    Struggling with messy bedrooms?

Messy bedrooms feel like my life right now. I’ve gotten back to the point of walking past and just shutting the kid’s bedroom doors so I don’t have to see it. Then I came across this article I shared a few years ago, and my resolve to have clean bedrooms has returned!

3 tips from Positive Parenting Solutions to help kids clean their messy bedrooms.

Clean Bedrooms—Not Just in Your Dreams

We all know the scene:  a few carefully sung words by Mary Poppins, and the Banks’ children’s dolls and clothes march into the toy chest and fold themselves neatly into the closet.

Parents and kids alike wish it were real.  But no amount of singing or snapping is going to make that nightmare of a bedroom clean itself.  And despite your best efforts, nagging isn’t working either.
While you might not have Mary Poppins’ super powers, you can employ strategies that will help your kids clear their clutter and rediscover that they do have a floor under that mess. Try these “practical magic” tips that will get real results:

Give the mess a rest. What’s the worst that would happen if your kids never cleaned their rooms? Toys would get lost or broken, clothes would stay stained—and that’s no fun. To let these natural consequences do the dirty work for you, first warn your kids about the pitfalls of a messy room and assure them you have complete confidence in their ability to keep things tidy on their own. Then, say nothing when nature runs its course. Refuse to rescue your kids by replacing a missing toy or running an emergency load of laundry, and soon enough, the rooms will get straightened and a lesson will be learned.

Wake your kids’ inner room-cleaner with an alarm they’ll notice. The next time dirty socks and building blocks start intermixing, resist the need to nag. Instead, do a little planning so you can phrase it this way: “When your room is clean, then you may go play with your friends.” The “sugar” in your sentence can be any regularly occurring privilege, from enjoying TV time to eating dinner—but avoid offering rewards or bribes, as you’ll continually have to up the ante. Also, allow plenty of time for a thorough cleaning to take place—depending on the size of the mess, that’s probably at least 20 minutes before a favorite show or dinnertime.

Swallow your need to control. Nothing short of magic can control another person—but you can control your own reaction. Keep the yelling at bay by deciding what you will do whenever the mess gets out of control. At a calm time (so, not while you’re wading through their rooms), inform your kids that they’re old enough to keep their rooms clean. Then say something like, “If your room isn’t clean by dinner every Saturday, I will clean it with a cardboard box. Any toys and clothes not put away will be stored in the basement for a week.” Then, follow through. If you find your kids aren’t missing their favorite toy or coolest jeans, it’s time for a trip to Goodwill.

Put these techniques to work, and you and your kids will be well on your way to enjoying clean bedrooms—no song and dance routine required.

What tips do you have to tame messy bedrooms?

Teaching Kids to Clean with a Bathroom Cleaning Station

The last thing any pregnant momma wants to do is scrub the toilets, at least this one. I’ve been teaching my kids how to clean since a young age, and this year has been no different. So today I’m sharing with you my Bathroom Cleaning Station.

Create a Cleaning Station and never Miss a Mess again! #ScrubTheMess #ad

It was a jump for joy moment to find that there was a new Scotch-Brite® Disposable Toilet Scrubber on the market! There’s not much about bathrooms that make people shout for joy, but us Mom’s know the real victories in life. A clean bathroom, HELLO! It’s like one the best feelings in the world, am I right? The Disposable Toilet Scrubber means no more wet toilet brushes being left in the bathroom. A simple click of the button and the scrubber is in the trash.

Have you seen? NEW Scotch-Brite® Disposable Toilet Scrubbers and refills are at Kroger. #ScrubTheMess #ad

After our rental with the moldy toilets, I get sensitive about having our toilets spic and span. So for the last few year I’ve been specifically focusing on teaching the kids how to clean the bathrooms. My 6-year-old happens to be the most fantastic bathroom cleaner you’ve ever seen, and when given the choice of cleaning her room or the bathroom, she’ll always go for the toilets. With a little supervision, like when we clean the toilet, she’s phenomenal.

Check out these Elegant Bathroom Ideas

So now that the kids know how to clean the bathroom, I decided it was time to make a checklist. With a wipeable checklist, I don’t have to hover when I send them to clean the bathrooms anymore. Instead, I can just hang out – haha – and wait until they finish everything before I head in and make sure it is all done. This awesome checklist allows the kids – and even forgetful grownups – to visually see what needs to be done, and double check that they got it all.

I won’t lie, the kids are really good at spiffing up their bathroom. It’s organized and looks from the surface pretty clean. Sometimes, though, I will find rolled balls of wet towels in the corner from their attempt at wiping off the counter, or cleaning around the toilet. So to combat that, I created the Bathroom Cleaning Station. Hand in Hand with the checklist, the kids can now see which cleaning product should be used where, and I can make sure it all got done.

