Kids and Chores: It doesn’t have to be a battle
I’ve touched on the topic before, but as the kids get older, and we keep moving around, we never seem to find a system for doing chores that really sticks with the kids. I believe a lot of it is keeping a routine, which has been lacking with our most recent move.I came across this info-graphic from Terry’s Fabrics, and thought it was worth sharing. I hope I can be a bit better getting back into routine, and making chores FUN for the kids – or at least worthwhile. (2 hours wasted trying to get them to clean up the mess they made yesterday, blah!). -

Stinky Clothes Solution #Giveaway
*I have received product for review as a Purex Insider. These are my honest opinions. No financial compensation has been given.*Let’s be honest here, we all have stinky clothes. Some are just your everyday wear smell, but others can get real stinky. Especially if you have kids.Recently our biggest stinky problem has been Princess R’s clothes. For the most part she is potty trained, but some days she doesn’t quite make it, or she slightly misses the toilet and gets the back of her pants, or she just plain doesn’t want to go in the potty and would rather change and hide her clothes than go. It’s the life of a 3 year old after all.To help combat the stench that started taking over the Princess’ room I decided to try some Purex fabric softener dryer sheets. They smell coming from the box is quite strong, and I was sure it would overpower the other smell. I started by adding one Dryer sheet to Princess R’s clothes drawers, since that is where she likes to hide her dirty clothes the most. I mean Come on Now, child! Those other clothes are clean!!My next step will be adding them to the kids laundry baskets as well. I do laundry almost daily, but sometimes it’s closer to 2-3 days before I get through all the kids clothes, and by that point the clothes on bottom are really starting to stink. The fabric softener sheets will really help solve this problem. If you’re planning any last minute summer vacations, I would also take a box of dryer sheets. Just toss it in your suitcase and on your way home, when your pulling dirty clothes with you, a nicer smell will greet your nose back at home. Hold the applause, you can thank me later. But seriously now, I don’t do laundry on vacation, and neither should you. Just take some dryer sheets. In the past I’ve never really liked to use Dryer sheets in our laundry. I like my clothes smelling fresh all on their own, not scented unnaturally. But then I had another stinky problem – I buy unscented detergent, and the last brand we purchased I’m not a fan of. Our clothes leave the wash still smelling odd, as if they didn’t really get clean. I could have just changed back to my preferred Tide Free and Clear, but I can’t waste detergent.I was really worried the Purex dryer sheets would leave too much of a scent on our clothes though, and cause some skin irritation. So far, after a few weeks of use, we are still doing great. The clothes come out with just a light hint of Lavender, and all our sensitive skins have been just fine. Hooray!Another plus, is that it has reduced static cling to zilch, a feature I know Mark truly appreciates with all his button up shirts. It’s made folding the clothes a lot easier as well.GiveawayPurex has provided me with 3 coupons for a FREE box of Purex Fabric Softener Dryer Sheets. All you have to do is enter on the Rafflecopter below.Giveaway is open to US residents only. Potty Training with White Cloud Luxuriously Soft
This post brought to you by White Cloud. All opinions are 100% mine.
A funny thing happened recently. We’ve been trying and trying to potty train Princess R, but somewhat unsuccessfully. She would have a great day and I’d think “Yes we got this!”, only to follow it up with a day I wanted to buy more pull ups.
Then, last week we started trying out White Cloud Luxuriously Soft Bath Tissue. I kid you not, suddenly Princess R is going to the potty, only having accidents because it takes time to get that underwear down and up onto the potty. She stopped fighting us, and became suddenly aware of her body.
Now, can I really credit this success to White Cloud? I don’t know. Maybe. I would say it’s partly due to their Luxurious Soft Bath Tissue though. Let me tell you why in my first ever Video Review! Now, incase you don’t want to watch me talk about Toilet Paper, here’s a little recap for you –
+ Princess R’s skin was drying out pretty bad when we put her in cotton undies and tossed the pull-ups. When we switched to White Cloud, her skin softened up again. I believe the comfort from this Luxuriously Soft Bath Tissue helped aid in potty training Princess R.
+ I too have very sensitive skin and as a kid would break out with the wrong type of toilet paper. It makes me a bit of a snob when buying Toilet Paper. I want quality, that’s inexpensive and leaves me rash free. White Cloud has done that for me.
+ This 2 ply Bath Tissue is strong, and stays together from the beginning of the roll to the end. No more TP strays hanging around the bathroom.
There you have it! Our family is making the switch to White Cloud Luxuriously Soft. Why not find out if it’s the right choice for you. Get a $1.00 off coupon starting June 10th.
White Cloud makes premium paper products without the premium price! The new luxuriously soft bath tissue is made with an innovative manufacturing technology called TAD or Through Air Dried. Using a special machine, air is blown through 1-ply sheets of toilet paper to create a 2-ply sheet. This explains how well the Bath Tissue holds up, while retaining it’s softness. White Cloud is sold exclusively at Walmart. Find White Cloud products near youCONNECT -

