  • Everything You Need for Home Canned Pears

Everything You Need for Home Canned Pears

It’s time to store some fruit for the winter. OK, we’re in the 21st century, but if you’ve never canned anything before, I think you’re missing out. Canned pears are one of my utmost favorite home canned products. This post contains affiliate links and I will be compensated if you click on and make a purchase through them.

The first time I canned pears on my own was 6 years ago when I ordered 40lbs of Pears from The Pear Guy through our church. I was very excited to be preserving so much fruit for my kids to enjoy just as I did at their age. I had NEVER canned on my own before and was very nervous about it.
I still get nervous before starting a canning project, but I’ve done it so often now, it’s just about diving right in.

    Home Canned Pears Tips

Before starting you’ll want to gather your equipment. If you’re first starting out, it may seem kind of pricey, and not worth the effort, but most of these things you only have to buy once.
    • 40lbs Pears
    • 7-8 Quart canning jars and lids
    • paring knife
    • water bath canner
    • Jar lifter
    • wide mouth funnel
    • sugar
    • water

Once you have everything ready, you’ll want to prepare your syrup. I like to use a light syrup because quite frankly I have a sweet tooth. However, you can also can the pears in fruit juice. If you choose the juice method I would stick with 100% Pear Juice.

For this many pears, I make a double batch of syrup. Heat 18cups water and 4 1/2 cups sugar on the stove. Depending on your pot, you may need to do this in 2 batches.

While the syrup is heating, go ahead and prepare the jars. You’ll want them washed and sanitized. To sanitize my jars, I prefer using the oven. Set it to 250 F. Place the jars and rings – not the rubber lids – in a pan and set in the oven. They need at least 20 minutes in the oven, but you can leave them longer as you prepare the fruit.

For home canned pears, sanitize jars and rings in the oven at 250 F for 20 minutes.

The prep work is done, and it’s time to get started on the pears. You’ll want to wash, peel, and core your fruit. My favorite way to get the most fruit, is by blanching the pears in boiling water for about 30seconds to 1 minute, then dipping them in an ice bath. The peels come off fairly easily at this point with a paring knife. The downside is that the pears get a bit more soft from the boiling water. So you can always just take a knife and peel and core your pears as if you were going to eat them right then.

Once the pears are peeled, and sliced place them in a bowl with some lemon juice to avoid browning. Pick Your Own has some more tips on keeping the fruit from browning while preparing the rest of the fruit. This is the point where it’s also nice to have someone helping. The more hands, the less time the fruit it sitting out and turning brown.

Now I dry pack my pears, but you can also hot pack them which is the recommended way.  To dry pack – also known as raw pack – you stuff the cold pears into the hot jars. Once they are full pour in your syrup leaving about a 1/2 inch at the top. Slide a butter knife down the side of the jar and press on the pears to release any trapped air. I’ve always done it this way and never had any issues with spoilage.

Boil a small pot of water for your canning lids. Once the pears and syrup are in the jar, wipe off the rims with a clean damp cloth. Then you’ll dip the lid into the hot water before placing on the jar. Screw on the rings, finger tight, and prepare to process them.

Canned Pears packed in quart should be processed in a water bath canner for 25 minutes. When done, remove the jars from the canner with your nifty jar grabber, and place on a towel to cool. You may start hearing popping sounds – this is the sweet sweet sound of each jar sealing. Give them a day to cool, then press on the lids. If they did not seal there will be a little bubble you can press on. Any unsealed jars should be immediately placed in the fridge and used over the next few days.

Correctly sealed jars can be placed in your pantry or food storage and should be used over the next year.

  • 20 Wheat Free Foods

    20 Wheat Free Foods

Do you or your child suffer from a wheat allergy? The following list of foods are wheat free, and pretty delicious too.

20 Wheat Free Foods to try when you can no longer eat wheat due to a food allergy.

Just because you have allergies doesn’t mean you can’t enjoy food still. When we first found out Lincoln had food allergies I felt so lost! We’re still in the figuring it out stage, but I’m feeling a bit less overwhelmed now that we have it on the calendar to see an Allergist.

One of the top allergies we believe Lincoln is suffering from is Wheat. I wouldn’t say it’s a life threatening allergy as of yet, but he has lived his whole life with the sniffles. When we started taking wheat out, they have come less often. His complaints of “hair in my mouth”- a common way for kids to describe an allergy attack – have also been non-existant since removing wheat.

This was the one allergy that had me scratching my head on how to remove. It seemed every box and package I picked up contained wheat. Things I would never have guessed had wheat in them, had it listed in the allergy information.

I’ve found the best way to elimate wheat is to make everything from scratch. You know the ingredients going in and there are a fair amount of flour substitutes out there. The following is a list of wheat free recipes you can make and enjoy whether you have a food allergy or not.

    Wheat Free Snacks

Frozen Grapes are one of our favorite snacks, especially during the hotter months of the year.
Butternut Squash Sugar Cookies on FaveHealthyRecipes look amazing and perfect for fall snacking.
Gluten Free Cornbread is pretty easy and has simple ingredients as you transition to a wheat free diet.
Homemaid Trail Mix that is wheat free, dairy free, and nut free comes from The Thrifty Couple!
Orange Sorbet only has 3 ingredients and is super easy to make. You can mix it up with different flavors too.
Peanut Free No Bake Cookies are not only wheat free but peanut free too!

