Disney’s BRAVE – Scotch Eggs Recipe

Make it a movie night with Brave and these Scotch Eggs!
Make it a family movie night. Watch Brave and enjoy Scotch Eggs.
We love the movie Brave. It was one we were truly excited for from the first preview we saw over 6 years ago. When Brave came out we were in the middle of the Princess craze with our little girls.  They loved Beauty and the Beast, Cinderella, and the Little Mermaid. It was also during a time where there seemed to be a lot of backlash on Princesses in general.

Why did Princesses always need a Prince? Couldn’t they take care of themselves? They’re always so helpless – well except Belle. I think people often overlooked her in their generalizations of the helpless Princesses. Actually, I could give a good argument on why every single one of the Disney Princesses was not helpless, and actually quite brave in their own individual stories.

That should probably be its own post. Instead, let’s talk about Brave and the strong-willed red-headed Scottish Princess. Merida. She is a spitfire! And one of my favorite princesses to watch. I’m raising my own little spitfire, and while she and I have way too many head-butting moments like Merida and her mother – I am actually grateful for that determination.
Make it a movie night with BRAVE and this recipe for Scotch Eggs.

When I first watched Brave, I thought it was how Merida was brave enough to stand up for herself against family. She was brave to be herself, and live her own life. The more I watch it, the more I love the ending. Merida was brave for doing those things, but she became braver when she admited she was wrong, took ownership of her choices, and apologized to those she hurt. Saying sorry and meaning it, is the bravest thing any of us can do, and too few of us choose to do.

I’ve made it a personal goal to always apologize to my children when I’m wrong, or when I let my inner bear come out. I want them to know that I’m human, and that apologizing is a good thing. The first few times were not easy, but it’s become a natural habit, and has allowed a lot of trust between us all.

For a fun family movie night, I would highly suggest making these Scotch Eggs! They were a lot of fun to make, and they tasted fantastic! Granted my kids hate eggs…but they all gave the scotch eggs a try, and some really liked them. Some just enjoyed the sausage casing, but that’s ok too. They showed me they were brave enough to give something new a try.
Make it a family movie night with this recipe for Scotch Eggs and the movie Brave.
I knew the kids would be hesitant to try the eggs, and I wasn’t sure just how filling they would be so I paired it with a side of sauteed root veggies. A couple of chopped potatoes and some rainbow carrots from our backyard garden were just screaming to me for a hearty Scottish side. Toss them in a little oil, add some garlic and salt and cook up until fork tender. You’ll love it with the Scotch Eggs!

Make it a movie night with this Easy Jambalaya and more family fun tips for watching The Princess and the Frog.

We love having a family movie night. One of our favorites to watch is Disney’s The Princess and the Frog. As adults, we love it for the Cajun food. The kids love it for the humor sprinkled throughout.

Mark spent 2 years in the southern states, enjoying all the food they have to offer. From the delicious – Jambalaya, Gumbo, Hush Puppies, and Beignets – to the odder – Squirrels and Frog Legs – he’s tried it all. I refuse to make the latter ones, but the rest I enjoy almost as much as him, and so do the kids. Enjoy this recipe for an easy jambalaya that’s not too spicy for kids.

Movies and good food I feel go hand in hand, but I don’t always want to cook up a whole feast. So while I have made beignets before – grab the recipe here – but for our most recent movie I picked them up from our favorite Cajun Cafe – MudBugs. Along with their amazing beignets, I’ve never had a better Hush Puppy than the ones they make. Plus their sauce is just mouthwatering.

The best beignets and hush puppies ever.

  • LEGO Star Wars The Freemaker Adventures Season 1 w/Exclusive Magnets

LEGO Star Wars The Freemaker Adventures Season 1 w/Exclusive Magnets

I received LEGO Star Wars The Freemaker Adventures in exchange for this post. All opinions are my own.

Still looking for those last minute stocking stuffers? LEGO Star Wars The Freemaker Adventures season 1 came out on DVD this month, and it would be perfect for you LEGO Star Wars loving kids.

LEGO Star Ward The Freemaker Adventures with exclusive magnets.

The Freemaker Adventures takes place between The Empire Strikes Back and Return of the Jedi. The story follows young Rowan and his siblings – Kordi and Zander – as they scavenge the galaxy, building and selling starships. One day Rowan finds a natural connection with the force through the Kyber Saber and the siblings life is thrown into the middle of the struggle with the Empire.

My kids absolutely love this show. We found it while browsing Netflix one day, and were sucked in. So when the DVD came out earlier this month, it was one I knew we wanted. The 6 exclusive magnets were totally just a plus!