    Bathroom Cleaning Station

    Supplies

    • Small box or Basket – same size as the back of the toilet works perfect
    • Scotch-Brite Disposable Toilet Scrubber and Refills
    • Wet Wipes
    • Glass Cleaner
    • Printable Checklist and corresponding Images
    • Dry Erase Marker

Alright, so the kids have cleaned the bathroom -minus the toile – and grabbed me for an inspection. Things are looking pretty good, but the one area I let them skip is the toilet. Of course, they think it’s fun to do, but I prefer they get me before finishing it up so we can use the Disposable Toilet Scrubbers properly. The New Scotch-Brite Disposable Toilet Scrubber was designed to reach the messes we’ve been leaving behind – like under the rim – an often attempted spot to clean, but frequently missed.

Now if we ever live in a rental with those nasty moldy toilets again, I know I can trust Scotch-Brite in my bathroom cleaning arsenal. With its built-in bleach alternative cleaner with pumice – rust and hard water have no chance! You can pick up the New Scotch-Brite Disposable Toilet Scrubber and Refills at your local Kroger.

You probably all know how much I love Spring Cleaning. It’s probably one of the topics I talk about most, at least during this time of year. Have you ever thought about Spring Cleaning your appliances? They work hard all year long to clean for you, it’s time to give back and spring clean the tools that clean for you.

I recently came across Lem Shine products and knew I was going to love them. Citric Acid is a fantastic natural cleaner, but I have a hard time cutting up a lemon and using it to clean instead of eating it in say, a nice tall glass of Lemonade. Lemi Shine is powered by 100% natural citric extracts, making their products both effective and safe to use.

Lemi Shine products are Clean Freak Approved! ad #CleanFreakClean #SpringTimeCleanTime

See, in my house, I have a lot of spring cleaning helpers. There’s my kids of course – 4 of them. They are fantastic little cleaners….well, I like to believe they are at least. We’re working on it. For sure they can help with the dishes, so they often get put in charge of rinsing the dishes and filling the dishwasher. They are OK with this chore as long as I let them put in the soap.

Truth is, with Lemi Shine products I could put the kids completely in charge of spring cleaning the whole house and I wouldn’t have a single worry. I could sit back with that glass of Lemonade and really enjoy myself! I’m a Mom that leads by example, though, and have a tendency to be a bit of a clean freak when it comes to the deep spring cleaning. I want everything done just right so I can leave it alone until next year.

I get down and gritty with cleaning the grease spots on the undersides of cupboards, the window screens and tracks that have picked up all that winter grime, and it’s the perfect time to make sure my appliances are in tip-top shape. Lemi Shine Dishwasher Cleaner and Disposal Cleaner are my go-to kitchen appliance cleaners. They get in the spots that I can’t reach to make sure my everyday cleaning is actually clean.

    20 minutes to a clean home with #EurekaPower #ad
I really like getting to know my readers, and I do hope you like getting to know me too! Otherwise, you wouldn’t be here right? So a few things you really should know about me – I LOVE cooking and baking. I LOVE spending time with my kids. I really like putting the two together. Unfortunately that usually causes something I don’t like. Cleaning. Who does though right? I like to have things clean, but try hard to do it quickly and effectively. That way I have more time to do the things I love.
When we moved my beloved Eureka Vacuum was not packed carefully. That was OK though, because what did I find at Walmart? A newer upgraded Eureka on Rollback of course. I seriously won’t buy any other vacuum at this point – I’m a Eureka girl through and through because the quality and price can not be matched in my opinion.