    Wheat Free Breakfast

Egg Rolls are a nice filling way to start the morning.
Cinnamon and Sugar Sweet Potatoes make a great side dish or sweet breakfast.
Hash Brown Breakfast Nachos  from The Choas and the Clutter look like a fun breakfast that could easily be made to fit your own tastes.
Coconut and Cornmeal Pancakes from Maple and Marigold sound interesting, but definitely worth a try if you’re looking for a classic breakfast.
Gluten Free Breakfast Casserole from Tastes of Lizzy T is another awesome looking recipe I can’t wait to try!
Gluten Free Breakfast Pizza from Girl and the Kitchen is probably more adult friendly, but I might get Lincoln to try it.
Pumpkin Breakfast Cookies from from Art from My Table is every kids dream. Who doesn’t love cookies for breakfast?

    Wheat Free Dinners

Chicken and Broccoli Curry is delicious and a nice well balanced dinner.
Nachos for dinner! Pile high with beans, lettuce, tomatoes and onions and you have a dinner instead of just a snack.
Creamy Potato Cauliflower Soup will warm you up on a cold night.
White Chicken Lasagna from Tastes of Lizzy T that is gluten free sounds fabulous.

    Wheat Free Breads

Paleo Pita Tortilla-Naan Bread from Forest and Fauna uses a few more odd ingredients, but if you’re craving some bread this looks pretty good.
Cauliflower “bread” sticks are on my must-try list. Bread is the biggest thing we’re missing right now.
Gluten Free Banana Bites from Juggling Act Mama are another fantastic treat that allows us to have a wheat free treat.

Do you have food allergies? Let me know what wheat free recipes are your favorites.

Turn Orange Sorbet into individual pots of gold for St Patricks Day
Tomorrow is St Patricks Day! Growing up it was never a huge holiday around our house. My mom would make green eggs and ham, and if we felt like it, we would wear green. Having the last name Greene, though, we usually got away with telling people we always wore the color.  Since having kids, though, I’ve really gotten into celebrating even the smallest of holidays – my college roommate also absolutely adores St Pat’s day, so it grew on me.
Follow the rainbow to a delicious pot of gold Orange Sorbet
When I originally made these 4 years ago for my baby shower I used little green cups and didn’t take any photos. While recently going through old posts and trying to clean up the site for a better reader experience I came across it. Perfect timing! The kids were thrilled to come home from school yesterday to these little pots of gold. Scatter the snack tray with Chocolate Gold Coins, and the kids really had a blast!

    Ingredients
    1. 1 cup water
    2. 1/2 cup sugar
    3. 2 cups fresh orange juice
    Instructions
    1. Mix the water and sugar in a pot on the stove. Simmer for 15 minutes to make a sugar water. Remove from heat and let it cool.
    2. Add the orange juice, and mix well.
    3. Chill for about 1 hour in the fridge.
    4. Now, if you have an ice cream maker you can use that per the instructions for your machine.
    5. If you don’t have an ice cream maker, just pop your mixture in the freezer. Every 30 minutes or so, give it a good stir. After about 2-3 hours it should be a pretty good frozen state for serving.

      Football Food at Weekend Bites
I feel the need to apologize for the shortness of last week’s party. I had caught some bug that had me unable to concentrate on anything for longer than a few seconds. I’m feeling so much better this week, thankfully. Not much has been posted through the week, but I’ve got some fun posts in the works. Instead, we had a week spending more time with each other, getting back into the swing of school without the in-laws here, and tidying up the house

Who is ready for some FOOTBALL! I hear the big game is in 2 weeks. To be honest, I’ve not really kept up with any of the teams this year, but will randomly root for my Patriots on Facebook when I see someone posting about them. My favorite part of football is the food and company. I think these recipes from last week will be a hit at any game day gathering.

June is going to be all about camping around here. We’re planning a camping trip with Mark’s brother for end of the month, beginning of July, and I am just so stoked! Growing up with 50 acres of woods, we camped a lot in our backyard just to get out of the house, and have something to do as a family. It always brought us closer together.
This week’s features, while not specifically for camping, would make some great camp food! Enjoy!

There was something in the air this morning. I drove the kids to school, though we normally walk, and as I drove away I thought how much I missed being a kid. Riding the bus to school, playing on the playground and then sitting at a desk soaking up information surrounded by friends.
Perhaps it was the cloudy skies, the 40 degree weather, and bare trees – but it reminded me of “home”. New Hampshire. So then as I’m going through your links from last week I can’t help but be drawn to these recipes that remind me once again of my childhood.

    from Sweet Caroline’s Corner
This right here – I don’t recall EVER having broccoli without cheese sauce. Normally our broccoli was steamed and we’d pour that delicious gold over the top. YUM!

    also from Sweet Caroline’s Corner
I think Sweet Caroline was channeling my childhood this week or something. But really now, this looks so much better then our steamed Brussel Sprouts. I think I may have been the only 8 year old who liked, and I mean really liked Brussel Sprouts! I should make them more often.