Cut the Clutter and Enjoy more Family Time {Think About It}
There has been so much going on in our lives right now. Between just being a Mom, and trying to really put more into this blog, as well as remodeling the bathroom, and other life stresses, I found myself getting completely overwhelmed.I found my stress came out towards the house. I was tired of picking the same thing up over and over and over again. I was tired of feeling like the only one who cared to have a clean house. So I stopped cleaning beyond the absolute necessary chores. So then one day, I was talking to my mom, and she told me something she’s often said beforeLess is More.Yes Mom, I know, but so many things have an emotional attachment to them. I often have a harder time getting rid of items then the kids because I remember what we were doing when we got them. And as before when she’s given me this simple advice, I pushed it aside, thinking I couldn’t do it. I’d be the mean mom taking their toys away, the mean wife tossing things away and saying no to more “stuff”.And then a day or two after I talked to my mom I came across this post –Why I Took My Kids Toys Away from Living Well, Spending Less. This time, my moms advice came back to my mind, and I knew I needed to make the change. We needed to get rid of a lot of the “stuff” cluttering up our house. Not just for my sanity, but to bring our family back to true happiness. We’ve spent too many days crying over toys, not finding that special toy in the mess, and tears and tantrums because “It’s too hard to clean up Mom!”
Before I made my plan of action, I presented the idea to Mark. We believe in team parenting, so I wanted to make sure he was on board, and felt good about what I was about to do as well. We gave it a day to think about, and then presented our plan of action to the kids.Hey Kids, Mom and Dad were thinking, we have too many toys.Noooooooooo! Don’t take our toys away!!!We’re not taking your toys away! Calm down and listen please. And then we did it. We involved our kids in the process to make room in our life for more family activities, instead of more toys. The Idea: Earn money by selling toys at a yard sale. Use the money for a pre-chosen family activity. The Plan of Attack: We told the kids they didn’t have to sell any of their toys, but if they did we could earn money for something we can’t normally afford to do. Mom and Dad wouldn’t make them sell anything, but we would encourage them to minimize and choose only a few favorites to keep.We began with the stuffed animals. 2 large bins of stuffed animals stuck in storage, with more hanging around the toy room was a bit much. We involved the kids, and had a stuffed animal sorting party. Mark and I pushed to get each Princesses pile down to 5 stuffed toys. We ended with 1 full bin to sell (and a very happy Mama!). Now every night as we clean up the toys as a family, some may get tossed into our yard sale pile as the Princesses realize they don’t ever play with it.The Goal: Bowling! Frequently we hear requests to take the kids bowling. Bowling can get expensive, and exhaustive with all the kids – but we know they enjoy it, and it will bring us closer as a family. It will be affordable as well. For me though, I will enjoy more time with the kids playing, instead of cleaning up their crazy messes as they try to find that 1 toy hidden in the depths of the toy box.Think About It!
Are you being overrun with clutter? It might not be an insane amount of toys (my kids really don’t have that many), but if it’s enough that tantrums are a daily occurrence, and you feel overwhelmed just looking at them – then you probably have too many for your space and your kids. The tantrums truly tell us something. It’s kind of like a hidden message. To me “Mom it’s too hard to clean up” really was saying “Mom, I have too many toys, and I’ve just as overwhelmed by them as you are” -

Just Do It!
It’s so easy to let little things slide. To push small tasks to the bottom of an ever growing list. Time to stop it. Get those little things done, and soon the big things will fall into place too. It’s time to just do it.Something seemed to click inside me over the weekend. I’m not sure what it was entirely, but I have this sudden urge to be a better home maker. I mean, it’s something I was working on already, but I have this better desire, and I can see more of what needs to be done without feeling overwheled.Anyone else get that overwhelmed feeling when they start to think of everything they need to do? Sort of like there aren’t enough hours in the day, so why even bother? I don’t feel like that anymore. We went to hang out with our 16 year old niece this weekend. Her parents were gone for the weekend, and didn’t want her home alone. It was a nice break from my regular routine. Now normally when we go on mini vacations like this, the car doesn’t get unpacked for days to come, and the suitcases sit around with dirty clothes while I get back into routine.Ask for help
Not this time! I made the consious decision, and then the effort to clean out the van, AND put it all away when we got home. I asked Mark for his help, before we even pulled into the drive way. Since he was mentally prepared to help as well, the kids were mostly good at also helping. It really made a nice night for all of us. We got our vacation cleaned up, and then got to relax watching Bolt with popcorn and hot chocolate. And the best part for me…Prince L then slept through the night (a rare occurrence indeed). Getting enough sleep led to an early morning of pondering my scriptures, and begining my menu plan for the week, as well as time well spent playing pirates and dancing crazy before the Princesses woke up.JUST DO IT!
You’ll find it doesn’t take as much time, you’ll have more time for the fun things, and you’ll feel better about yourself.