So this one day, I decide we’re going to make bread. Not only that, we’re going to make bread like my mom made bread! She was the queen of entertaining lots of kids in the kitchen. How she kept her sanity, I will never know, since she did not own a eureka to clean up our messes. Perhaps my siblings and I were a little less indulgent in the mess making though?
Make bread with the kids #EurekaPower #ad
I remember my mom giving us all a bowl of flour, a handful of dough, and chocolate chips to decorate our dough creations with. I recall adding pepperoni at times too. When I decided to do this with my kids over the weekend, it was mostly because I did not feel good, and I needed them to be entertained. I of course didn’t have any chocolate chips on hand, so grabbed them some items from the baking cupboard – reeses pieces, sprinkles, and jimmies.
Messes happen, clean them up with #EurekaPower #ad
See I even thought I was doing good giving them a tiny portion of chocolate to either work into their dough, or eat as they saw fit. My kids though, they just went WILD! I may have forgot to take the bucket of flour off the table while grabbing the other treats though – in which case I can only blame myself for what occurred next.
Messes happen. Clean them with #EurekaPower #ad
Truly a sight to make any homemaker with a pounding headache cry. In the past, I probably would have. This time I didn’t, because I had my brand new weapon! The Eureka Suction Seal 2.0. Once I put the kids bread creations in the oven, I began clean up, and let me tell you – 20 minutes total to get this disaster zone back to spic and span! Let me show what I did.
First – Do NOT, and I repeat, DO NOT let those kids leave the kitchen yet! They are covered in flour, and if you turn your back for a minute they may make it all the way into your bed where they will leave more traces of flour. Grab your Eureka turn the dial from floor to tools, add the brush attachment (not the upholstery attachment..unless the uh, previous scenario happened…). Now line your kids up and give them a “hose” down.
#EurekaPower on board tools can clean anything! #ad
Phew, you can now safely send the kids out of the room. Unless you’d like to teach them to clean – I will warn you though, that can often lead to a bigger mess when it involves flour and candy. Now that we’ve got the kids entertained elsewhere, keep the tools going, and head to the table. You can continue to use the brush attachment. I prefer to because the bristles help penetrate the cracks where the leaf’s of my table attach.
Vacuum the table for a quick clean up in the kitchen #EurekaPower #ad
When I clean I like to start at the top and work my way down. From the table top, I move onto the chairs. Again the hose attachment does wonders on the chairs, getting around all the bars, and even down the legs of the chairs and table.
Finally, onto the floor! A quick switch from tools to floor, turn the floor brush back on, and we’re almost done!  I love love love the suction seal on this vacuum – they ensure that the flour is being completely picked up, and not just scattered around the floor. If there’s one thing I hate more than cleaning, it’s cleaning only to find I missed spots all over because my tools didn’t do their job. I don’t have to worry about that with the Eureka. When it cleans, it really is clean.
Eureka Suction Seal 2.0 picks up all the dirt! #EurekaPower #ad
Once you’re finished vacuuming the floor, you’re almost done! The last step is so simple though! Just grab a damp towel and wipe over the table and chairs. You know you’d never use a wet towel on flour before, but with how well you’ve just cleaned up with you vacuum, a slightly damp towel gives your kitchen the finishing touch to be sparkling clean.
    20 minutes to a clean kitchen! #EurekaPower #ad
Don’t forget to put your vacuum away. I may later regret it, but for the time being I’m really enjoying just how fascinated Little Prince is with the vacuum rewind. I think it may be one of the best additions to a vacuum I’ve ever seen! No more crazy tangled cord messes.
Retractable cord makes putting the vacuum away easy and fun! #EurekaPower #ad

Adding a little Spring to the Bathroom and a Giveaway

Out of all the household chores, bathrooms seem to be low on my list of what gets cleaned, when it should probably be higher up. Sometimes I think it’s because as a kid in my parents house, I cleaned my fair share of bathrooms. Perhaps now I’m trying to do something “new”, all while knowing I should be cleaning bathrooms.

Somedays I realize though I just need to get it cleaned up, at least part of it. Getting new items to make the room look a little more pleasing is always a plus though – like Mrs Finnegan’s Finest Soaps!
I know it’s not just me, so please raise your hand if your bathroom ever looks like this –
Now admittedly the fact the sink is outside the actual bathroom and more in the closet surely doesn’t help. Many things get laid on the counter, like pants, that should be hung up. Even without the set up though, our bathroom counters tend to just get cluttered. Wyoming Girl Turned Coastie Wife has a great article on organizing bathrooms in small spaces everyone should check out.
Alright, so I took the first steps and cleaned up the space, but as I did so the beautiful spring colors in the soaps reminded me of some bowls I’ve had in storage since our trip to Japan. I decided to move all the hair ties from the plastic bag into a bowl, as well as the q-tips. It just looks so much nicer alongside the Blackberry Sage Soap
My parents brought us a flat rock they found while camping last year, that works perfectly as a soap holder. It all feels so lovely and natural around our master bath sink now. Don’t you think?

When Mark and I first got married, I was pretty good at vacuuming once a week, whether it visibly needed it or not. As adults we kept our floors clean from most crumbs and spills, and since we spent most of our days at work and school, there just weren’t a lot of messes to clean up

    Then we had kids.

I kid you not, kids are messy. Even if they have a desire for clean things, they just seem to spread crumbs everywhere. I don’t like to stereotype, but it really wasn’t too bad – if you don’t count our flour escapade – until we had a boy. That or it’s our small living space that seems to have made things extra messy – I’m pretty sure I can attribute the food everywhere to the little Prince though.

