now it’s your turn! We’re not picky really, just try to stay with the theme of gratitude, grab our cool button (made by Mark), and link up below! We love reading your posts, and hope you enjoy ours.

    Mailboxes – Think About It!

    This week’s topic
    MailBoxes

What? Seriously, mailboxes. I want to hear your thoughts on mailboxes. Do you love them, hate them. Are you a P.O box only kind of person, or a two timer?

This thought was provoked by my good friend Diane’s post “I Have a Love Affair with my Mailbox” from last week.

I too have a love affair with my mailbox!  Sigh. As Diane said, it brings a lot of junk, but yet I keep hoping to open it and find more than just junk. Why? Because I love my mailbox. I love getting mail, even junk. Silly it may sound, but I feel even if I get junk mail, then somebody out in the world was thinking about me.  True right?
The days I really get let down when I open my mailbox, are the ones that contain nothing. Not even junk. I start thinking negative thoughts. Mostly along the lines of….eh hem….”I just wasted time coming out to check you!” Come on, Adelina, it took all of 10 seconds to walk to the mailbox, and check it.

Maybe if I feed my mailbox more, I would get more out of it? What do you think? See I keep sending letters to my brother (serving a 2year LDS mission in Boston), but he hasn’t written back yet. He’s been gone 6months. I know he’s busy, and honestly I’m not complaining. I enjoy sending him letters.

Since that’s the only mail I feed my mailbox, I should probably try giving it more. Maybe it will then give back some. It definitely couldn’t hurt.

It’s not just what’s inside the mailbox that I like. I like the look of mailboxes. Something about them just screams Home to me. How can you have a home without a mailbox? It just wouldn’t look right. My parents live in a neighborhood that shares a big box of mailboxes, all with keys, and then shared package slots. It’s great for safety concerns, especially if you live in a well off neighborhood. With all the crazies out there you’ve got to keep mail safe. I wouldn’t want one of those though. I prefer something more like this from bhg.com

3 Things You Would Like to Change About Your Child’s School

Most of us are a good couple weeks into school. If our kids are in a new school, we’ve had time to get to know it a bit. If it’s a school you’re kids have been going to forever, you probably know all the ins and outs. So let’s hear them.

For us, we’re at a new school, because our oldest just started Kindergarten. She actually went to preschool at the elementary school last year, but then we moved, so it’s new again.  So far we are really enjoying it, but there are a few things I would love to change!

    1) Pick a different start time! She has afternoon Kindergarten, that starts at 11:50.  I just find it the craziest time. For us, lunch is served at 12, but Kindergarten doesn’t eat at the school, which means I’ve had to change our meal schedule. We now eat at 11. It has totally thrown me off, and my kids have had some funny “grazing” habits since.

    2) A separate pick up area for Kindergarten. There is one turn around area for the whole elementary school, and since Princess V gets out the same time as the rest of the elementary, it makes pick up CRAZY! For the older kids, the parents pull up, wait for their kid, and take off. For parents of the Kindergarteners, we have to park, get out of the car, walk over and let the teacher see us, before they let our kid go. I totally get it, and I think that’s great actually for safety. However, I’ve got 3 smaller kids in the car, and tons of traffic from every other parent there. This is the only place for parents to park their car, besides on the street a good distance away. So I have to show up to the school 20 minutes before it’s out, just to get a good spot right next to the Kindergarten pick up area. That way I can wait until they come out, then leave the other kids in the car (don’t judge, they aren’t alone for more than a minute, and I can see them the whole time!). Totally cuts into Prince L’s napping time.

    3) Keep the fence closed around the playground. I’ve periodically driven by the Elementary school during the day, and noticed the gate leading to the road is wide open, and kids are out playing. I get we live in a small town, but the fence and gate are there for a reason. Crazy people are everywhere, and kids are always looking for a quick escape. Get that gate closed!

Ok, theses are really silly and simple changes. Obviously, they all, except #3 have to deal with my opinion, and schedule. I totally don’t expect the school to change just to accomodate me. As far as I can tell, we have been very fortunate to move to a school district that truly cares about their kids learning!

Back to School – Think About it Thursday

Your hosts for this weekly meme are

I’m so sorry about the lack of last week’s post. We were having internet problems with the move. So welcome back to Think About it Thursday. A weekly meme to let our thoughts spill out. Use the suggested topic, or write about whatever you want. Then link up your post in the linky at the bottom of this page.

    This week’s suggested Topic
    Back To School

I don’t have much to say on this really. I’m nervous and excited. I almost feel like a kid again, ready for the new year, but nervous about making friends.  Only this time it’s for my kids. Our oldest is starting Kindergarten this year. While the second will be in preschool.

For the longest time I was baffled hearing about mom’s crying when their kids started school. I just didn’t get it. When Princess V went to preschool last year, I was so excited for her!  This year is different though. I don’t know why. Maybe my emotions are finally in check. She’s starting Kindergarten, and I do kind of want to cry. My baby is growing up and going to school. She’s going to make lots of friends, and learn so much. Before I know it, she’ll want to spend more time with her friends than with me and her sisters. She’ll want to do her own hair, and pick out her own clothes (ok, she already does that, but I still have a little say). Today she has a Kindergarten test. Every other grade has begun school, but they test the kindergarteners individually the first couple days, and won’t actually start class until next week. Today is Princess V’s appointment. She has been so excited, and I’ve been so nervous. I think she’s right on track, but I know we could have focused more on numbers over the summer.  Isn’t she cute though? Grandma P took her school clothes shopping while they were visiting. I’ve kept all the clothes in a bag waiting for this day. So first thing this morning she and I pulled out the school clothes.  Isn’t she a doll?