LEGO Star Wars The Freemaker Adventures

The magnets were quickly claimed by Venice to go on her Mastervision Board, and help keep track of her schedule and everyone else too. I believe for now they’ve divvied out the magnetic characters, so each child is assigned a magnet. Now she can not only keep track of herself, but her siblings too.

I love sitting and watching the LEGO Star Wars shows with the kids because it’s never just sitting in front of the TV. No, when LEGO’s are on screen we pull out the chest of LEGO’s as well. This keeps the kid’s imagination moving as they try to build what’s on screen and in their heads. Take for example the latest creation of Venice. She tells me this is some starship Rowan’s family built.

LEGO Star Wars The Freemaker Adventures

Isn’t that neat? It’s not complete but “You just have to pretend it has a roof and walls”

Have your kids gotten into the LEGO Star Wars The Freemaker Adventures yet? If they love Star Wars and LEGO, then they’re bound to love this show. Give it a try, and don’t forget to grab your copy with the exclusive magnets. You can’t get these anywhere else!

  • Grab some Popcorn, Indiana then Watch these 10 Movies with Ties to Indiana

Grab some Popcorn, Indiana then Watch these 10 Movies with Ties to Indiana

I received Popcorn, Indiana to sample. All opinions are 100% my own thoughts.

Have you ever heard of a little town called Popcorn, Indiana? Neither had I until I saw their Drizzlecorn® popcorn, and just had to try it!

Check out these 10 movies with ties to Indiana while munching on your Popcorn, Indiana kettlecorn. ad

Popcorn, Indiana is actually a small town in Indiana with a population of 42, according to the popcorn package. They grow their corn in GMO-free soil, and us no artificial flavors, colors or preservatives in the making of their popcorn. It’s a cute little town, from what the internet tells me, that I’m tempted to take an afternoon drive through someday.

When I got my Popcorn, Indiana bags I knew I had to watch something truly awesome with it. This wasn’t going to be just any movie popcorn snacking for me. So I did a little research and found these 10 movies with ties to Indiana. If my popcorn is coming from Indiana, I figured my movie should too! Here’s the list along with how they correlate to Indiana.

10 Movies with ties to Indiana to watch while eating Popcorn, Indiana Drizzlecorn® ad A Christmas Story – Set in the fictional town of Hohman, Indiana A Christmas Story is a classic everywhere. It’s the perfect movie to enjoy with the whole family while munching on the Dark Fudge Peppermint Drizzlecorn. You’ll shoot your eye out.

Hoosiers – Loosely based on the Milan High School 1954 state championship win, the title says it all. Hoosiers is set in the rural south-eastern town of Hickory, Indiana.

The Fault In Our Stars – A more recent movie, based off the best-selling book by John Green, we find ourselves in the heart of Indianapolis. As the main characters head out for a picnic at the epic Funky Bones, natives of Indianapolis can say they’ve been there too! Though, the bones were actually reconstructed in Pittsburgh for the filming with the help of the original artist.

Rudy – Another sports film based on the true story of Daniel “Rudy” Ruettiger. Rudy is both based in Indiana and filmed in Indiana. One of the few films Notre Dame has allowed to be filmed on campus. Rudy is inspirational, and a must see if you love sports.

A League of Their Own – Starring Tom Hanks, making it an automatic must-see from me, and featuring the All-American Girls Professional Baseball League. Many of the games featured were filmed at Bosse Field in Evansville, Indiana as well as the League Stadium in Huntingburg Indiana.

Transformers Dark of the Moon – Now this one does not take place at all in Indiana, however, filming took place on the Northern side of the state near Gary, Indiana to showcase Ukraine in the movie.

Pearl Harbor – Another local filming to show a location abroad, the filming of Tokyo’s Industrial section in Pearl Harbor is actually just the US Steel Works in Gary, Indiana.

The Music Man – While not set in or filmed in Indiana, you can’t help but feel a connection to the Hoosier state as the Music Man sings of his hometown Gary, Indiana.

Close Encounters of the Third Kind – While not filmed in Indiana, the main characters we follow on their journey of extraterrestrial encounters are from Muncie, Indiana.

Friendly Persuasion – Following a Quaker family in Indiana, they must decide if they should fight or follow their religious teachings of peace. Another movie to bring you closer to the history of local Hoosiers.

What Indiana, Popcorn® flavor will you try first?

Indiana, Popcorn has both classic popcorn and their drizzlecorn popcorn. With flavors from Sea Salt to Aged White Cheddar, and chocolate drizzled Caramel to Pretzel you’ll find a flavor to love, I guarantee it!