    Rainbow Veggies Pizzas
    from Belle of the Kitchen
My childhood was full of fun and healthy eating in the kitchen. This is something I could see my mom having come up with to let us make.

Thanks so much gals for taking me down a food memory today!

This morning, we actually sat down as a whole family to eat breakfast. Normally we all slowly make our way out, and I let the kids grab a bowl of cereal. Mark fends for himself, and I might eat, if I remember amidst all the other morning tasks I try to get done before the kids go to school. Today though, it’s fall break. YAY! So even though I woke up a little later than normal, and the kids slept in a little, I made everyone wait to eat. I whipped up some pancake batter, tossed on the bacon, and even fried an egg for Mark since I know he doesn’t care for pancakes. Then we sat together.
You know what? Families are happier when they eat meals together. It’s true! It gives you more time to really get to know your family in this busy world we live in. After this morning, I want to try really hard to have more family breakfasts (we already eat dinner together every night). I need quick, or premade ideas though, for when school starts again. So I was happy to see a couple muffin recipes at last weeks party. I’ll be adding these into our menu for the next month.

    Kellogg's. Not just for breakfast anymore #goodnightsnack #shop #cbias
We all do it. Don’t tell me you don’t.
Dinner is over. You’ve cleaned up the kids, and made them clean up their rooms. Everyone is about ready for bed, when the nighttime munchies hit. You’re ready for a Good. Night. Snack.  But what are you going to have? The kids will probably want some, so you can’t pull out your chocolate stash just yet – don’t worry we’ll get to it. Now is the time to grab your Kellogg’s cereal. It is our go-to night time snack. Let me show you 3 reasons why.
    Kellogg's make the perfect #goodnightsnack #shop #cbias

    #1
Great for late summer nights! Summer is when the days are a bit longer, we allow our kids a tad more freedom and flexibility with bedtimes, and spend a lot of time outdoors. I’m sure you all enjoyed a fun 4th of July, but man those fireworks are late at night. How did you keep your kids happy while waiting? We enjoyed some sparklers, and Froot Loops. It’s a great cereal the kids can eat with their fingers, no milk needed, and it gives them a bit more energy to run off before dropping sometime before midnight.
In Utah we’ve got Pioneer Day coming up with more Fireworks, but for the rest of you, this would also be great when you’re out camping, and you get back to the campsite late from a day of adventure. The kids don’t want to wait for a fire to cook a meal, and you may not want to either, so pour a bowl of Kellogg’s and then do some stargazing!
Mommy Snack! Add your favorite chocolate to your favorite Kellogg's for the perfect #goodnightsnack #shop #cbias
    #2
This one is for the Moms and Dads. The kids are in bed, after a long protest because it’s still light out. You’ve given in the whole week, but you finally need everyone to get a decent nights sleep. So you’re not budging. Now that they are peacefully nodding, you can indulge with that chocolate stash and Kellogg’s.
Mark loves, I mean seriously loves to pour himself a huge bowl of cereal and milk after we’ve put the kiddos to bed. I prefer my late night snacking dry, but with a little extra. I can’t remember a time I didn’t love Tony the Tiger and his “They’re GR-R-REAT!” slogan. Frosted Flakes truly are great alone, but I added some Chocolate Pomegranates from Brookside to give me that extra yum factor. Really though, what’s better than combining a childhood favorite with a grown-up indulgence? Not much.
Kellogg's and berries are a mess free #goodnightsnack for Movie Night! #shop #cbias

    #3
Finally, we’ve got movie night. Every Friday around here, you’ll find us chilling with a movie and usually some pizza, or popcorn. Every once in awhile though, I want something a little less messy – that pizza sauce can really leave a stain on the carpet if you don’t catch it!  Corn Pops are almost like popcorn…just you know, switch the words around… but you don’t have to pull out the air popper, worry about kids choking on seeds, and then cleaning it all up. Add a little fruit for an extra POP of color, turn on your movie, and enjoy another great snack.
We watched Planes this last Friday and even gave our cereal spoons some mini wings to help fly straight. Simplest project ever! All we did was use one of the cereal boxes to trace some wings, and cut two slits just big enough for the spoon to slide in.
Turn your cereal boxes into Plane Wings for your spoons #goodnightsnack #shop #cbias
Guess what, the new Planes movie – Planes: Fire and Rescue is coming out soon! For a limited time, you can find specially marked boxes of Kellogg’s at Walmart with $20 worth of coupon savings. All you have to do is enter the code from inside your box on KFR.com/FireandRescue
Find specialty marked boxes of Kellogg's at Walmart #goodnightsnack #shop #cbias
I’m pretty much in love with Kellogg’s, not just because they make great cereals that my family loves, but because they also reward you with coupons like these. Last year, I used a code and redeemed a Mike Wazowski pillow cover. We’ve also gotten a few Scholastic Books through the Kellogg’s reward codes. Currently I’ve got a little over 10,000 points – WooHoo! Cereal is probably the one thing you can always count on finding in this home.
What are your favorite Good Night Snacks?
