DIY Quick Window Defroster and Other Winter Car Tips

With winter upon us, and many places covered in snow already, I felt today would be a good time to share a tip on how to keep ice off your car windows, without freezing your hands off. Check out this DIY window defroster I found on Pinterest! This post contains affiliate links and I will receive compensation if you click through and make a purchase.  Defrost your windows in seconds with this homemade spray and other winter car care tips. I find myself often scraping the car windows, gloveless, because I was in a rush, forgot the gloves, couldn’t find the gloves or wasn’t expecting a frosty car.  My poor fingers on those days really don’t like me, and I don’t blame them. While browsing Pinterest, I came across a photo with a tip below it for de-icing car windows in a rush. Keep reading for more tips on dealing with icy windows.

    DIY Window Defroster

    • 3 parts Vinegar
    • 1 part Water
    • Mix together. Spray on the windshield before nightfall as a pretreatment, or after ice forms. Either way should work.
I was thrilled and immediately told Mark about it. I always worry about putting anything on the car. Mark takes care of our vehicles, and he knows what is good or bad for the car. I didn’t think vinegar would be bad, especially just on the windows, but had to make sure from the boss. He says it’s ok to use.
So next I went to the source of the picture – Coffee Break with Liz and Kate.   I’m so glad I did too because they answered my next question, how/why does this work?  In their words:

“Vinegar contains acetic acid, which raises the melting point of water – preventing water from freezing.”

    Alternative Window Defrosters

I’ve been reading up on this tip lately, before winter hits again, and have found many of you tried it over on Pinterest. Some found it worked, others were not impressed. Overall it seems the vinegar can leave your car smelling, well, vinegary. Some found the spray would just refreeze on the windshield. Here are some alternatives to try.

Replace the vinegar with Isopropyl Alcohol. Mix with water in same proportions.

Replace the water with Dish Soap. Mix with vinegar in same proportions.

Replace the vinegar with Isopropyl Alcohol and the water with Dish Soap. Keep the 3:1 ratio.

I would also suggest after spraying the mixture turn on the car wipers before anything has a chance to refreeze to the windshield.

    Other Winter Car Tips

Use this spray on the door handles and key lock to open frozen doors.

Keep hand warmers in the glove compartment.

Check your oil and air filter before the cold hits.

Keep an ice scraper in the car, however, if it breaks or you’ve left it somewhere, credit cards work wonders on the windshield!

Store a shovel in the trunk for digging out of a snowbank (hopefully you never need it)

Did this Window Defroster solution work for you?

Connect to Nature with Black Dinah Chocolatiers

This conversation is sponsored by Black Dinah Chocolatiers. All opinions are my own.

There is a beauty in nature that brings out my inner child. We all need a place and time to escape the stresses of our world. I find that solace in nature and chocolate.

Growing up in New England, I was blessed with some of the most beautiful sights during the fall. It wasn’t just fall, though, with it’s changing colors. No, I was fortunate to live in the middle of 50 acres of forest that afforded me the luxury of finding peace away from my troubles whenever I needed it.

Our house sat atop a hill overlooking a lake. At least, it would have overlooked the lake if the trees weren’t in the way. I’d say I spent 90% of my early childhood outdoors. We built trails, cleared campsites, and played some amazing games of capture the flag with the creek our borders, right outside our front door.

The moments that truly stick out to me, are the ones I spent alone in those woods. Days my older brothers were annoying. When my BFF and I would fight. When I just needed to get away from the house. I would take off into the woods. I found so much solace in the midst of ferns, birches, and pine. I can still smell the vibrant flavors of the forest.

When we moved to Indiana, one of the first places I discovered was this pretty little walking park. In the middle of the city, it had all the makings of my childhood home – forest, creek, dirt trails. I love taking my kids to this trail to go walk around, skip rocks across the creek, and play on the bridge. I want them to find peace in nature as I did. Life can get overwhelming at times, but we can always head out to nature and leave the world of people behind – if just for an afternoon.

This last weekend we took some chocolate from Black Dinah Chocolatiers on our foray to the forest. I really couldn’t think of a better combination to escape the harsh world than a trip to nature with a box of some of the finest chocolates I’ve ever tasted

Black Dinah Chocolatiers are handmade with fresh cream and butter from local farms. They buy or trade for the herbs and flowers with locals at farmers markets in Maine. They state “We know you can taste the difference”, and it’s true.

Infused with locally sourced Lavender, Black Dinah Chocolates transport your taste buds. ad

The Lavender is absolutely amazing. As we all took a bite into our delicious chocolate, I could taste the local ingredients and feel almost transported home. The kids were in love too. I doubt they’ve ever tasted chocolate as fine as Black Dinah.