She’s Real Fine … My 409
Well I saved my pennies and I saved my dimes, For I knew there would be a time, When I would buy a brand new 409. – Beach Boys
Not what you were expecting, now was it? You didn’t really think I got one of these did you?
Wouldn’t that be nice? (This was not an intentional Beach Boys quote…though you may start singing now).
No, my new best friend is 409 All-purpose cleaner. I don’t understand why people will move out of a home, and leave a bunch of stuff behind, including dirt. If we ever purchase another home, I think I’ll need to request that it be cleaned before we move in. I mean I don’t mind general cleaning, but when I can’t put my dishes in the cupboard until I take yours out? That’s going a little too far. It appeared many of the cupboards may have been closed for sometime too, based on he layer of dirt inside them.
I usually like to rely on good old vinegar and baking soda, or my green cleaners that I have. But since I didn’t know what the dirt was, how long it had been there, or any other scenario you can think of, I decided it was time for the big guns. I went and bought a bottle of good old reliable (Guys and Dolls...) 409.
The inside of my “new” kitchen cupboards reminded me of those really old yellowed photographs. With every wipe, my towel turned a similar yellow. Now I’m guessing it’s because of the yellow wallpaper they used to line the inside of the cupboards (and hoping too), but still, that’s just gross!
When you move, do you clean your old house? What’s your favorite deep down gunk cleaner? And for your entertainment, I leave you with The Beach Boys singing 409 -
Trapping Fruit Flies An Accidental Discovery
Fruit Flies – noun small annoying bugs, that infiltrate your kitchen when fresh fruit abounds.
source About a month ago we had a pretty severe fruit fly problem. It was most likely because I was in the throes of canning. Peaches, peach honey, tomatoes, applesauce and most recently apple pie filling. I came across a tip for trapping fruit flies on facebook. Just in time, I thought! So I put it to work.Vinegarjarsaran wrapYou are supposed to pour some vinegar into the jar, and then cover it with plastic wrap. Poke a small hole in the saran wrap and then place near the fruit flies. The flies will find their way in, but not out…supposedly. And eventually die in the vinegar.I tried it. It worked, but it also seemed to bring even more fruit flies. It wasn’t until I dumped the concotion of vinegar and dead flies, that the swarm calmed down. This brings us to yesterday. Thanks to a mouse problem, I had to dump all our cereal. I hadn’t made it grocery shopping yet (still haven’t), so we opened a jar of peaches for breakfast. Between the 3 girls and myself, we can polish off one jar. Normally I will either drink the peach juice left in the jar, or dump it down the sink. I don’t know why, but yesterday, I left the jar of sugary peach juice sitting on the counter. When I later saw it, guess what I found?yep! The fruit flies were obviously atracted to the peach juice/syrup. I went ahead and left it out the rest of the day and overnight.
The result? No live fruit flies in my kitchen this morning.
And that is how you accidentally discover something SIMPLE. -

Are you a Hoarder or Collector? {Guest Post}
Are You Hoarding or Collecting?