  • World Turtle Day and an Anti-Bullying Message

World Turtle Day and an Anti-Bullying Message

I got this in my email this afternoon from Paramount Pictures. It is apparently World Turtle Day. I had no idea there was such a day, but probably shouldn’t be as surprised since everything has a day, these days.

     #TMNT2

Unfortunately, bullying has many days and moments. I love that Paramount teamed up with the AD Council to remind everyone that bullying is NOT COOL! If you see bullying, don’t stand by. Do something.

    Stand Up.

Stand up for those being bullied. Let them know they have a friend. If you have a friend who chooses to bully, let them know it’s not OK. Don’t allow it in your circle of friends.

    Speak Out.

Use your words for good. Uplift, inspire, and make a difference in someone’s life for the better. When you see bullying, don’t stay quiet.

    Change.

Evaluate yourself. Self-reflection is good for the soul, and often shows us where we fall short, so we can be better ourselves. Have you been a bully? Bullying comes in all forms, and I’d venture to say at one point or another perhaps we’ve all been guilty. Decide now to change. No more gossiping ladies.

Now go enjoy World Turtle Day!

    TMNT: Out of the Shadows

I don’t know what it is, but my kids are all Ninja Turtle obsessed these days. It doesn’t matter that they’re all girls, and love girly things like Princesses and Ponies too. The Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles have found a permanent place in our home. So much so that for Miss Chloe’s birthday this year, her sister bought her Raf’s eye mask and weapons, and we got her a collapsible Ninja Turtle Stool to keep all her special things.

    Teenage Mutant ninja Turtles

I don’t know if we’ll take the kids to the movie, but it comes out the day before my birthday, and I’m kind of a TMNT fan myself having grown up with the green mutants. So maybe I’ll make it my birthday date night.  Do you have Ninja Turtles running around your house?

  • Pete’s Dragon in Theaters August 12th First Look Trailer

Pete’s Dragon in Theaters August 12th First Look Trailer

One of my absolute favorite movies from my childhood is Pete’s Dragon. When I got the email that Disney is remaking it – I may have squealed a bit. The trailer is now out, and I’m so excited!! Check it out.

    #PetesDragon

Starring Bryce Dallas Howard, Oakes Fegley and Robert Redford, this reimagining of Pete’s Dragon can’t get here soon enough! While I limit our kids tv time, like I assume most parents do, I really do enjoy family movie nights especially when it’s sharing one of my favorite stories via film.

    Pete’s Dragon

For years, old wood carver Mr. Meacham (Robert Redford) has delighted local children with his tales of the fierce dragon that resides deep in the woods of the Pacific Northwest. To his daughter, Grace (Bryce Dallas Howard), who works as a forest ranger, these stories are little more than tall tales…until she meets Pete (Oakes Fegley). Pete is a mysterious 10-year-old with no family and no home who claims to live in the woods with a giant, green dragon named Elliott. And from Pete’s descriptions, Elliott seems remarkably similar to the dragon from Mr. Meacham’s stories. With the help of Natalie (Oona Laurence), an 11-year-old girl whose father Jack (Wes Bentley) owns the local lumber mill, Grace sets out to determine where Pete came from, where he belongs, and the truth about this dragon. Disney’s “Pete’s Dragon” opens in U.S. theaters on August 12, 2016.

Hotel Transylvania 2 is now available on Blu-Ray DVD, and I couldn’t be more excited! This movie night party set up is easy to put together, and something the whole family will enjoy while viewing your new movie.

    Hotel Transylvania 2 #MakeItAMovieNight ad

We started with a drink. Sprite is our families favorite choice of drink, and we recalled that the Invisible Man always seems to be holding one drink or another. So I printed out some Glasses, and used photo adhesives to attach them to the Sprite caps.

Invisible Man Drink Station for Hotel Transylvania 2 #MakeItAMovieNight ad

Aren’t those just a blast? I can’t take full credit for this idea though. It was all the kids. I think their new favorite thing to do is walk through the store with me coming up with movie night ideas.

I knew movie night would probably be around the same time as dinner, so we can all get to bed at a decent hour (especially on a school night like today!), so I wrapped hot dogs in crescent roll dough and baked up a Mummy dinner. Classic, but fits in perfectly with the Hotel Transylvania 2 theme.

The star of the show however, and our snacks is Dracula! “Blah blah blah”. In the movie Drac takes his grandson to a Vampire camp to inspire him to be more vampire. I can’t help but think S’mores and Popcorn when I see camping. Being the middle of winter though, we had to do some improvising. Orville Redenbacher’s Movie Theater popcorn is our families favorite with the perfect amount of butter. Add in some toasted marshmallows, and chocolate and you’ve got a S’mores popcorn treat. I wanted this to be all about the Drac though, so we sorted out some red M&M’S® chocolate candies to mix in, and give a little hint of the Drac’s favorite meal.