The kids are almost home, and suddenly you realize you haven’t pulled out a snack! Never forget snack again with this DIY Snack Bowl.

With a designated snack bowl, you'll never forget snack time again. ad #PlantYourVote I often find myself scouring the kitchen and pantry for something – anything – to feed my hungry kids when they get home from school. Because I watch neighbor kids after school these days, it’s been extra important to have something on hand and ready.

As I was walking through the store one day this week, thinking about snack time, I thought it might be helpful to have one bowl completely dedicated to snacks. I can leave it on the table, reminding me all day long that it needs to be filled.

    The Colors

I took inspiration for our snack bowl from Goldfish Colors.  With their fun colors, it reminded me of the garden we grew this year. I was pleasantly surprised to learn that the colorful crackers are naturally dyed from plants! The green color – a favorite in this household – is made using watermelon, Huito, and turmeric. I had to look up Huito.

LEARN WHERE GOLDFISH COLORS COME FROM

Since I’m not the best artist in the home I turned the coloring over to Mark. I told him my idea, how I wanted the bowl to represent the fun colors of a garden, and then let him work his creative genius.

  • 20 Wheat Free Foods

    20 Wheat Free Foods

Do you or your child suffer from a wheat allergy? The following list of foods are wheat free, and pretty delicious too.

20 Wheat Free Foods to try when you can no longer eat wheat due to a food allergy.

Just because you have allergies doesn’t mean you can’t enjoy food still. When we first found out Lincoln had food allergies I felt so lost! We’re still in the figuring it out stage, but I’m feeling a bit less overwhelmed now that we have it on the calendar to see an Allergist.

One of the top allergies we believe Lincoln is suffering from is Wheat. I wouldn’t say it’s a life threatening allergy as of yet, but he has lived his whole life with the sniffles. When we started taking wheat out, they have come less often. His complaints of “hair in my mouth”- a common way for kids to describe an allergy attack – have also been non-existant since removing wheat.

This was the one allergy that had me scratching my head on how to remove. It seemed every box and package I picked up contained wheat. Things I would never have guessed had wheat in them, had it listed in the allergy information.

I’ve found the best way to elimate wheat is to make everything from scratch. You know the ingredients going in and there are a fair amount of flour substitutes out there. The following is a list of wheat free recipes you can make and enjoy whether you have a food allergy or not.

    Wheat Free Snacks

Frozen Grapes are one of our favorite snacks, especially during the hotter months of the year.
Butternut Squash Sugar Cookies on FaveHealthyRecipes look amazing and perfect for fall snacking.
Gluten Free Cornbread is pretty easy and has simple ingredients as you transition to a wheat free diet.
Homemaid Trail Mix that is wheat free, dairy free, and nut free comes from The Thrifty Couple!
Orange Sorbet only has 3 ingredients and is super easy to make. You can mix it up with different flavors too.
Peanut Free No Bake Cookies are not only wheat free but peanut free too!

    Wheat Free Breakfast

Egg Rolls are a nice filling way to start the morning.
Cinnamon and Sugar Sweet Potatoes make a great side dish or sweet breakfast.
Hash Brown Breakfast Nachos  from The Choas and the Clutter look like a fun breakfast that could easily be made to fit your own tastes.
Coconut and Cornmeal Pancakes from Maple and Marigold sound interesting, but definitely worth a try if you’re looking for a classic breakfast.
Gluten Free Breakfast Casserole from Tastes of Lizzy T is another awesome looking recipe I can’t wait to try!
Gluten Free Breakfast Pizza from Girl and the Kitchen is probably more adult friendly, but I might get Lincoln to try it.
Pumpkin Breakfast Cookies from from Art from My Table is every kids dream. Who doesn’t love cookies for breakfast?

    Wheat Free Dinners

Chicken and Broccoli Curry is delicious and a nice well balanced dinner.
Nachos for dinner! Pile high with beans, lettuce, tomatoes and onions and you have a dinner instead of just a snack.
Creamy Potato Cauliflower Soup will warm you up on a cold night.
White Chicken Lasagna from Tastes of Lizzy T that is gluten free sounds fabulous.

    Wheat Free Breads

Paleo Pita Tortilla-Naan Bread from Forest and Fauna uses a few more odd ingredients, but if you’re craving some bread this looks pretty good.
Cauliflower “bread” sticks are on my must-try list. Bread is the biggest thing we’re missing right now.
Gluten Free Banana Bites from Juggling Act Mama are another fantastic treat that allows us to have a wheat free treat.

Do you have food allergies? Let me know what wheat free recipes are your favorites.

They have really gotten into things like Cross Country, SpellBowl, Choir, and music ensembles. I strongly believe in sitting down at the table with the family every single night, but I need help to make it happen.