I finally decided I needed a vacuum that could help me clean everyday, instead of once a week. Something lightweight, but with enough power to clean every nook and cranny in the house. I headed out to Walmart to purchase the Eureka AirSpeed All Floors one night at 7pm, the only sane time to take 4 kids alone to look at vacuums.
    Vacuum buying at Walmart #EurekaPower #cbias #shop

Once we had the vacuum at home I could not wait to start using it. It had every feature I wanted plus some!

    • Lightweight. It even has a carrying handle on the back that our previous model did not have.
    • Less bulky. The canister is slimmer, making it easier to push around, and store inconspicuously in our small apartment.
    • Multi-surface. Comes with all your regular vacuum attachments, plus the added feature of turning off the floor brush for bare floors.

Now don’t shake your head at me, but do you realize just how awesome vacuums are, and all the places they can clean if you have the right kind?

Kitchen – This might be a place you already use your vacuum. Of course it makes sense if you’ve got carpet in your kitchen – but you all know how I feel about that! – if you’ve got tile or linoleum or even hard wood floor, a vacuum might not be your first go to tool for cleaning. If you want to vacuum your hard floors without ruining them, look for a vacuum that can turn off the brush and has a bare floor setting. By turning the brush off you’ll take away the chance of scratching your floors, or just spreading the crumbs around.

    Vacuum Brush turns off! #EurekaPower #shop #cbias

Bathroom – I was talking to my sister recently, who does not own a vacuum and neither do her roommates – crazy kids – and asked her if there was one place she’d use a vacuum where would it be? Her response – to get all the hair out of the bathroom. YES! Oh so yes! With 3 girls, our bathroom gets covered effectively in hair, and bits of toilet paper, and yes…more spit out food because hey mom won’t yell at me if she can’t see me doing it… Since the vacuum will be sitting in one spot on what we’ll assume is a hard surface, you’ll want to turn the brush off while you use the hose for the counter tops. You don’t want to wear a hole through the floor from a constant pounding (which I may or may not have experience with)

Multi-Surface – My absolute favorite feature of the Eureka AirSpeed All Floors is that I can vacuum across two surfaces at one time.  Normally you want to avoid different surface seams,  but when you have multi-surfaces in your home, it’s hard to avoid those, while still keeping them clean. One good example would be area rugs. My poor rugs have turned up corners from vacuum brushes pulling them in as I try to get them clean. With the ability to turn off the brush, I no longer have that concern.
    Multi Surface Vacuuming #EurekaPower #cbias #shop

Furniture and Mattresses – We all know to look for spare change in the couch, but if money can fall down there, so can everything else. The hose attachment is great for cushions that can’t be removed, while the stair and upholstery brush is perfect for the cushions themselves. These same tools are great for your bed mattresses as well. You should clean your mattresses at least once, if not twice a year. I like to periodically pour baking soda on the mattresses, let it sit for a couple hours and then vacuum it off. Truly my best friend on the vacuum is the stair and upholstery brush. The suction from the AirSpeed assures me it’s giving the mattress a nice deep cleaning as well.
    Clean mattresses 1-2 times a year #shop #EurekaPower #cbias

Concrete – No I am not kidding you!  I know there is someone out there with a concrete basement, probably working on making it a place for the kids to play. It’s probably not an area you worry about cleaning frequently, but when you do, a broom just kicks up the dust. With the AirSpeed All Floors I was able to vacuum our concrete patio, and wow! I can’t sweep out there very well because we’re in the basement, and then there’s all these cracks where it changes from concrete to wood planks. The kids love playing out there, but I hate how dirty it is. I’ll be honest this was a total experiment – but it was one that worked!  Disclaimer: Do not use your house vacuum on wet surfaces! Use a wet vac for any water messes.

    Vacuum your concrete floors #EurekaPower #shop #cbias

Ceiling Fixtures (BONUS! in case you were counting)There once was a time I looked up and decided my ceiling fan needed a serious dusting. Not wanting to spread the dust onto the floor, I thought to myself “Adelina, why not try the vacuum hose?” So I did just that. Albeit slightly difficult with this cutie turning it off, it worked amazingly well.

The only thing that would have made this first attempt easier was if I had a longer hose on that vacuum. The Eureka AirSpeed All Floors has a total reach of 39 feet. The hose itself making up 12 of those. When you add on the attachments, you’ve got a nice reach going on. We no longer have any ceiling fans, but now I’m dreaming of spring cleaning our recessed lighting all with a vacuum.

Where would YOU use your vacuum?
  • Fresh Smelling Laundry with Purex #Giveaway

Can I tell you how happy this meme made me?  It was proof positive that I am not the only one who does this. Just this morning I went to start a load of laundry and found a load I had started….last Saturday…I think.