source There is a difference between collecting and hoarding. Collectors focus on a particular category of objects they enjoy. Someone that loves baseball may collect bats, cards and posters featured in that sport. The items collected are kept clean while being displayed nicely in the home. Collectors choose objects carefully before purchasing them.
Occasionally, a collector will store or sell excessive items. They do not allow the home to become overwhelmed with their collections. A collector’s home remains reasonably clean and functional. A hoarder brings random items into their homes. The objects may be broken, dirty and worthless. Hoarded items are not displayed nicely. They are left in piles and stacks. Objects in a hoarding home are often covered with dust and cobwebs. Hoarders may have no idea what is in the piles throughout their homes. What is Collecting?
Many people have a hobby of collecting objects. A collection is typically a specific category of items. Popular collections are dolls, pottery, coins and other objects. A collector displays their items in an organized and attractive way. Collections are placed on shelves and kept clean. A collected item may be framed and hung on a wall. Small collectibles are often placed in special books for protection. Valuable objects may be stored in boxes to avoid damage. Collectors may rotate their objects to avoid too much clutter. Collector’s homes are maintained nicely. The home is considered clean and safe. It is possible to walk around the home without danger of injury. Kitchen appliances are accessible. Plumbing in the bathrooms is functional.
What is Hoarding?
This is considered an obsessive compulsive disorder. Individuals keep a massive amount of objects. Clutter fills the person’s home until it is difficult to walk from room to room. In addition, the home may become extremely dirty. A normal lifestyle is neglected. Hoarders may have so many items in their homes that it is dangerous. Danger can be from potential fire hazards. Piles of objects may cover kitchen appliances. Bathrooms become filled with items and are unusable. Water leaks may be unnoticeable under the stacks of junk. Occasionally, rodents and insects begin to proliferate in the home. The heavy weight of objects can cause structural damage to a house. As objects decompose the home develops a horrible odor. Stacks of objects may fall on homeowners causing injury. In intense hoarding situations the home may be filled with human and pet feces.

Stop Moldy Toilets
*Stop moldy toilets contains affiliate links. When you click through and purchase I receive a small compensation at no extra cost to you.*Suffering with moldy toilets? Suffer no longer, because I just found the best product to use, and I’m sharing my knowledge with you.About a week after moving into our rental, I noticed mold was starting to grow inside the toilet bowl. I grabbed the scrub brush and tried to clean it out. For the next couple days, I found myself scrubbing that toilet bowl. It was so gross! It didn’t matter how often I scrubbed it, the mold was growing faster than I could keep up with.YUCK!One morning, I woke up and told Mark I was going to get that toilet cleaned by the end of the day no matter what it took. Turns out, he had the same thought (yes I have an awesome husband).Related – Spring Clean the BathroomMark’s solution was a bit more educational than mine. He deduced that there must be something like calcium deposits in our toilet. So he grabbed Lime-A-Way and poured it into the toilet tank. That way, every time we flushed, we’d get a coating of Lime-A-Way in the bowl.Ok I thought, that might work, however, I still needed to scrub the new layer of mold off. I took my trusty Comet, and scrub brush, and headed to the bathroom. The Lime-A-Way had already been at work! One coating of Comet and the mold came right off.
I kept my eye on the toilet the next couple days, waiting for the mold to come back, but it never did!!Thank you Lime-A-Way!!
Two weeks later, a small patch of mold was returning, so I added a couple more squirts of Lime-A-Way to the tank, scrubbed the inside of the bowl, and our toilet was clean again.Stop Moldy Toilets
If you are having a mold problem as bad as mine, I suggest calling a plumber as well as using the Lime-A-Way and Comet. There is very possibly something else going on to cause such a large mold build up. Since we were renting, we chose to stick with cleaning it ourselves until the landlord chose to hire a professional.

Living Space vs the Toys …. Think About It
Do you ever look around your house, and wonder how you can keep it all clean? You’ve got kids running around everywhere, and find yourself constantly tripping over toys.
Over the weekend, we were at my sister in laws house. She has a set of toys in the main living space dubbed “Upstairs Toys”, but the bulk of the toys is in the basement and are dubbed “downstairs toys”. Her home always looks so immaculate and inviting. We got to talking about how she keeps the toys separated, and it really helps with the cleaning.
Now in my head I’ve always decided that the toys belong downstairs in our house. It’s where the kids bedrooms and the playroom are. Really the toys don’t need to be anywhere else in the house. Yet they always seem to get scattered up and down, and even outside. I’d really like to have a sit down with the kids and tell them that the toys aren’t allowed upstairs anymore.
However, at the same time, I like that my kids feel comfortable playing in any room. I like that they come play near me while I’m working (even if they do get in my way sometimes). I love watching their imaginations take off as different household items get incorporated into their toy play. Would I be squalling their creativity if I kept all the toys downstairs? Would I spend less time with my kids if I didn’t let them bring their toys upstairs while I’m cooking?
I guess I’m just having a hard time finding a good balance. I think I need to separate our toys, like my sister in law does. Some can be upstairs, and some can be downstairs, but we don’t mix the two. All I really want is a front room that when people walk into don’t feel bombarded by toys (or other stuff for that matter). I want just one clean room. Is it too much to ask? One room that looks like it could be in a Better Homes and Garden?
Think About itDo you have a room in your home, free of toys? How do you separate the living space, from the playing space? I’d love to hear your thoughts!