With all the running around we sometimes do, I get to dinner and I just do not want to cook. I was so excited to hear about Dinner Hero from Revolution Foods. In under 30 minutes, I can have a healthy and delicious meal the whole family loves. So far we’ve only tried the Fiesta Taco, but it was a hit!

That is what I love about these meals. Besides being a fast fix for our busy nights, they have flavors I might not otherwise introduce my kids to, and they can be customized with extra additions.

The box says it serves 4, but I fed 5 of us and we still had some leftover rice/quinoa blend that I could put in a burrito for my lunch the next day. Mark wasn’t home for dinner when we had this, otherwise, it most likely would have been the perfect amount for our family.

That’s no fun, though. I love having my kids friends over. I love having MY friends over. So something had to change. I had to either enjoy the cleaning, or find ways to make it easier.

  • How to Hang Art like the Pros

How to Hang Art like the Pros

You’ve moved into a new home and you are ready to hang all those beautiful family photos or that special piece of artwork you purchased. No need to dread putting holes in your walls anymore as you learn how to hang art like the pros. I received a product in exchange for this post. All opinions are my own. This post contains affiliate links and I will be compensated when you purchase from them.

How to hang art like the pros

    Pick Your Art

Before you can hang your art you’ll need something to hang. When each of our kids is born, Mark and I put together a puzzle that we then glue together and hang in their room. This is a fun piece that always sparks conversation with friends. Another great option is to commission a piece from your favorite Instagram photo. The Beare Canvas did this beautiful piece of my girls after I snapped the photo with my phone.

A post shared by Adelina Priddis (@adelinapriddis) on

    The Display

Nobody likes bare walls, although too many hangings can also become overwhelming. To figure out the best display for your wall, start with a blank piece of paper. Draw out a few designs with the pieces of art you’d like to hang. Play with different sizes and amounts of art. Once you have a general idea on paper, start laying your pieces out on the floor. I’m a very visual person, so if you lay out a white sheet first, and then the art on top it will give you an even better idea of how it will look on the wall.

    Hanging the Art

Now that you’ve chosen your art and created a display, it’s time to get hanging! This is the part I always dread, especially as a renter, because of all the holes. Larger photos may need 2 nails to keep them up, while the smaller pieces only require one, there are usually more of them in a gallery meaning more holes. To get around this, I suggest using the STAS picture hanging system. It’s a new system to hang art while minimizing the holes in the wall and allowing you to change up your design every now and then with ease.

Hang art professionaly with STAS picture hanging systems. ad

So how does STAS work? The STAS picture hanging system is a rail that you mount on your wall. It blends well if you mount it at the top of the wall, or adds a beautiful Art Galley feel if you bring it down a bit. To the rail you attach different cords depending on the look you’re going for. We wanted more discreet, so our Superman puzzle has been hung on the white perlon cord, blending seamlessly into the wall. To the cord, you attach your desired hooks. These vary based on what it is you want to hang and how heavy the artwork is.

Do you know what else I love about the STAS? I no longer have to worry if I’ve got my art up straight, especially those bigger pieces that require more than one nail. With STAS the picture will always be straight. Now you can hang art just like the pros!

  • DIY Chore Jars for Kids

    DIY Chore Jars for Kids

I received product to review in conjunction with my Chore Jars. All opinions are my own.

UGH! Chores! and Kids! Getting the two to mesh can be quite the pain. Since implementing these Chore Jars, however, the fighting has become less, and the house just a bit cleaner.

Take 5 minutes to put together these DIY Chore Jars for your kids today.

I actually borrowed this idea for chore jars from my sister in law. I’ve been horrible at setting a routine and sticking with it. The kids knew they could get away without helping clean until I blew a gasket. Then we’d have one day of deep crazy cleaning with a crazy mom, but we’d head right back to no one but me cleaning up after that.

The chore jars keep that ugly routine at bay for the most part. One jar is filled with chores that need to be done. The other jar is where chores that are done get placed. Once all the chores have been placed in the Jobs Done jar, I replace them in the Jobs To Do jar. I’ll list out the chores for you that I use, but every home is different, and you may have different chores for your kids.

    • Clean up Coat Closet
    • Wash Door Knobs
    • Sweep Porch
    • Dust
    • Wash Dishes
    • Clean off Table
    • Wash Walls
    • Clean up Craft Area
    • Gather garbage
    • Wipe Down Baseboards
    • Clean Out Car
    • Fold Laundry
    • Empty Dishwasher
    • Clean Bathroom
    • Sort Laundry
    • Pickup Front Room
    • Sweep Kitchen
    • Take out Recycling
    • Wash Windows
    • Sweep Hall and Entry
    • Wipe Down Cupboards

DIY Chore Jars for your kids to eliminate the fighting and have a clean home.