Thank goodness I had a bottle of Purex Crystals Mountain Breeze. I have found that once you leave the clothes in the wash, if you’re using a non-scented detergent the second wash won’t get all of that musky smell out.

Yep, that’s 3 day old laundry in there. It was just a load of blankets this time, but I don’t really care to cuddle up with blankets that aren’t completely fresh smelling. It just ruins the experience of a good cuddle with the kids.
I really love how easy the Purex Crystals are to pour. The design of the bottle fits nicely into my hand, and the crystals come out gently without dumping out. I know it doesn’t matter to most, but for some reason I just really like that the measuring cup isn’t the actual lid to the crystals. There is a flip top to cover the spout, but then the measuring cup fits nicely right on top.
The measuring cup has easy to see lines (unless of course you are trying to take a picture, than it gets a little harder to see…) that help make getting the right amount a breeze. Small, Medium and Large loads all accounted for.
I personally stick to the small load measurement for all our laundry. I haven’t seen a difference in how fresh our clothes smell, so I like to stretch out it’s usage. I do the same with our detergent as well for skin sensitivity issues.

Just check out…and please take note of all that confetti being thrown.

Super Boy teams up with Purex Fels-Naptha

*This is a sponsored post. I received product to review. All opinions are 100% mine*

Super Boy has taken up residence in our home this week. With hugs for his family, and blankets for the cold, Super Boy loves taking care of his family.  But every super hero has his weakness.

While Super Boy is great at cheering the sad, and cleaning up toys, some monsters are beyond his realm.  Purex Fels-Naptha came to Super Boy’s rescue when he was attacked by the evil juice monster.

While Super Boy has been fighting crime since 2012, Purex Laundry Bar and Stain Remover has been fighting stains since 1894.  That’s over 100 years of expertise!

We were pretty impressed with this stain treatment. We tried it first on some old stains with not much of a difference.  However, when we tried it on a fresh stain, even one as tough as juice, the result was amazing. All you have to do is rub the wet stain with some Purex Fels-Naptha laundry bar, and an almost immediate dulling occurred. After running it through the wash, there was no sign of our evil stain left.

Are you ready to fight stains?

Healthy Child Healthy World with Seventh Generation

*Last week I had the opportunity to speak with representatives from Seventh Generation, Healthy Child Healthy World, and The Motherhood. Compensation was given. All opinions are 100% my own*

I just have to share this video with you all. It brought back a lot of memories of my childhood before making me realize just how different the world has become for our children.

Staggering, isn’t it? I remember going out and running through our wooded backyard without a care in the world. I often went outside without shoes on, and it was OK!

What really got me thinking, though, and really re-evaluating the everyday products I buy and use in our home was this next stat –

In the European Union 1,328 chemicals have been banned from use in personal care items. Only 11 have been banned OR restricted in the US.

Isn’t that crazy?  At first you might think, those Europeans just like to restrict things, they’re overly cautious. But really let’s think about it. Surely with a 1,317 difference, there’s got to be some more substance to it.

I know I’ve shared multiple “green” cleaning products with you in the past, but truth be told, my absolute favorite cleaner is Hot Soapy water. I find it just does the best job, and it truly is the safest to use around the kids.

I found a few more of these studies to be quite interesting and thought you’d like to look over them yourselves –

    • In a study of 10 minority newborns, more than 232 chemicals were found in the umbilical cords! Did you get that? Our babies are being exposed to hundreds of chemicals before they’re even out of the womb. Scary
    • In a study of 10 children’s face paints, all 10 tested positive for lead. Hello! You have to sign forms when buying an old house to make sure you’re aware that lead could be in the walls, but hey, let’s go paint some lead on our kids face. Sounds about right to me.
    • Studies have found flame retardant, Bisphenol-A, and other environmental chemicals in breast milk  Great, breast is best right? but how much are we losing that with the addition of chemicals into our lives.
    • Consumer Product Safety Commission has recalled children’s toys and jewelry for high lead content. Shouldn’t we test this before we buy it? Before we expose our family to potentially dangerous chemicals?
Knowledge is power right? I hope that this knowledge will inspire you to take action as well.

These are some great things you can do in your home, but if you’d like to get involved on a larger scale, I encourage you to reach out to your local Senators and urge them to pass the Chemical Safety Improvement Act.

Did you know that the law regulating chemical use in our everyday products has not been updated in over 35 years?!  Seriously, I think that’s a bit long. We live in a constantly changing, and growing world, not to look at something so crucial as the way we use chemicals.