Now it’s time for Princess C to go to preschool. If we hadn’t moved, she had made it into the same preschool Princess V went to last year. But we moved. They have a district preschool, but it’s focused mostly on kids who are behind. Princess C knows just about as much as Princess V so I don’t think she’s behind. They’ve put her on a waiting list though. They like having kids who are on track to be role models for those behind.  If she can get in, great, but I’m looking elsewhere. Mark has found an in home preschool that sounds like it has potential, I just haven’t gotten the number from him yet. I’m also considering just doing home preschool with her. I know she really needs the social aspect of being with other kids though. She has a ton of energy, and I can’t always keep up with her. She is my social bug.

My mom taught me preschool and kindergarten at home. I didn’t go to public school until first grade.  When we first had kids that was my plan. I saw no need for preschool and kindergarten outside of the home. My tune has changed though.  My kids love being around other kids. They love learning. Plus by going elsewhere to school I am able to give more focused time to the smaller kids. Having 4 kids so close in age sometimes makes it very difficult to give each one the individual time they need. When the older two get home from school I’ll be able to focus some time on just them. While they are at school, I plan on having some fun activities for Princess R and Prince L.  We’ll go grab a hot cocoa at the Hot Spot, hang out at the library, and do our own crafts together.
I later found out my mom kept me home until 1st grade because there was no preschool or kindergarten to send me to.  She did what she did out of neccessity.  If it comes to it, I will do home preschool, but if we can I know Princess C will really thrive with someone else in a social atmosphere.

  • Think About it – New Meme!

Last week I wrote an article about Toys vs Living Space. At the end of the post, I asked you to “Think About it”. I got some great responses from you all. So much so, that I thought it would be fun to have a weekly meme titled

    Think About It
Each Thursday I’ll have a topic to talk about and get our thinking caps on. Some might be silly, others more serious. My buddy Eschelle from Mumfection has agreed to cohost this meme with me.  We would love for you all to join in! Whether by posting on your own blog, or leaving us comments.
    Here’s how it will work.
Each week Eschelle and I will be writing about a pre-established topic. We will announce the topic a week in advance for anyone that would like to join us.
HOWEVER, you do not have to write about that specific topic. We really just want to know what you are thinking about. What has your mind running? If nothing in particular is catching your fancy at the time, we invite you to post about our preset topic.
Next week, this goes live! We will have a button to grab for your post, and a linky to add your post to.
    Next weeks topic
Children Sharing a Bedroom vs Having their own Room
I won’t get into it right now, because I need something to talk about next week! But suffice it to say, I have a lot on my mind about this topic!  We hope to see you next week!
  • Foodie Friday

    Welcome To Foodie Friday!
Home Maid Simple has teamed up with Diane at Simple Living to bring you a new weekly blog hop.
Each week we will be posting a recipe.  We’d love to have you all join us by linking up your recipes below.
I love food. I’ve mentioned it before, but I have a hard time making the same recipe twice, even if it was amazing, because I always want to try something new. Pinterest hasn’t helped with this food love either.
In fact, my first recipe for you comes from pinterest
I bring to you this week
    Chick-Fil-a nuggets
    (original recipe found here)
My recipe has been altered for a dairy and nut allergy!
3 lbs boneless skinless chicken breasts
    6 eggs
    4 cups flour
    6 TBS powdered sugar
    6 tsp salt
    3 tsp pepper
    canola or vegetable oil
Cut chicken into bite size pieces. Whisk eggs in large bowl. Add the chicken to the eggs, and let marinate in the fridge for about 2 hours.
Mix flour, sugar, salt and pepper in another large bowl.  Heat about 2-3 inches of oil in a pan over medium heat until when you sprinkle water on it, it sizzles. Once the oil is ready, remove the chicken from the egg mixture and coat in dry mixture. Do about 10 pieces at a time, depending on size of your pan.  Add coated chicken to oil, and cook until golden brown. We checked the largest piece of chicken in each batch by cutting it in half  to make sure it had cooked all the way through.  Serve with your choice of sauce. I personally prefer some BBQ, but the kids like Ketchup and Ranch.

We’d love to see what what’s cooking up in your kitchen. Link up a recipe below!

  • Way Back Wednesday – Sisters

I don’t always post a Wordless Wednesday, so looking around I came across another fun Wednesday meme
Way Back Wednesday hosted by Tim and Angi’s blog.
Each week they feature a classic book and movie.  I love the classics, and thought this would be a fun way to share more of me with you my readers!
Today I’m dreaming of a White Christmas in a cozy hotel with Bing Crosby, Danny Kaye, Rosemary Clooney, and Vera-Ellen.
Of course having 2 younger sisters, my personal favorite song from this movie is
    “Sisters”
I hope you’re all enjoying your week before Christmas. Stay warm, and remember to slow down and spend time with your loved ones!