With my kid’s ages ranging from 10 years old to 4 years old, I was initially worried about having chores that the 4-year-old could do, but also wouldn’t be too easy for the older girls. My sister in law, of course, solved that issue as well. She used colored popsicle sticks to indicate easier chores. Since Lincoln’s favorite color is green, I indicated the chores he can do without assistance by coloring the ends with a green marker. The girls know not to pick those unless all the other chores are done.

To make your own Chore Jars here’s what you’ll need –

Make DIY Chore Jars to help kids learn responsibility

Start by cleaning your jars. This was a great way for me to test out the glass and polishing cloth from e-cloth. These rags need no cleaner, just water to work, and the glass cleaner doesn’t even need water! With 3.1 million fibers per SQ inch, chemicals aren’t needed. These make the perfect cleaning cloths for kids, so you can avoid them spraying chemicals all around the house.

Once your jars are clean, affix the cute labels I made for you with hot glue. Set aside, and start labeling your popsicle sticks. Add one chore per stick, and place in your Jobs To Do jar. Remember to mark chores that are easier for the younger crowd.

    DIY Chore Jars for kids

I grabbed one more quart mason jar to put the e-cloths in. With everything together in one spot, the kids have no excuse to not get their chores done. Of course, now you may be asking how I get the chores to actually get done. This is what has been working for us.

When the kids get home from school, they must first work on homework while enjoying an afterschool snack (come on, I’m not a mean mom!). After their homework and snacks are finished they must pick one chore from the jar. When they finish their chore, the rest of the evening is theirs. Periodically I incentivize the chores with an extra snack or activity. With Valentines this month I’ve included another mason jar full of chocolates next to the jars. When their chore is complete they are allowed one chocolate.

When Saturday rolls around, whatever chores are left in the Jobs To Do jar must all get done. We work together in the morning, and then the goal is to have a fun family activity in the afternoon. Somedays we don’t get that fun activity, but on a good day, and especially a good week, we try to reward the family for their hard work. My oldest has taken to asking if she can do an extra chore on weekdays to earn money. Usually, it’s for something like ice cream at lunch, or a new book from the school bookstore – each costing less than a dollar. I allow her to do this, but once again remind her she’s not allowed to pull the green sticks to earn money.

What chores would you add to my list?

  • Start the New Year with a Clean Air Filter

Start the New Year with a Clean Air Filter

I received an air filter in exchange for this post. All opinions are my own.

It’s the New Year, but many of us are still suffering from colds, allergies, and other upper respiratory problems. If you’ve been stuck inside during the winter break with your kids, you probably know what I’m talking about.

Change your air filters with Filter Snap! ad

I myself came down with a cough just before Thanksgiving, and it wasn’t until just before the New Year that it finally subsided. Now it only acts up as I go between the freezing temps outside and the warm indoors. My lungs are still adjusting to that transition this winter. Mark also had ‘the cough’ but seems to have gotten over it just after I did. It got so bad, though, and many we knew seemed to have it, that we started calling it the Indiana Croupe.

Now is the time to check your air filters! I recently found Filter Snap, and love the idea of it. Instead of me trying to remember when we changed the air filter last, I’ll only have to think about it when my new filter arrives on the doorstep. I get to choose how frequently I want to change my filter, and then it’s a set and go type of thing. My air stays clean, and there is one less thing I have to think about.

When my first filter arrived, I had Mark show me how to change it. This has to be the easiest thing to change ever. I mean I thought changing the car air filter was a breeze, our home filter has it beat. I originally thought I’d be giving you a DIY on how to change your air filter today, but it’s just too easy.

    • Locate your furnace.
    • Open it up.
    • Remove old filter.
    • Replace with the new filter.
    • Close the furnace.

Say what?! If you still need help, send me a pic of your furnace and I’ll walk you through it from there. I promise you can’t mess this up, even if you are the kind who usually calls others to help you. I’ve been in your shoes, I just happened to marry a very handy husband who teaches me cool things like this.

Guess what, I’m going to leave you with one more piece of home cleaning advice today. Whenever you change your filter, take a walk around the house and look at all your air vents too. This is a great time to give them a good dusting. I personally prefer to use my vacuum with the brush attachment. This makes sure that all the dust collecting on them is sucked out of the vent instead of dropping into your air system.

How often do you change your air filter?

The recommended length is every 3 months. However, if you have more than one pet or severe allergies it is suggested to change it closer to every 1-2 months. On the flip side, if you own a vacation home, your filter only needs to be changed every year. That’s what makes Filter Snap another awesome company because you set how often you receive your new filter. They have options from every 1, 2, 3, 6, and 12 months!