I love when Disney releases their old classics from the vault!  The Jungle Book was released February 11th on Bluray/Combo pack Diamond Edition. I have to admit, we were so excited, that when we showed up at Walmart to purchase it they were just finishing putting the display out.  We were not going to miss the limited supply of Jungle Book Lunchboxes that you can get exclusively at Walmart!

The Jungle Book Walmart exclusive, #shop, #junglefresh

I have a 7 year old daughter who for some reason has loved The Jungle Book ever since we found an old copy of the large Disney Book at a library sale a year or so ago. She has laid claim to it, and considered it her favorite – even wanting to do her science project on jungle animals. We don’t own a VCR anymore, and my parents only have the VHS version, so she has never seen the movie.

Reading Disney's classic The Jungle Book in preparation for the movie

Friday nights are our movie nights, and we’ve been meaning to invite my niece and nephews over for a long time. What better way to introduce them all to The Jungle Book movie than a party with cousins?  Perfect! I really wanted to make this a night to remember for everyone, so we grabbed some #JungleFresh fruit while we were at Walmart grabbing the movie.

Oh so many ideas! We decided to party like Baloo and enjoy the Bare Necessities of Life – Food, family and shelter.

    Food
Of course we had to have Baloo’s Claw Kabob. Though no prickly pears available, we did find plenty of other fresh fruit, including some special Asian Pears. Also on our menu were Kaa’s Hypnotic cupcakes, Fancy Ants (raisins on celery), Scaredy Cat Chili, and King Louie’s Coconut Banana smoothie

We made Kaa’s hypnotic cupcakes using Duff Goldman’s Zebra cake mix and some swirled chocolate and vanilla frosting on top.

The real treat came in the form of King Louie’s Coconut Banana Smoothies. Yum yum yum!!  I’ll be honest though, these were a little tricky to make, but so worth the mess.  Check out my awesome husband cutting open our coconuts.

Yes that is a coconut on a miter saw. Since we were going to be putting our smoothie inside the coconut shell, we wanted some pretty flat bottoms, and smooth edges. To be honest I’m sure there is an easier way (like the ways suggested on wikihow), but I let my husband have his fun. Plus we got some awesome coconuts out of it.

Coconut Banana Smoothie Recipe at the bottom of the post!!

    Family
We were ready to party with all that food, but we still need some family.  I was telling my friend about the party, and she jumped on our bandwagon and had her husband blow us up some balloon animals. Definitely a highlight for any party with kids are the balloons. Just check out the birds, snakes, monkeys, elephants and of course, Baloo!

#JungleFresh #shop Party with Balloon Animals

During the movie some kids were pretty entranced with their coconut smoothie while watching, and others had fun making paper plate masks. We were going for jungle animals, but I’m sure you know what happens when you give kids markers and paper plates – they take their own liberties.

#JungleFresh #shop mask making, coconut drinking

After the movie was over we had some extra wiggles we needed to get out before sending everyone home, so we reenacted Shanti as she tried to carry the water from the river where Mowgli first meets her. The kids wanted me to put water inside the bowl…but not in my house kids! Maybe another day during the summer when we’re outside.

    Jungle Book games #JungleFresh #shop
I’m not sure if it helped get the wiggles out, or just riled them up some more, but they did love it immensely. Even Uncle M joined in with some bowl balancing and hip waving.

    Shelter
We added some Jungle flair to our party by hanging dark green crepe paper around the television. It really gave the feeling of watching it in the Jungle!

If you ever find yourself lost in the jungle, you could almost completely recreate this smoothie. It will probably be a bit chunkier since you’ll use a rock to mash up all the fruit, and your coconuts may not sit on a flat surface, but you’ll still enjoy this treat.

    Ingredients
    1. 4 whole coconuts
    2. 3 frozen bananas
    3. 8 oz pineapple (or 1 cup)
    4. 2 15oz can papaya chunks (if you can find fresh, even better!)
    5. 1/2 cup Honeydew Melon chunks
    6. 2 cup coconut milk
    7. 2 cup apple juice
    Instructions
    1. Drill 3 holes in your coconuts and drain out the milk. You can save this to use in your smoothie – we used a can of coconut milk.
    2. Use your preferred method to open your coconut. We used a miter saw to smooth out the bottoms so they wouldn’t roll around, and then sliced 1/2 inch off the tops. Rinse well.
    3. Take your remaining ingredients and toss in your blender.
    4. Blend until smooth. You may need to do this step in 2 batches to fit in your blender.
    5. Pour smoothie into the coconut shells.
    6. Add a straw and enjoy.
